The end of the season is approaching for Paddy Dunworth of Celtic Angling but he’s still got some fishing to do…
After a very dry summer we’ve slipped into Autumn with season’s end now in sight. The broken weather of the past couple of weeks has brought welcome water but mostly too much. River levels have been yo-yoing up and down and not settling, just when the levels dropped back to a fishable height the heavens would open again with 20km+ winds also a daily factor.
Vascular surgeon, Timothy Leim and his LA based son Alex joined me on Tuesday (16 September), breaking their journey from Inishmore to Dingle. Oregon is their home State and dad Tim has been fly-fishing almost 20 years but Alex is a novice.
We fished the Maigue at Cherrygrove near Banogue and it was in fine fettle at .345m on the Bruree water station, a peaty coloured water but with good visibility. Wet fly was the natural choice.

Novice Alex struck first, the casting tuition on grass earlier paid dividends with a nice fish within 5 minutes of starting. We had left dad Tim to fish on his own at the first pool upriver from Cherrygrove Bridge, and he too was having success with two very nice fish overall.

They’re hoping to return in May on my advice, with a brother-in-law in tow as well. They were a joy to guide and thrilled to bits with the natural beauty of the location and the experience of catching native wild brown trout in a natural timeless river, all fish carefully released of course.
