The hot weather continues into another week! Tom O’Shea was out with the water quality monitoring team yesterday and reports that the water temperature in Currane was 21 degrees with a water clarity of 4.2 metres. Needless to say fly fishing on all the lakes has come to a stand still! However those souls venturing out are reporting good catches of grilse on the troll. These are apparently very fresh fish, many with sealice, and are in numbers not seen for some years. A great pity we can’t get at them on the fly!
Enrico Fantasia 0f Italy caught 2 Sea Trout the best of which weighed in at 4lbs, while fishing with his gillie Neil O’Shea The Charles party from France, caught a Grilse on the fly, and their friends, fishing with local Gillie Terence Wharton, caught a fine Grilse on the troll. Staying on the north side, Mr. Peter Glover of the UK caught a fine Grilse and a Sea Trout on the fly, with Gillie Dominic McGillicuddy.
On the south side,Liam Ellis of Waterville, caught 4 Sea Trout ranging from 1 ½ lbs. up to 4 lbs all caught on the drift by 1 pm. Staying on the South side the catch of the day goes to Jim Cooke of the UK, who caught a cracker of a specimen Sea Trout on the fly, weighing in at 8 ½ lbs while fishing with Gillie Sylvester Donnelly. Staying on the south side, Ernie of Luxemburg, caught a fine Grilse on the troll with his Gillie Frank Donnelly and Ernie was telling me that he caught a few Juniors last night on the drift, on his Appleby fly, plus his friend Bob caught a Grilse on the drift, in their hired out boat from lakelands and last but not least a Guest fishing with his Gillie Brod O’Sullivan of Stella Maris guesthouse Waterville, caught a fine Grilse on the troll. Wind W light with reasonable cloud cover.
