Al reports from the AWOL winter fly fishing league….

Today we fished Laois Angling Centre. 17 anglers fished for 98 fish. To say that Laois is fishing well would be an under statement, with plenty of anglers catching on the 1st peg, it had all the hall marks of being a great days fishing.

It was a cold crisp day, with snow flurries staring on the 1st peg and starting and stopping for the day.

David May had put up a spot prize, for the 1st angler to bag up after the 1st peg. Darius Simkus was the winner of this catching the peg limit of 4 fish on his second peg.

Looking around the lake it seemed that lures where doing very well, and the fish wanted them on a fast retrieve. As that day went on and started to slow some anglers found the bung to be productive.

As always happens a the lake in Laois gets a second wind in the afternoon with fish switching on to lures again, two anglers caught the peg limit on the 2nd last peg, so it was all to play for heading to the last peg.

When the fishing was over, we had one clear winner with a catch of 15 fish and with second and third being very close, only separated by 1.5 cm.

Results are as follows.

1st Darius Simkus 15 fish
2nd Marius Lincevicius 10 fish
3rd Shane O’Cathalain 10 fish
