Wicklow Boat Charter’s skipper Kit Dunne reports on an excellent weekend of Tope fishing, Smooth-Hounds and specimen fish over the June Bank Holiday. Also showing were a few Ray and Bullhuss and many Grey Gurnards. An exceptional weekend of weather brought exceptional fishing to the East Coast Town of Wicklow.
Having set out with an optimistic mind we were pleasantly welcomed by a few Smooth-Hounds within the first 15 minutes on Sunday morning, this was later followed by a Specimen weight Hound of 11.2lb caught by local angler Shane Nugent, then well known specimen hunter Tony Morris bagged a beautiful Hound of 11lb.
The day only got better with the first Tope showing at 11am followed by a further 19 throughout the day. We counted roughly between 40 and 50 Hounds, which was complimented by a massive near 20 Tope between 15lb and 30lb weight.
The following day wasn’t much different with a further 15 Tope landed, and a beautiful Specimen Smooth-Hound of 12.75lb for Ronnie Sutcliffe, winner of the Wicklow Boat Charters Cap. There were many Grey Gurnards and some Huss caught and a fine Ray lost. The Ray are still showing in quiet small numbers and were waiting for a big catch soon.
After 2 days of hard fishing the Tope were a little shy on Tuesday with many dropped baits and shy bites, but after perseverance from Peter’s crew 4 were landed with a fine Huss to top it off. Dabbling a bit with my crab baits between tagging fish, I managed to bag a Specimen Smooth-Hound of 9.1lb for my opening Specimen of 2013.
