Kevin O’Boyle reports from Lough Conn & Lough Cullin…
Angling on Loughs Conn and Cullin was challenging during the week. Mayfly hatches were considered poor but those who put in the effort had reasonable results.
A group of three anglers from Northern Ireland had 3 days dry fly fishing on North Conn from Cloonamoyne Fishery at Enniscoe. They concentrated on Ned’s Bay and Flannery’s Bay and averaged 8 trout each per day. All fish were of keepable size but were all released. The best fish weighed 2 lbs. and successful patterns included the Grey Wulff and Green Wulff. One angler had a sea trout for 1.5 lbs. on a size 10 Yellow Wulff! Ian Wise who runs the business had 6 trout over 3 hours on the Grey Wulff in Bog Bay, the best of which weighed 2.5 lbs. All fish were released. Sixty-four trout in total were reported from Cloghans Bay, Castlehill Bay, Brackwansha and Poteen Island for the week. Michael Noone, Lahardane had 2 salmon trolling in Castlehill Bay and Pullawokhouse Bay, the heaviest fish weighing 9.5 lbs.
On Lough Cullin a few boats ventured out during the week. Padraic Kelly and Kevin Gallagher from Castlebar had some good fun on Lough Cullin on Monday 17th May having 8 trout to the boat for a half day’s fishing. All fish were released. Michael & PJ Tiernan had some good fishing for a short time on Saturday 22nd until the cold chill drove them off. They had a few trout to the boat all of which were released. The best trout weighed 1.5 lbs. and most fish were caught on wet Mayfly patterns.
