    Carrick on Shannon located in the Upper Shannon Region in Co Leitrim is a major angling centre which is very well serviced with quality and specialist accommodation and tackle stores.

    WHERE TO FISH

    This is a very extensive coarse angling area with an abundance of fishing hotspots available both on the main River Shannon and the many lakes in the system. The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board has angling structures on many of these waters to facilitate anglers,  including some wheelchair friendly access and facilities.  Certain waters are on private land and we ask you to seek permission to access these fisheries. The area is very well serviced and caters well for visiting anglers with specialist accommodation providers and tackle shops etc

    Lough Boderg is a large lake of about 3000 acres located on the River Shannon. It’s has fair stocks of  Bream and also holds good quality Hybrids, Rudd, Roach and Perch. It offers good pike angling opportunities.

    FACILITIES & ACCESS

    There is is an open bank section with 20 pegs where anglers can fish into about 10 feet of water.  Access to the lake is through Derrycarne Forest Park which lies about seven miles south east of the town of Carrick-on-Shannon. There is a  signpost off the N4. Facilities includes a car park and anglers are requested that cars park in the car park only and not on the lakeshore. There is public boat launching access at Dromod Marina. This is about 2 miles further east on the N4.

    TO GET THERE

    From Carrick on Shannon take the N4 south for 7 miles. At the top of the Hill pub,  take the old N4 road to the right and turn right just after the railway bridge, follow signposts to Derrycarne wood.

    This is a 20-acre lake . It has very good stocks of  Bream to 4lb, Hybrids, Roach and Rudd. It also has a limited stock of good sized tench.  During the summer the margins can get very weeded and can be difficult to fish.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES 

    Access is poor. The Inland Fisheries Ireland has 6 stiles and three footbridges on  this water, which is a shore only venue.  There are ten pegs on the eastern side of the lake.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the N4 east (the new road layout on the N4), access is via the Dromod roundabout, take the third exit.  Travel for about half a mile and take the first right, continue over the railway line. The lake is located on your left about half a mile from here. The lake is sign posted.

    Gortinty Lake

    Gortinty Lake covers 60 acres. The lake holds Tench to 3lbs, Hybrids, Roach, Bream to 3lbs and skimmers. The lake can also produce good Pike fishing.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES

    You will find 12 bank pegs on the eastern shore along the N4. Here you can fish into 8 feet of water. If you take the by-road off the N4 along the southern shore you will find 15 shore pegs where you can  fish into 12 feet of water. Access is across private land and you are asked to have respect for the landowners property. The Inland Fisheries Ireland has 6 stiles accessing this lake.

    TO GET THERE: Gortinty is along the N4, 5 miles east of Carrick-on-Shannon.

    Lough Aduff (sometimes referred to as Annaghduff) is along the N4, 4½ miles south of Carrick-on-Shannon. This is a very good Bream and Roach water with good Tench present to 5lbs.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES: The Inland Fisheries Ireland provide six double fishing stands along the south eastern shore accessible via two fields from the car park which is located off the N4 road, follow signposts.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the N4, 4½ miles heading east. The lake is located on your left just after the Drumsna fly-over.

    This is a noted Tench fishery with specimen fish to over 6lbs present. This 5 acre lake also has good stocks of Roach, Hybrids and Bream of 3lbs to 4lbs. The lake is shallow and gets quite weedy particularly during the summer months.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES: Fishing is from a double fishing stand provided by the Inland Fisheries Ireland.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the N4 south to the village of Drumsna taking the Strokestown road out of the village. Continue on for a mile, keep left at the fork in the road and take the next left to the fishery.

    Tully Lake is a  45-acre fishery ½ mile south of the village of Killmore. The lake holds good quality Bream to 6lbs, Tench to 6lbs, Hybrids, Roach and Rudd. However the lake does get very weedy in the summer.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES: Fishing is from 5 bank pegs into 10 feet of water.  There is a small car park and the Inland Fisheries Ireland provide 2 access stiles.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the N4 south to the Village of Drumsna, follow the sign post to the village of Killmore. As the lake may be difficult to find ask at the guest house for help.

    Headford Lake

    Headford is a small very shallow lake located about 1½ mile north east of the village of Drumsna. The lake has a good stock of fish but is hampered in summertime by the excessive weed growth.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES 

    Access is across one stile though private land to one double fishing stand erected by the Inland Fisheries Ireland. Please respect landowners property.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the N4 east in the direction of Drumsna. Take the slip road for Drumsna,  turn left and take the next right for about 2 miles which will take you to the lake on the right hand side, follow signposts.

    Drunharlow is a large lake of about 1000 acres. There are two important shore angling sections on the lake  on the north and south shore described below. This is also an excellent trout fishery, best times May-June and September.

    FACILITIES AND ACCESS

    FIRST SECTION

    The first section on the north shore can be accessed from Carrick on Shannon – see directions below.  This section is fishable in mid to low water levels only. Bream, Roach and Perch are the predominant species.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the  Drumshanbo Road for half a mile, turn left for Cootehall.  Cross the Shannon at Hartley Bridge, continue for about 1 mile, the  northern shore of the lake can be accessed from here (see signposts). The Inland Fisheries Ireland have 2 stiles, a number of old type concrete fishing stands and a number of bank pegs. Fishing into 10 feet of water this section should produce good fishing for Skimmers, Hybrids and Roach.

    SECOND SECTION

    This is on the southern shore of the lake. From Carrick on Shannon take the N4 west for about 4 miles, turn right (signposted Drumharlow Lake) onto a narrow public road to a small car park. The ShRFB have angling structures here which include 1 stile, 1 footbridge and 1 double fishing stand to facilitate anglers. This shore has 5 good bank pegs which can produce good Bream, Hybrids, Roach and Rudd fishing.

    Lough Bran is a 60-acre lake located 4 miles northeast of Carrick-on-Shannon and can be accessed off the Ballinamore road. This is a very good Bream water with a stock of Roach, Hybrids and Tench to 4lbs. Tench are often reported as difficult to catch and somewhat elusive.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES: Fishing is from 20 single stands into 10 to 15 feet of water. One of these is wheelchair friendly and located at the car park. This is a modern floating structure and anglers are reminded that priority should be given to anglers with disabilities.  The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board has also 5 stiles and 1 footbridge along this section of the lake with easy access from the car park.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the Drumshanbo road for 4 miles,  turn right onto the Ballinamore road. The lake is clearly visible on the right, and is signposted.

    Hillstreet Lake

    The Hillstreet lakes are a group of small interlinked  lakes 5½ miles to the north of Strokestown and just south of the village of Hillstreet. This is just a short distance from Drumsna village. These lakes have a rich stock of Bream, Rudd, Hybrids Roach. This is also a very good Pike fishery, particularly productive during the winter months.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES: Access points are well sign posted and the Inland Fisheries Ireland provide four stands, two stiles and four footbridges to facilitate anglers.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the Elphin road for about 3 miles and follow the signposts for Hillstreet village, a distance of about 7 miles. All fishing venues are signposted from the village.

    Drumsna R Shannon

    This section of river has good quality Roach to 2lbs, Hybrids and Bream. However the quality of fishing is very dependent on the weather and the river can rise quickly during wet weather.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES: This is an open bank fishery where you will find 20 bank pegs on the upstream side of the bridge with 4 stiles and 2 footbridges. There are a number of bank pegs on the downstream side of the moorings  which can be very productive. Access to this area is across private land so do seek permission from the local landowner before accessing the fishery. For boat anglers – use the slipway at the harbour, particularly for pike angling which can be good in the downstream sections.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the N4 five miles to the east. Drumsna village is sign posted.

    Jamestown R Shannon

    This section is on the main River Shannon. The fishing hotspots are upstream and down stream of the weir.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES: There are 20 good bank swims, which hold good stocks of Bream, Hybrids and Roach. Access is though private land via a stile provided. This is located in Jamestown village on the old N4.

    On the downstream side of the weir you will find 20 good swims where you can  fish into about 10 feet of water. These swims hold quality Roach, Bream and Hybrids. In the fast water just below the weir is a noted spot for wild brown trout to 6lbs+. The Inland Fisheries Ireland have 5 access stiles in the area to facilitate anglers.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the N4 east for about 4 miles. The village of Jamestown is sign posted off the N4.

    Mudflats R Shannon

    This is a very popular match stretch on the River Shannon. The section holds Bream, Roach,  Hybrids and other coarse fish.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES: The Inland Fisheries Ireland have erected 2 continuous board walks servicing 25 International match standard angling spaces. This Board walk can be accessed from 3 locations which greatly improves the convenience and safety of anglers using the upgraded facility which will be fully completed for 2009 angling season. Downstream of the facility there are 2 stiles providing access to15 open bank swims.

    TO GET  THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the Elphin road for about 2 miles,  take the first left, cross over the railway line which will take you down to the fishery at Mrs Byrnes house.

    Hartley Bridge R Shannon

    Hartley Bridge is on the River Shannon, to the north of Carrick-on Shannon. This can be a very productive venue in May as the shoals of Roach migrate up river to spawn.  There are also Bream to 3lbs, Hybrids and Rudd in the section.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES: Fishing is from 20 bank swims into 6 to 10 feet of water. The Inland Fisheries Ireland has 1 access stairs and 1 stile into this fishery.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the Drumshanbo road for about 0.5 mile and turn left (signposted Cootehall). Continue  travelling on for another 2 miles approx where you will meet the Shannon at Hartley Bridge.

    Leitrim Bridge River Shannon

    The section of the River Shannon described here is located at Leitrim Village. This can be a very productive stretch in May and into early June. The area produces Bream, Roach and Hybrids.

    ACCESS & FACILITIES: Fishing is from 10 bank pegs where the Inland Fisheries Ireland has 2 stiles and 1 footbridge  to facilitate anglers.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the Drumshanbo road north for 4 miles until you come to the village bridge.

    Battle Bridge River Shannon

    Battlebridge is on the river Shannon to the northwest of Leitrim village. This can be a very productive water in May and into early June as the Roach and Bream migrate to spawn.  This is also a very good trout fishery, early and late season.

    ACCESS AND FACILITIES: Fishing is from 40 bank pegs into 6 to 10 feet of water. The Inland Fisheries Ireland has 6 stiles, 7 footbridges and 1 stairs into this fishery to facilitate anglers.

    TO GET THERE: From Carrick on Shannon take the Drumshanbo Road to Leiitrim village. Turn left until you come to Battlebridge about 3 miles to the northwest of Leitrim village.
