Where have all the salmon gone as New Year wait continues? Belfast Telegraph

Where have all the salmon gone as New Year wait continues?

It is now two weeks into the 2017 salmon season and no fish have been reported caught and only the odd fresh fish has been seen. It has so far been a disappointing start to the new season despite Shane Gallagher of the Drowes Fishery reporting that there have been good numbers of rods out in good weather and water conditions…

Dearey's concern at Lough future

Green Party councillor Mark Dearey has expressed concern that the British would try to claim Carlingford Lough in a post-Brexit world. In an interview for an article by Victoria White in the Irish Examiner about the possible environmental impact of Brexit and whether a united Ireland could help, Cllr. Dearey said he was fearful that the British would lay claim to Carlingford Lough and what would happen to the water supply of Dundalk, which comes from the Fane river that rises in Monaghan, flows to Armagh and ends up in County Louth…

Outrage over Slaney salmon ban

The river Slaney is to close for salmon fishing in 2017 to the outrage of local fishermen who believe the move will lead to an increase in salmon mortality rates due to poaching. The enforcement order came into operation on New Year’s Day under the government’s fisheries management policy. Sean Kyne T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment, said the policy is being implemented to replenish and conserve fish stocks in the river…

Mixed emotions for Currane anglers as salmon season opens

Opening day on Lough Currane
Opening day on Lough Currane

Vincent Appleby reports from Waterville in the Kingdom of Kerry where the salmon season opened on Lough Currane…

Opening day on Lough Currane
Opening day on Lough Currane

17/1/17 Its great to be back in the No Spin No Fly’s just Facts zone and tight lines to all you anglers this 2017 season. Lough Currane had a calm of sadness this opening day and for good reason. It’s with great sadness that I have to inform you with the passing of Mrs Kathleen O’Shea RIP, Wife of Gillie Mr. Donal O’Shea and Mother of Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea, Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea, Daughters Ann and Kathleen, Daughter-in-law Patsy, Son-in-law’s Eamon and Michael and all the Grandchildren. So on behalf of all the Anglers and all Donal’s, Neil’s and Tom’s clients, and all the good people of Kerry we send our sincere sympathies to all the O’Shea Family and friends. Staying with the Lough Currane calm of sadness in the past few weeks UK angler Mr. Jonathan Fish RIP, Dublin Angler Mr PJ Lynham RIP, have sadly past away and again our sincere sympathies to both their families and friends. So on that sad start to the season we head out on to Lough Currane for today’s action or I should say the lack of it and for good reason, my Noble Anglers failed Miserably in their duties in both the fly and trolling departments, but to be fair to the fly anglers there was little to no wind as you can see by this photo. Just for the record there were a good few Kelts caught on the troll which is a good sign. Wind SSE light to calm with good cloud cover, air temperature 8c but felt like 7c.  Just for the record there were about 9 boats out manipulating.

18/1/17 There were a few boats manipulating but no reports of any real action except for the odd Kelt being caught and talking of Kelts, if you catch one I would appreciate it if you would report to me and remember to put your Kelts catches down in your log book. Wind SSE light and overcast, air temperature 10c felt like 8c

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Kinsale Charters report some interesting catches

Hake and Haddock double from earlier this week
Hake and Haddock double from earlier this week

Recent trips are bearing fruit forMick Dennehy on the Silver Dawn and they’ve had some interesting fish already this season. Hake have featured in the catches already this year. Another interesting observation is the number of mackerel – Mick says he has never seen so many mackerel in mid january! Other anglers are reporting catching them from shore marks in West Cork. Strange times…

Acrobatic sea trout get heart rate up for Donegal shore anglers

Stefan Martin from Killybegs Mariners SAC reports on the fishing around Donegal Bay…

The sea trout are most definitely on sand eels
The sea trout are most definitely on sand eels

A light mizzle glided over the mountains on the far side of the beach and slid down the side and across the beach all day sprinkling a light mist on the white sands of remote Donegal and some lovely fish the seatrout put on acrobatic shows jumping clear of the water sideways and doing full overhead turns as they tried to unhook themselves as they came shallower on the way in through the surf, a quick few photos and they were away back again to carry on with life.

The Dublin Pike Anglers report some excellent fishing was had on Sunday during the third leg of their Winter League. An excellent 17lb fish was had by Steve Farrelly. This fine looking fish was not enough to win him the day and Dave Murphy ened up taking the honours. Another catch of interest was a lovely looking brown trout that snapped up a deadbait meant for another predator. This fish, along with all the other pike caught on the day, was carefully released.

Results for the day are:

  • 2nd. Steve Farelley
  • 3rd. Joey Bonnie

Fraher family double in Ardmore Master Shore Anglers

Liam & Mochara
Liam & Mochara Fraher won the Junior and Senior Master Anglers Shore Competition

Stan Ryan from ARDMORE SEA ANGLING CLUB reports on two great wins for the Frahers in the Senior and Junior  Master Shore Anglers…

Liam and son Mochara Fraher became the Senior and Junior  Master Anglers for Ardmore SAC. Both fished consistently in the 8 competitions throughout the year. Up to the last competition it was neck and neck between Liam and Brian Mansfield who is one of the top anglers in Ireland. Mochara showed his talent by landing more bass than most of the senior anglers…some achievement for such a young lad.

Liam & Mochara
Liam & Mochara Fraher won the Junior and Senior Master Anglers Shore Competition

In the boat competitions Stan Ryan beat Brendan O’ Dwyer by 1 point to become Master Boat Angler. Unfortunately, John Cronin was unable to fish this season. No doubt this might have changed the overall result. John of course is renowned for his skills both nationally and internationally and is always a force to be reckoned with.

The club has had a great year. As an example the last competition, on the 10th December had ten anglers fishing in Ardmore. Seven different species were landed : bass, whiting, coalfish, conger, rockling, cod and a magnificent seatrout. Every angler caught several fish. All bass were returned and the seatrout lived to fight another day.

Boat angling was at times spectacular.  In one competition 576 fish were landed by 10 anglers. Species included cod, whiting, coalfish, ling, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, pouting, poor cod, dogfish and more. This is exceptional fishing.

There is no doubt that the numbers and range of fish in this area would be hard to find elsewhere.

We look forward to tight lines and big fish 2017.
Thanks to all of our generous sponsors.
