Mike Duckett and Tony Vallack who live in Plymouth , are both keen anglers. Tony was reading the Inland Fisheries Ireland weekly reports over the last year and decided to get a ferry to Ireland with his mate Mike to try out the fishing in Cork Harbour. They were particularly interested in trying out Eire Bass Richie Ryan as a guide to see if he lived up to the reports on the diary. Having been out on a recent charter in the UK which only produced 3 pollock , they were determined to catch fish.
Staying in the beautiful Elmville B & B recommended by Richie , and owned by Olive O Brien ,they were only a few hundred yards from the Eire Bass ” departure lounge ” !
Over a number of days the guide managed to land them over 130 pollock on the fly and and a few whoppers broken off and even a few bass. In fact the first ever reported fly caught bass on Harbour Rock fell to Mike Duckett on the last cast of their trip. To say he was chuffed was on overstatement. The former Royal Navy Warrant Officer , staying in Olive’s former RN officers quarters , was grinning from ear to ear as was the guide !
