    Boyle is located in the Upper Shannon Region and lies at the foot of the Curlieu Mountains, on the main Dublin/Sligo N4 route.

    WHERE TO FISH 

    There are a number of productive fisheries within the vicinity of Boyle which hold good stocks of most coarse fish, including Bream, Roach, Tench. Some noted pike fishing lakes are also available. Lough Key in particular boasts a former Irish record Lake Pike of 39 lbs. 3ozs caught by Michael Egan on the 11th of April1993 and was only relatively recently beaten in 2002. Five other lakes are described including three hotspots on the Boyle River.  Other neighbouring angling centres describe a lot of other fisheries and angling hotspots of which Boyle can serve as a good base. CARRICK ON SHANNON and DRUMSHANBO are but a short distance away and have a myriad of coarse  fisheries.

    Oakport lake is a very nice lake located 6 miles northeast of Boyle beside the village of Cootehall.  Fishing is into 10 feet of water and the lake has bream to 5 lbs, roach rudd and hybrids.

    FACILITIES AND ACCESS: The Inland Fisheries Ireland has erected a number of access footbridges and stiles along this section and fishing is from the shore. There is also two concrete stands along the softer part of the shore.

    HOW TO GET THREE: From Boyle take  the N4 east for about 4 miles, turn left in the direction of Knock vicar. Continue for about 0.5 mile and access is located off the Coillte property on your right hand side.

    This is very weedy lake located 3 miles southeast of Boyle on the Knockvicar road which holds good stocks of tench to 5lbs with a small stock of other coarse fish including  bream, roach and perch.

    FACILITIES AND ACCESS: At the moment the Inland Fisheries Ireland have removed the long platform along the public road for safety reasons and the only remaining concrete stand is accessed to the left of the car park through the reeds.

    TO GET THERE: From Boyle take the N4 east for three miles and turn left  in the direction of Knockvicar, the lake is about a half a mile along this road, located on the left hand side.

    Lough Key is a large lake with a very good stock of pike. The lake produced the Irish record on the 11th of April1993 at 39 lbs. 3 ozs and frequently records specimen pike to 20+lbs.  The lake also holds a very good stock of  bream to 5lbs, roach and hybrids. The best areas for coarse fishing area Doon shore, Erris bay and the Knockvicar side of the lake.

    FACILITIES AND ACCESS: Access can be difficult and the best results can be gained by using a boat to access one of the islands or the shore of the lake.

    HOW TO GET THERE: Forest Park: From Boyle take  the N4 road east of Boyle for about 2 miles, turn left into the Forest Park following the sign posts.  Doon shore: Take the N4 west for about 2 miles and follow the sign posts, turning right onto Doon shore.

    This lake is 3 miles southeast of Boyle along the Knockvicar road. Fishing is into10 to 20 feet of water along any of the 50 single stands on the lake. The lake holds good stocks of bream rudd roach and hybrids.

    FACILITIES AND ACCESS: The lake is accessed though Coillte land. Anglers should note that you are not allowed to drive cars to the lake without express permission from Coillte

    TO GET THERE: From Boyle take the N4 east for about 3 – 4 miles, turning left for Knockvicar. Continue for half a mile until you meet the Coillte gates situated on your right hand side. The lake is here.

    Lough Gara Lower is one of three lakes, a large body of water which holds good stocks of all coarse fish.  This is a noted pike fishery where fish to 20lbs+ are regularly recorded.

    FACILITIES AND ACCESS: There are two access points to the lake, one on the northern shore and the other is on the southern shore. Both areas have car parking facilities, a slipway to launch a boat and fishing stands. Open shore fishing is possible. There is good access for pike fishing from these points.

    TO GET THERE: From Boyle take the local road out of Boyle for about 6 to 7 miles in the direction of Monastadan village, the lake is adjacent to the public road – northern end and southern end.

    Shanballybaun lake holds a good stock of Bream, Roach, Hybrids and Rudd.

    FACILITIES AND ACCESS: The Inland Fisheries Ireland has 3 stiles, 2 footbridges and 3 double stands on the lake.

    To get there: From Boyle take the Coothall road. To the northeast of the village of Cootehall the lake can be accessed though private lands and permission must be obtained from the landowner. The lake is a remote venue and can be difficult to locate, ask locally if in doubt.

    Drumbridge

    This is a very good area 1.5 miles northeast of the town of Boyle. The area can produce very good bags of Bream in May and also holds good stocks of roach and Hybrids. The new canal enters the river downstream of this area and the angling is improving along this section of water.

    Facilities and Access: Inland Fisheries Ireland has 3 single stands along the soft bank. The Board have erected a number of access stiles and footbridges along the southeastern bank.

    To get there: From Boyle take the old Sligo road west past the GAA football pitch, turning right into Drumbridge.

    Boyle river  (Knockvicar)

    Knockvicar is a village 4 miles to the northeast of Boyle accessed via the N4. The Boyle river flows though the village and this section of river holds good stocks bream to 5lbs roach and hybrids. This section of river has holes of 15 feet deep which you can fish into.

    Facilities and Access: Inland Fisheries Ireland have a number of access stiles and footbridges along this section.

    How to get there: Take the N4 east out of Boyle for about 4 miles, take a left into the village of Knockvicar.

    Boyle river Cootehall

    Cootehall is a small village 6 miles to the northeast of Boyle accessed via the N4. The Boyle river flows though the village. Fishing is upstream or downstream of the bridge and there are good stocks of bream, roach, hybrids and rudd to 2 lbs.

    Facilities and Access: Inland Fisheries Ireland have access stiles and three concrete stands along this section of river.

    How to get there: Same as Knockvicar.
