The Trout Anglers Federation of Ireland (TAFI) is to host the FIPS Mouche 12th World Youth Fly Fishing Championship from July 21 – 26, with part of the event being held on the River Fane.
TAFI organises angling qualifiers every year across Ireland with the winners representing Ireland at the Four Nations still water Championships, European, Commonwealth and World Fly Fishing Championships. This year sees the Youth Championship coming to Ireland, jointly organised by the Leinster and Ulster councils and run on a cross border basis.
FIPS Mouche (International Sport Fly Fishing Federation) are the regularity body who run the World Championships with Ireland TAFI been one of the founding member countries.
Teams will consist of five anglers and one reserve (aged 14 to 18) and will be accompanied by their manager and captain. They will be fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout and official practice will be held on Monday 22nd of July followed by three days of competitive fishing.
The venues are spread over counties Louth, Monaghan, Meath, Tyrone and Antrim and include two rivers and three lakes with the Fane River running through counties Louth and Monaghan hosting one of the venues.
Michael Woods (Chairman) of the Dundalk & District Brown Trout Anglers said: “It’s a great honour for the club and our members to be given the chance to host this event on the River Fane. The club has been sending youths to the World Championships for the last 10 years and we are delighted that the Fane has been chosen as a venue. One of our youth club members Michael Conroy from Tullygee, Knockbridge qualified to fish with the Irish Team. Terry Kelly also a club member from Dundalk has been selected as Manager of the Irish Team. ”
The Chairman also added: “We are looking forward to greeting the teams from around the world where they will be fishing on our waters on the River Fane on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the competition week. We would like to thank all our local sponsors for their generosity and support as without their help events like these would never happen.
Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) and the Loughs Agency are the main sponsors, with IFI also supplying bio-security for the event.
