West Cork and District SAC fished a competition at Caliso Bay on Sunday…

Caliso Bay was the venue for our latest open competition. This venue has been very good to us in the past, regularly producing a wide variety of species and some excellent catches.

However, the persistent easterly winds slowed the fishing considerably and the venue never really reached its full potential. While fish were caught throughout the session, catches were well below what anglers would normally expect from this productive stretch of coastline.

Despite this, a wide variety of species were still recorded on the day. Catches included bass, corkwing wrasse, ballan wrasse, scorpion fish, bull huss, dogfish, flounder and some specimen shore rockling, while some other unusual species also showed up in the higher pegs.

The Longest Round Fish Pool on the day would go to Dave Kennedy with an absolute cracker of a 92cm bull huss, a fish that was a well-deserved winner of the pool. Sean O’Sullivan would claim the Longest Flat Fish Pool with a fine 31cm flounder. Unlucky not to take the Longest Round Fish Pool was Paul Forde, whose excellent 56cm bass would have been enough to win on many other occasions. Well done, lads.

The top three anglers on the day all finished with ten fish each, with very little separating them at the final whistle. However, the day belonged to Brendan Wall, who put together an excellent card in the challenging conditions to claim a well-deserved victory. Well done Brendan, consistent as always. Continuing his good run of form of late, James Ryan would go on to take second place. Well done, James. Alan O’Dowling rounded out the top three with a fine third-place finish. Well done, Alan.

Thanks to all the anglers who turned out to support the competition once again. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. We look forward to seeing you all again soon.
