Billy and Charlie Demery have a strange encounter while fishing at Dun Laoghaire and tell us their tale:

Recently, fishing has been slow but productive with all sorts of fish from beautiful hybrids to small pollack, but recently in D un Laoghaire, the mackerel have made a strange re-appearance! so fishing off the ice house in the middle of the two piers has caught me and Charlie 6 mackerel over Friday, Saturday and Sunday but after all the mackerel, there was another strange catch………….

We were fishing with floats, trying the aul cannibalism trick, using mackerel strip as bait on a float, I was using one rod, while Charlie used two. He was untangling  one of his rods, when I saw his float was gone, I immediately ran to the rod that was still being used and struck, I had a mackerel on, but when I felt it running so fast I realised I had got one of the resident seals robbing a fish we had hooked! The seal was not hooked, but he wouldn’t let go! He ran about 150 yards before I brought him to the surface and he got the fish off my line. I lost the mackerel, but I was happy, this will be a day I remember!
