Porbeagle come good for Wicklow group fishing in Galway Bay

John Fleming of Blue Shark Angling Galway had a group from Wicklow Bay SAC fishing with him over the weekend. The target species was porbeagle shark, but a sloppy day on Friday meant that they were difficult to target, so the lads had to settle for a single blue shark along with a range of regular species.

But it all came good on Saturday, as the weather settled, allowing them to fish a more productive mark a bit further offshore. And there will have been plenty of sore arms come evening time as they manage 9 porgies between them, ranging from 100lb all the way up to 250lb.

Super 76.5cm bass for young first-time angler Seán

What a fish for your first fish ever!
What a fish to get on your first ever session!

Hooked from the Start: Seán’s First Day Sea Fishing

A recent ESB club outing to the scenic beaches of Wexford turned out to be more than just a relaxing day by the sea — it became the setting for a young angler’s unforgettable introduction to the world of fishing.

One of the members had brought along his 13-year-old son, Seán, in the hopes of sparking a bit of interest in the sport. Excited to get started, they arrived on the sand only to realise they’d forgotten one fairly crucial item: their fishing rods. Fortunately, a couple of spare rods stashed away in the back of another member’s car meant their day wasn’t over before it began.

With gear sorted and lines in the water, John Higgins spent the day guiding Seán and his dad through baiting hooks, setting up rigs, and getting a feel for beach casting. Seán took to it quickly and showed plenty of enthusiasm — but none of us expected what happened next.

Before long, Seán hooked into his first fish — a lively 1lb sea bass that put up a decent fight. The smile on his face said it all. We’d just finished taking a quick measurement when, out of nowhere, the second rod went flying off the tripod and skidded across the sand. Without hesitation, Seán grabbed it and leaned into what was clearly a much stronger fish.

After a long energetic battle, he landed a second bass — this one a real beauty, measuring just over 76.5cm. It was a proud moment not just for Seán and his dad, but for everyone there to witness it. In one day, he went from curious onlooker to enthusiastic angler, landing two bass, one Flounder and a cracking fishing story to boot.

Days like this remind us why we love the sport — not just for the fish, but for the memories made along the way. Something tells us this won’t be Seán’s last time casting a line.

Massive conger makes holiday memory for young Latvian angler

Wow!

We got a great email from Markuss Urban, a teenager over on holidays from Latvia, and we were astounded at the size of the conger eel he landed! Check out his report and photos below:

Just wanted to share something unforgettable from my summer in Ireland! I’m Markuss, 16 years old, visiting from Latvia for the holidays. On Monday, July 21st, I went fishing off the pier in West Cork—and reeled in the biggest fish of my life!
It was a massive conger eel, longer than me (I’m 175cm) and estimated at over 40lbs. The thrill of the sea air, the tug on the line, and the disbelief when I finally pulled it up made the whole experience feel like a movie scene. It’s a moment I’ll carry with me forever.
Wow!
Half of mackerel and 10/0 hook did the trick.

Fish was unhooked and released shortly after.

What a catch, and what a memory of his trip to Ireland. Well done young man, and we’re sure we’ll see you back on these shores again!

Lots of water, lots of fishing for the PiscariFly crew

Peter Driver of Piscari Fly is back with his weekly roundup of the fishing scene

How’s The Fishing?

River Nore

A week of ups and downs really. It started well with a little fresh water coming into the Nore system, then way too much by the end of the week. With the rivers rising and a little bit of colour, some good early reports in the week of good fishing being had. Towards the back end of the week Peter was on the river with a few friends from the Netherlands and had a fantastic time on it. The water was up and slightly coloured but we were catching some really good trout and a nice little sea trout even came along to say hello. The fishing was really good, with lots of action on nymphs and dry droppers.

Keith Kearney from Kildare had some good action on the Nore also during the week on his Piscari-Fly Venator

Ardaire Springs

I managed to get out in Ardaire Springs for a few hours with the kids during the week, and had a great bit of sport down there with the kids on the lake, catching some trout. It was a lovely couple of hours down there with Ned. I’d definitely recommend it, if you’re looking for something to do this summer, with the kids. Bring the kids down for a morning as there’s a great bit of fun to be had and catch a few fish in safe and pleasant surroundings.

Avonmore

There’s a good few lads out on the Avonmore at the moment practicing for the TAFI National Championship which will be happening in 3 or 4 weeks time. Peter and Mark got up there for a couple of casts over the weekend, on Sunday morning before the rivers came in flood. They had a good couple of sessions down river in the morning time catching some trout, on nymphs mostly, as the water was up and a bit coloured. Mark even had a nice seatrout, which is lovely to see in the river. Then, in the afternoon when the boys moved up river to test some of the beats up there, unfortunately, the river had risen significantly, it had gotten very dirty and coloured so it was pretty much unfishable. The day had to be cut short but still it was an enjoyble morning up on the Avonmore. It is always a beautiful river to fish, one of the most beautiful rivers in the country in fact. It’s well worth a trip. You can get you permits online at https://www.onthewater.ie/anglers so check it out. Looking forward to another National Championship on my home river.

Trout Fishing in the Midland rivers with Johannes Bulfin

The fishing in the Midlands has been wonderful recently. The very hot weather had us on hold for a few days but as the clouds rolled in and the rain fell, the fishing was exceptional.

I managed to fish the rising flood and also a couple of days later as it thinned down. The fishing was so good I had a client wrap up a day early saying “You know what, this has been exceptional, let’s call it a day, it’s not going to get any better than this!”. Having just netted 3 fantastic Croneen (lake run brown trout) for him within the space of half an hour, I had to agree.

Smaller pulses of rain have had the rivers fluctuating a little bit, but even in seemingly tough conditions, the fish have been feeding hard.

I had a memorable evening for myself too out with my son. We landed 2 Croneen, the biggest a whisker shy of 20 inches. It put up an incredible fight and had us stumbling downstream after it, until I scooped it into the net with a whoop of triumph and relief. Memories for life.

World Youth Fly Fishing Championship

The World Youth Fly Fishing Championship concluded at the end of last week. Ireland had a fantastic performance overall coming 4th but at some stages throughout the competition we were in the hunt for the medals. Great to see the Irish team competing at this level and getting some great life experience at the world Fly Fishing Championship in Idaho. Well done to all the lads, we hope you all got home safe and are looking forward to the National Youth Championships that are coming up in a few weeks up in Northern Ireland.

This is the link if you want to see all the results for the championships https://www.fips-mouche.com/youth-results/?_champ_id=9076 .

The Copper Coast

Peter and Mark got out for a bit of a cast on the copper coast early last week. For something different. The conditions weren’t too bad so the boys went down for a look and a cast. Mark picked up two bass and Peter picked up one. Nothing massive but it was a bit of sport all the same. The conditions definitely played a part, I think, with the change in weather from humid hot to the cooler weather that is there now has probably turned some fish off. We caught some bait fry but not too many big Bass up around where we were anyway. All the fish were caught on Gurglers. It was nice to get out, have a cast and walk along the coastline, just a lovely way to spend the evening.
