Angling club Killybegs Mariners reports on their League Final which did double duty as their Closed competition on Sunday, 21 December…
An easy like Sunday morning kinda day in West Donegal with gentle easterly breezes and blue sky’s with a big ground sea making huge noise disturbing the peace for the Mariners closed competition and the final league outing rolled into one.
Chasing the last of the ebbing tide so some good early fish with flounder to 36cm for Shane and 33cm for Stefan along with good turbot to 29cm for Aaron and 27cm for Brian as bites eased over the turn.
Scores for the overall league title were down to the wire with Darren Rawdon topping the board just ahead of Chris Whyte and Gavin Dorrian and all having fish early on.
On the day the top fishing was had by Shane Cunningham with 3 good counting turbot and 2 big flounders for 173pts winning the outing pot of €90 and Mariners closed winning prize a Penn Slammer reel. Well done Shane.

2nd place on the day and agonisingly close to the overall league win winning €45 and a Shakespeare seat box for 2nd in Mariners closed on the day with 144pts was Chris Whyte (another league prize to come)
And longest flattie outside the top 2 places on the day was won by Stefan Martin with a 33cm flounder winning €45 outing pot and a €50 voucher for Mooney boats.
Lucky peg draw was won by Pat Byrne Peg 12 winning €30.
And by coming 4th today and topping the overall league after all 12 outings with 199pts well done to Darren Rawdon. Prizes and presentations in our sponsors Mooney boats fishing tackle to follow for that.
