Tom Collins of seaanglingcharters.ie in Union Hall West Cork reports no shortage of bait fish.  On Friday he had a cracking day’s fishing with the first day of the season on the Skate.  5 to the boat and a couple lost due to technical difficulties.  Best fish of the day, and an Irish specimen, went to Gary Blake, coming in at 196lb.

Evan McGovern managed 2 skate on the day, one male and one female fish, both estimated around the 60lb mark which wins him the prize of most skate landed ! Evan tells us that skate was the target and the day turned out to be one of the best any of them ever had. – “We put out shark rigs as we waited for the skate to arrive and landed 3 blue shark to 60lb.  The skate came on the feed later in the afternoon and we had a busy, backbreaking few hours with 5 skate coming to the boat.  I had two small ones to about 60lbs, Gary Blake had 2, one of which was a 180lb irish specimen, and Izaak Bradley had one around the 100lb mark.”

On Saturday the Loch an Iasc Charterboat received news that 4 more of their tagged shark had been recaptured and logged with IFI.
One interesting fact that they got back was that 2 of their sharks were caught on the 12th of Sept last year and recaptured on the same day this year 500 Km off the Azores which would indicate that they stay in their original packs during their migration!
