Young anglers enjoy the bounty of Galway's salmon run

Salmon fishing has been very good over the last 2 weeks in Galway, with Seamus Hartigan reporting 71 fish from the 8th to the 15th, and 140 fish over the last 6 days to the 26th.
Water levels increased slightly around the 9th, after a numbers of days of heavy rainfall, with water spilling over the closed gates, making the fish a little more unsettled in the river. That coupled with an increase in temperatures, both air and water resulted in reduced catches. Nevertheless some decent fishing was had by some during the period.
Dublin anglers Michael Rogers and Paddy Murray accounted for a pair of fish during their visit, as did father and son John Carroll Senior and Junior from Tipperary, with John Jnr catching his first salmon, a trip to Galway he will always treasure and remember. Another young angler who caught his first salmon was David Donoghue from Athenry, fishing with his father Phil, who acted as mentor and netted his sons fish, making his day one to remember.

Another Athenry resident Declan Tuffy grassed a treble on the fly, engaging several more during his session. Martin Kiely from Limerick also got into to action taking three fish during his trip to the Weir, as did Kevin McCrossan from Donegal who had good sport on the fly. Sebastian McMichael kept the flag flying from north of the Border with two nice fish on the fly in trying conditions, with thundery weather dictating matters for the number of days.
The following week saw more settled water levels, and fish responded accordingly, with 140 fish caught. Dave O’Reilly landed 3 grilse on fly, as did German visitor Werner Meckle on his regular visit. Regular angler brought in his son Michael and grandsons Blair and Conor, home from Dubai on a visit, and all 3 managed their first salmon!

Local angler Adrian Murphy caught 3 grilse to 6lbs on shrimp and fly, and Clare man John Murphy also had 3 grilse to 6.5lbs on fly. Waterford anglers Paul Whelan and Eamonn Power had a fun-filled visit, both landing 5 grilse each on the fly, and possibly enjoying a few pints of “Barrys Tea” as well.
Regular visitor from Belfast Dexter Lynas fihed with son Andrew, and although Andrew had 2 grilse to 5lbs, Dad can still pick out the better fish, Dexter landing a fine grilse of 7lbs, all on the fly.
Clare man Eddie Corry also had a good fish 8lbs on the fly, while Limerick man Martin Kiely had 3 fish to 6.5lbs on fly and shrimp. Laois man John Hetherington also had 3 grilse to 7lbs on fly and shrimp, while Swiss visitors Thomas Ulbrecht and Werner Wahrenberg enjoyed their visit, both taking 2 grilse each on shrimp.
Fishery officer James Quinn had an unusual catch today, landing what he thought was a small grilse to be surprised by what looks very like a Pacific salmon, possibly a pink salmon and certainly a fish that appears to be lost. Scale and DNA samples have been taken to confirm the identification, but if confirmed, this would be a most unusual catch and begs the question of how the fish came to arrive in Galway!

The fishery is still seeing excellent numbers of fresh fish, and water levels remain good for angling, indicating great prospects for the week ahead.

Wicklow Boat Charters Skipper, “Kit Dunne”, reports on excellent catches off Wicklow in terms of quantity, quality and variety. In terms of Quality a record number of Specimen Smooth-Hound have been recorded recently, the biggest clocking in at 18.25lb for Mick Mc Carthy, while many anglers and the skipper have had the elusive 3 specimens in the one day. One memorable day saw 16 specimen smoothies to the boat.

In relation to Quantity there has been a steady stream of Smooth-Hound, Ray and Tope lately. 15 Tope were caught and released when skipper Anthony took Anthony Hawkswood’s group for a day out, while John Morgan and the Kingfishers Beile Feirste Club had a similar day. While a lot are pack tope, many have weighed in at high 30s while the one that got away was a 45-50lb fish bursting thru the net.

To add to the variety this year Wicklow Boat Charters has clocked up a few consistent catches of Black Bream, on a few recent trips numbers of Bream were landed, with the biggest falling to Brendan Adams who hit the jackpot with a fine 2.3lb Specimen Fish.

I had a few super trout on Mount Dalton Mid week with David Quirke who was home on holidays from Washington D.C.

David loves his river fishing, but decided to check out a bit of lake fishing while back home on this trip. Luck would have it we boated 9-10 trout on the fly, and David had a cracker weighing 3lbs 1oz.

I hooked –up with Seamus Kiernan last Sunday, and we had a bit of sport catching cracking pike in blistering sunshine on Ennell. The Seamus lad is setting sail for America soon, and had a few pals down for the weekend.  On board were Sean Donnelly and Andrew Corrigan, and the lads never really fished, but certainly had beginners luck and boated pike up on 10lbs in weight.

Mick Flanagan tells us he was out on Owel basking in the sunshine and working hard for trout…

Quite a few boats were out on Owel last Saturday as temperature hit the high mark. Monasterevin anglers fished the Timmy Meredith Memorial Cup, and they had some lovely perch, and a few trout in bright calm conditions. The club members are coming to Owel the last 9 years fishing this event, and really enjoy their trip yearly. I had a good chat with Chairman Trevor Bannon, and we will be keeping in touch on the angling scene.

In the group were six pike anglers, and one coarse angler Johan. Kevin said things were a little slower compared to previous year due to the bright sunny and hot conditions. The fish caught were mainly around the 70cm / 80cm along with a couple of 90cm fish. The biggest fish of the week went to Tony measuring 106cm but the Pike master award they fish for went to Barry. Great fun and company guys, hope to see you in Ireland again soon.

All fish returned unharmed.

Irish Angling Update – 22 June 2016

Out on Cork Harbour as the sun sets…

Half the country was scalded in the last week as each day was proclaimed the hottest day of the year. Some Irish anglers were amongst that number but hopefully suncream, sombreros and sense were applied by most. Needless to say the hottest and brightest days (weren’t they all?) were not the best for anglers, but you’d be amazed by some of the catches that came in all the same…

The Munster Blackwater did well following recent rains and some great days were had by a number of anglers as fish to 18.5lb were landed. The River Lee also had a good week and over 50 salmon and grilse were reported from club waters and the Inniscarra fishery. Heading west we come to the Bandon which recorded 40 salmon last week. Other west Cork rivers were not as prolific. The Laune was quiet again and not many salmon were reported. Currane could have done well but the days that weren’t eye squintingly bright were more than a little windy. On the Goldilocks days anglers did well enough though. The Feale had been fishing well, but unfortunately levels are low again now. The Grilse run in the west is continuing to boost catches and Costello and Fermoyle and the Erriff reported successes for a number of anglers. The Burrishoole Fishery opened with a couple of salmon caught but it was the Moy that hit all the high notes again. Over 500 salmon were reported and fish are being caught all through the system. Given the conditions of the last week its a good number. The Drowes had been holding its own, but levels there are low now and catches have fallen.

trout
Ted Wherry with a stunning 7lbs trout – Catch of the Week Winner

Sheelin hummed and buzzed with hatches of fly but the shifting winds put paid to consistent fishing. So it was that luck and skill were needed to make the most of the fishing on offer. Angling regulations on the lake and other water across the Shannon catchment have been updated and anglers are advised to make themselves familiar with the new regulations. Lough Owel was the venue for the Monasterevin Angler’s Timmy Meredith Memorial Cup on Saturday. It was tough going in the sunshine and calm, but a few trout were landed. Anglers on Mount Dalton had better fishing earlier in the week landing 10 trout to over 3lbs.  Trout anglers were scarce enough on Corrib and though the fishing was not easy some very good fish were taken. Ted Wherry of Mayfly Lodge and guest Andrew Wain caught and released trout of 7lb and 6.5lb in the bright sunshine. The fly was not named. Once again Catch of the Week goes to Lough Corrib – Ted Wherry is the worthy winner for his 7lb fish. Catch Photo Release.

Canal angling in Ireland offers some great fishing and the Royal Enfield two-day Festival showed just how good the fishing can be as the anglers returned some cracking catches of skimmers and bream. Paul Hughes had a fantastic second day and won the event on 38lb 10 ozs. Despite the high temperatures there were good catches of coarse fish from Shannonbridge down to Lough Derg.

Lough Derg was also the scene of some more incredible piking exploits as visiting anglers were guided to some of the best fishing on offer in Ireland. There were strong winds to contend with, as well the hot weather but the lake’s guides really proved their worth providing no shortage of excitement and big fish. The biggest reported was 114cm caught by Cedric Charpentier. A group of Dutch anglers staying at Melview Lodge had lots of pike between 70-80cm but the bigger fish were hard got due to the bright weather. That said they did get a couple of 90’s and biggest measured was 106cm. On Ennell first time anglers fishing with mick Flanagan had great sport landing pike to 10lb in blistering sunshine.

Brendan and Bream
Specimen Black Bream

Sea anglers probably had some of the best fishing despite the winds and particularly on the brightest days. Wicklow Boat Charters had up to 15 specimen smoothhounds in a day, tope to specimen size and specimen black bream. In bass fishing news Cork Harbour provided good angling for German anglers fishing with Richie Ryan. Bass and pollack were caught on a mix of fly and lure. The Awesome Angling team had ling to 30 lbs, conger to 25lb and coal fish to 14.5lb with Mark Gannon out of Courtmcsherry. Charter boats Lady Gwen II and Clare Dragoon are reporting good fishing in the Shannon Estuary and off the Clare coast. A little further up the coast in Galway Bay specimen spurdogs and more provided the excitement for anglers fishing with Blue Shark Angling Galway. Once again it is Donegal Bay that provides the shore angling highlights. Everything that swims in the sea from conger eels to 27lb to tiny 3 spined sticklebacks seem to be on the feed up there.

Don’t forget about the Fish & Film competition. Junior fishing clubs, youth clubs, projects and centres from across Ireland are invited to apply to the competition by taking film footage of their fishing adventures and promoting it online. The top three groups with the most views on their film will go forward to a junior fishing competition where the overall winner will receive a €1,000 fishing tackle voucher for their club with the two runners up each winning a €250 voucher. To enter visit: http://www.fisheriesireland.ie/fishandfilm

Bright breezy weather, a little cooler than what we have been getting, is forecast for the weekend. There will be a few showers on Saturday developing into widespread rain on Sunday. Next week is to be a little cooler again. And wetter. Sure aren’t the days drawing in already. Well, that’s our summer over. Give up the beach and go fishing…

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Water quality under threat from pollution, says watchdog

Water quality in one in three rivers and lakes is at risk of deteriorating due to pressures from agriculture, urban wastewater and other pollution sources. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that despite EU rules requiring improvements in quality over time, there has been “too much deterioration” over recent years. Director of the Office of Evidence and Assessment Dr Matt Crowe told the National Water Event in Galway that while Ireland’s environment was “generally good”, there were “underlying issues of concern”…

Cathaoirleach calls for more action to save Lough Carra, Mayo News

THE outgoing Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council has called for greater action to be taken to conserve the ecosystem of Lough Carra which is the main water supply for 2,000 people. The 4,000 acre lake located near Ballintubber is one of the county’s premier fishing lakes but the deterioration of the ecosystem on the lake in recent years has led the EPA to classify the water status from good to one of review…
