David from East Coast Fishing heads to Wexford for a perfect day’s fishing:
The very tough fishing conditions along the East Coast pushed us further South last Sunday. Just after one and a half hour drive from Arklow, we landed somewhere in the middle of amazing County Wexford. We found the water crystal clear and no swell at all with a very light wind over there- perfect for kayaking.
I tried something different this time. LRF fishing from the yak. Geared up with my perch rod, casting weight up to 10g, 1000 size reel loaded with mono 0.18mm I was ready to the action. The rest of our team fished with typical bass-pollock rods c.w up to 30g , 3000 size reels loaded with 20lbs braid. I used the 7grms jighead, then went heavier 10-15grms
The very first fish of the day went for Sylvia- a little nice pollock.
In my very first cast my lure got smashed by a bass. In the recent years I caught a dozen silvers warriors, but I dont remember a battle like with this little fella- coz I’ve never fished such a light gear for it. I hooked it on about 8 meters depth and it took me a several mins to land it into the boat.
After a very good begining, me and my GF were in a constant action with the pollocks. I didnt expect such a hard fight on the light gear from those fish. The sound of my screeming reel was echoing on the cliffs walls. I lost the only one fight-pollock for sure- fish was taking the line on the full speed, and I was afraid to tightening my drag as I didn’t want to brake the rod or line. The fish snagged into the kelps afterwards.

When the light started to fade, the bites becomes more rarely, but we still managed a few. There was a completely new experience for us to be on the water after dark. Awesome.
We finished late , about midnight with a few nice fish being caught after dark and a couple lost fights, probably with the elusive Wexford Silver Bars.
Such a great day on the Wexford Coast. We will be back!
