Rebels SAC returned to Monatray for another session at the weekend. Everything was in threir favour, moon phase, tides, and even the bit of stir that most dread, but gets the REBELS fired up. Shane Olden reports..

Monatrae bay round 2

Right guy’s, another day down for the rebels in West Waterford saw the lads come back to right the wrong we had in the glorious weather a few weeks back.

On arrival the venue had plenty of storm blown weed on the shoreline with some interesting foreign objects in the mix. A frightening amount of plastics and buckets, and unfortunately 2 seal carcases. On the day we had 13 anglers fishing . Winds were S/SW and gusting to 32mph on and off which meant most if not all beaches would be unfishable.

Monatrae

As it was scheduled to fish the bay anyway today we didn’t mind one bit and held hope for some codling until a real nasty heavy sea faring fog blanketed the area. This is a change that’s never welcome at any time as it dampens fishing and most times shutting an area down to a blank. Not to be deterred, the rebels hunkered down and pushed on as there was points to be put on the board and some of the new guy’s showing good promise picking up high rankings. It is great to see lads learning the sport and coming on strong.

bass

First to find the fish and great to see him back out on the front line showing how it’s done was JIM COTTER with a coalie. He was followed by JACOB MURPHY with a bass. Next was JIM MELLIS JNR with a coalie. On again was JIM MELLIS SNR with a coalie as well. Keeping the pressure on, bringing a 38cm plaice and a new club record was JACOB MURPHY.

38cm flounder

NIALL FORREST was starting to pick up pace with a coalie followed by a pair of dog fish and putting in a great performance on only his 3rd comp ever attended and taking his place on the board again to keep the older more experienced REBELS under pressure.

NOAH TAHRAN was next to find fish ending up with a pair of dog fish to contribute to his over all placing on the master angler leader board . Unfortunately the phrase fail to prepare, prepare to fail came to mind as only 6 guy’s out of 13 were able to get fresh peeler crab on time for the day. Those without would have put forward a better show for the club and a better reflection of the venue if they had crab, so hopefully a lesson learned going forward for guys. None the less there was good heart and hunger shown for the sport and lads drove on regardless. Baits used on the day were crab, lug, black lug, rag worm, sandeel, mackerel and razor clam. 5 species entertained us in the form of bass, coalies, flounder, plaice and dogfish. Not to be snuffed at with the very heavy fog by any means, and I thought the lads did well to produce a variety of fish where normally a bad fog would spell out a blank.

Placings on the day were as follows

  • 1ST – JACOB MURPHY
  • 2ND – NIALL FORREST
  • 3RD – JIM COTTER
  • 4TH – NOAH TAHRAN
  • 5TH – JIM MELLIS JNR
  • 6TH – JIM MELLIS SNR
