Frank Reilly reports that fishing pressure has been light on the lake of late, with relatively sparse fly hatches, consisting mainly of a few late mayfly and some sedges. The Mark Molloy Cup was held from Oughterard on Saturday last, with 23 rods weighing in 13 fish. First place went to Gerry Dixon, with 3 trout for 2.16kgs. Kevin O’Toole was second, with 2 trout for 1.59kgs, and third was Joe Healy with a trout of 1.25kgs.

The Garda West club held a competition on Wednesday 20th, with 10 rods weighing in just 4 trout. Top rod was Joe Boyle, with 2 trout for 4.5lbs, followed by Barry Carolan with 1 trout for 1.5lbs, and third place went to Shane Fraser with a trout of 1lb.

Frank himself was out for a couple of short sessions over the weekend, landing one fish on Saturday evening on a dry sedge, and taking 3 fish on Sunday to a mix of wet and dry patterns.

The lake is a very low level at the moment, with warm water temperatueres, but the unsettled weather and cooler air temps should see it liven up a bit over the next few weeks, and hopefully the traditional good September sport will be enjoyed by a few more anglers in the coming weeks.
