A large discharge of raw slurry has been blamed for the death of at least 1,200 fish in River Blackwater in North Cork.
Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) received a call to its confidential hotline at 11am on Monday and were on scene at the Owentaraglin river, a tributary of the Munster Blackwater, within a matter of hours.
However, they found the dead fish spread over a 2km stretch of the water near the village of Kiskeam.
IFI said Owentaraglin is an important spawning river. The species affected by the pollution included salmon brown trout, eel, and stickleback….
Fisheries Ireland says a large discharge of raw slurry into the Owentaraglin River, a tributary of the Blackwater, is likely to have caused the fish kill.
INLAND FISHERIES IRELAND is investigating after over 1,200 dead fish were found on a spawning tributary to one of our main salmon fishing rivers.
The fish kill is on the Owentaraglin River, a tributary of the Munster Blackwater River, in north-west Cork.
Fisheries officers discovered more than 1,200 fish mortalities over a 2km stretch of the river near the village of Kiskeam….
Last crew of 2016 Rich, & Ade from the North of England patiently waited for their window to come after we had to rearrange due to poor weather a while back, it all came together lately with a decent spell of high pressure over Ireland combining with favorable tides, & winds.
A “Home Alone” Seal pup made for the safety of the water as we passed by on our hike to one of the intended spots, with water temp still good enough for surface lures Ade clipped on his beloved “Sammy”, & after a couple of misses he was into a few fish in the 60cm bracket. Rich had most of the luck the next day with his favored SP’s, the Savage gear Sandeel coming up trumps for him with fish in the 50, & 60cm bracket…. “It were worth waiting for” Ade reckoned, and he was right, it was…..

Bannow Bay Angling club was founded in 1995 by a group of anglers in the Bannow/Wellingtonbridge area to cater for all types of shore angling, fishing in the estuary and on beaches along with rock fishing in the Hook Head area to give its members a wide variety of fishing and to cater for all age groups.
The cold snap gave way to unseasonably warm weather and temperatures to 16C have been recorded in recent days. Unfortunately water temperatures don’t change as quickly so fish that were inactive because of the cold did not just switch on – but at least it was not as brassy for those anglers who made the effort to get out and wet a line…
We have coarse angling reports in from Leitrim, Clare and Meath this week, all competition results. Catches over the weekend were modest but enough to keep the anglers happy. Better bags came from commercial fisheries like Oaklands and Toomans where good nets are possible now that the ice has cleared from these venues.
Pike anglers had some decent fishing in the last week with a good number of fish into the teens reported, particularly from midlands venues. Loughs Ree, Boderg, Derravaragh, Cloonfree and Garadice all produced a few good pike from travelling and local anglers. Good perch were also reported on deadbait at Boderg. Catch of the week goes to Killinarden Angling Initiative junior angler Ethan for his 23lb pike for the Oaks Fishery in Derry. A worthy winner and a new PB.
Ethan’s 23lb 10oz pike wins him Catch of the Week
At Waterfoot, Willie Weir from Larne caught 20 fish to win the annual open fished there. Flounders made up the bulk of the catch but a good number of school bass also put in an appearance. Janet Snoddy won the women’s event and and Harry McKee Junior and Senior won the team event. In other sea angling news cod are in Cork Harbour and the general area in good numbers. Fish of 3-5lb are being taken, boat anglers are getting the better fishing. Staying with cod in Cork the Henry’s Tackle Irish Cod Championships were fished at Youghal over the weekend. There were 66 anglers on the beach taking part. The fishing was slow in general the best action was had at Red Barn. Tim Sexton won the title of Cod Champion for his 48 cm Cod.
Tomorrow and Saturday will continue to be mild and mostly dry though there will be some mist and murk in places. Sunday will get colder particularly overnight, but again it will be mostly dry. There will be some rain working its way across the country on Monday but most areas will be largely dry. The further outlook to the early days of next week is for a spell of unsettled weather with showers or longer spells of rain giving way to drier conditions mid week. After this evening’s winds have blown out conditions should suit boat angling at a number of venues both inland and coastal.
I met with Ballymote Coarse angler as they fished one of their winter leagues near Dromod in Co Leitrim. Ballymote anglers are based in Co. Sligo, but travel across Leitrim, Roscommon, and Sligo fishing their winter & summer coarse angling matches.
More fish from the Ballymote coarse anglers
I chatted to Alan Spencer who was competition captain on the day, and Alan really loves his fishing. The retired school teacher, originally from Liverpool, moved over to Ireland nine years back, having crossed the waters since the early seventies and fishing here in Ireland yearly. Last weekend’s match was won by Dave Rowkins of Strokestown with 6lbs 13oz, 2nd was Alan Spenser 5lbs 13oz, and 3rd Ballyhaunis angler John Randall.

Last Sunday Midland Pike Anglers club members hosted a boat competition on Lough Boderg. This is a popular permit free venue for pike angling clubs, and is on the Shannon system with access at Dromod in Co. Leitrim. It is not a million miles away, and you will easily get their from Mullingar within an hour pulling the boat. When you get there, there is splendid access for launching boats, and parking space in Dromod Harbour.

Conditions on the day were quite good with a slight breeze, but it was bitter cold for the first few hours of the competition. Fishing was from 11am-4.30pm, and some nice pike were caught, with heaviest pike down the line taking the top three places.
Joe McDermot
Joe McDermott from Longford had the best pike weighing 14lbs 15oz, 2nd was Newtowncashel piker Ollie Fallon with 13lbs 11oz, and Moyvore angler Mick Dalton 3rd with 7lbs 12oz.

Last week the Leinster branch of the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association held their Annual General Meeting in the Greville Arms Hotel. Here in Westmeath many of our local clubs are affiliated to the I.T.F.F.A and delegated from our local lakes were present for this meeting. The Leinster branch of I.T.F.F.A. are busy working behind the scenes organizing Provincial championships on our lakes and Rivers across Leinster. These dates will be announced in early 2017 and we will keep you posted on what’s coming up on our local lakes. These Provincial championships are an ideal opportunity to promote our angling and our excellent Accommodation providers across Westmeath. Prior to the championships many anglers spend a few days fishing practice session on the chosen venue, and they all have to sleep, eat, and drink when drifting through the Midlands.
Good perch are also possible on Boderg
Michael Diffley and pal Darragh Healy of Rooskey fished the Midland pike angler’s competition, and I watched them net a fish not long into the competition. Chatting to the lads later they told me that a 2lbs perch picked up one of their dead baits, so I reckon a days perch fishing on Boderg is on the cards.

It was chilly start for the 3rd round of the Munster Coarse Anglers Winter league at Clondorny Lake, Tulla, County Clare. The Anglers had fished Portumna twice and had seen a real change in fortunes as the temperatures had a massive effect on catches.
Steve had over 6lb of skimmers… but no one told him to wait for a photo after the weigh in
At the weekend in Tulla it was a little milder and though the catches were not anything like what they had in the first round at Portumna there were still a few decent skimmers landed and first place was taken with a net over 6lb.
