Excellent sea trout fishing and a few salmon on Lough Currane

Guide Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane where sea trout fishing has been excellent at times…

1 Sep: There was some good fishing on the Waterville Fishery today so straight to the action. In the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. John Delap caught 5 juniors on the drift. Now we cut across Lough Currane to the North side and the bungalow, US angler Murry  Beets caught 3 Juniors, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Wind W strong and overcast with mist rain throughout the day.

2 Sep: There was some good Sea Trout fishing on the Waterville Fishery again today so straight to the action. Mr. Arnold Slater, caught 1 junior to his fly rod, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Also in good form in the C&R fly department was Mr. David Burton of Yorkshire, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 3 Juniors to his fly rod. Now for Lough Currane’s catch of the day and that goes to Mr. Liam McKnight of West Meath, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. junior Scully, caught two Juniors and finished his day off with a cracker of a Sea Trout weighing in at 6 ½ lbs. The rest of angling community they either caught nothing or too dam lazy to let their fingers do the talking, either way they have failed and let the angling and local community down. Wind SW with reasonable cloud cover.

3 Sep: Before we get today’s manipulations a Important Notice from Mr. Rod Robinson. We have finally managed to get a date for the IFI Economist to come down and give a presentation on the joint survey WL&RT and IFI carried out last year on the economic benefit of angling tourism to the Waterville economy. It will be at 7:30 on the 9th September at the Waterville Inn, all welcome. Now for today’s action or the lack of it I should say, we start with first thing this morning, it was calm and come lunchtime it was like the wild west, with a strong SW wind blowing down the lake, some anglers stuck to their battle stations and some anglers headed for calmer waters, ie the Bars and going back to the anglers that kept manipulating their flies, one angler said it was like a Chinese takeaway out there, all I kept getting was a Bird’s nest.

4 Sep: Straight to the Sea Trout fly department, We start with the Killarney Salmon and Trout Anglers, which had their annual outing on Lough Currane and fishing out of www.lakelandshouse.com by all accounts they had good sport with Sea Trout up to 2 lbs and the Angler of the day was Mr. Seamus O’ Laughlin, who caught 4 good Sea Trout and met well over 40 more. Now we cut across the Lake to the North side and the Bungalow, Dutch Angler and no stranger to the Waterville Fishery, Mr. William Woermeijer, caught 5 Sea Trout on the fly while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of  www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Staying at the Bungalow, Mr. David Burton, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com, caught one Junior on the drift, which was sportingly put back. Wind variable with good cloud cover and very humid.

5 Sep: Dutch Angler, Mr. William Woermeijer while fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 1 Sea Trout to his fly rod and for the rest of the angling community they failed in all departments. Now here is a warning to all the anglers that have failed miserably in catching and in reporting their catches. Wind SW light with misty rain for most of the day.

6 Sep: Lough Currane was all quiet on all fronts and not surprising with the fog nearly to the ground this morning and one would have thought as it lifted plus a nice light breeze from the South some anglers would have seen some action even though it was very humid, to give you some idea this evening at 9. 30 pm it was 18c so on that note we head for the Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com backdate department Mr. Marc Luyton from Belgium and party, we start on the River Inny, in the last few days they have caught 3 Grilse up to 6 lbs. and returned 2. So they left the Inny and headed out on Lough Currane and so far Marc has recorded 9 Sea Trout and his good friend Dirk has caught 4 Sea Trout. Just for the record they have seen a good few Sea Trout and the same goes for the Salmon.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Plenty of water and fish at Owenmore following dry conditions

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports:

03 September: The recent dry spell has finally ended. We had torrential rain on Thursday. The river was in perfect order on Friday. There are still fish running. There were grilse and sea trout met, all fresh with sealice. Saturday morning raining heavily at the moment. The river is going to rise so it will be Sunday before it will fish. We have very high tides at the moment and with plenty fresh water everything is looking good for the next week. We will take two hours off on Sunday and we will watch Tipperary give Kilkenny a right good game of it and maybe we might have new All Ireland Champions and when the celebrations are starting we will be back on the river lifting into fish so we have the best of everything.

The World Pairs got off to a great start yesterday and some really smashing bags of bream at Bunerky helped to set the bar high for this years competition. The top weight in Brackley Lake was David Herron with 19.350kg.

Steve Fleming on Bunerky Lake with some of his catch of 38.325kg at the same venue

The Current standings are as follows:

German pair  Jens Koschnick and Thorsten Kusters are leading the pairs competition on 64.980kg, about 3kg ahead of second placed Howell/Hilier and 10kg clear of Scott/Buchwalder in 3rd place.

Alex Murray on Bunerky Lake with some of his catch of 34.525kg

Obviously it’s one of the Germans in top spot for the Daiwa Cu p – Jens Koshnick on a very solid 45.030kg. northern Ireland’s Nick Howell is not far behind on 39.960kg and Steve Fleming, England, just behind him on 38.325kg.

Now into September, Lough Sheelin is at the back end of its fishing season. Just as early autumn weather conditions typically waver between summer-like and more traditionally autumn-like weather, so does trout behaviour.  As a result, a mix of summer and autumn fly fishing tactics lead to good success out on the lake this week.

Sheelin’s first September bar of gold – Tony Grehan’s trout of 3lb caught on a Sooty Olive
Sheelin’s first September bar of gold – Tony Grehan’s trout of 3lb caught on a Sooty Olive

Although into early autumn, summer schedules are still in effect on Sheelin, though leaves have begun to turn air temperatures were still high and along with low rainfall this means that water temperatures have not changed from the summertime and morning and evening still had the edge as being the best times to target feeding trout.

The Hatches

Trout were showing themselves with splashy rises and aerial gymnastics but there was little interest in surface feeding and it was the teams of wets and the lures that brought in this week’s results.  The sedges although in abundance in shoreline trees and bushes stubbornly refused to go out on to the water and it was only in the odd very sheltered area that an angler might stumble on a Murrough or a small sedge but nothing to get excited about and for this week the caddis was not of interest to the trout and consequently not to the angler.

A misconception is that autumn means strictly fishing below surface but although it wasn’t an exciting week for the dries, trout do feed aggressively on the dries well into September and if the weather is conducive there will be abundant hatches of sedges, olives (Bog Bay and Sailors Garden) and buzzer on this lake, so don’t leave the dry flies at home yet.

The Catches

The first day of the new month was heralded in with the sound of gun fire as the start of the duck shooting season began at first light and it was a little like that 1961 film ‘The Guns of Navarone’ but this didn’t last long and did not deter the Sheelin anglers with a decent number of angling boats on the water.  Tony Grehan from Dublin broke the new month in beautifully with a fine trout of  3lbs using a Sooty Olive pattern.  The start of the week was poor on this lake but as the days progressed some good fishing was reported with the weight of the week hitting in at over 7lbs caught by Navan angler Christopher Defillon.

A September beauty from Sheelin
A September beauty from Sheelin

Areas of the lake for good fishing varied according to wind direction – Lynch’s pt down to Derrysheridan was good for Malcom Graham using Silver and Claret Dabblers and out in the deep on lures as well as Sooty Olives and Red Tailed Peters proved exciting and rewarding for others. When the fish are taking on the blind as they have been over the past few days, there is a lot of luck in it, if you’re lucky enough that the trout happens to be looking up when the artificial is within that window of vision then there’s a take.

Fishing on Sheelin is a lot like opening presents because fishing is all about surprises as well.  You might head out after hearing the lake is fishing well but you are never guaranteed success so catching on Lough Sheelin is a gift and the quote from John Gierach ‘if you fish the wrong fly long and hard enough, it will sooner or later become the right fly’ is worth a thought as well.

The heaviest fish for this week was a superb 7 lb trout caught by Navan angler Christopher Defillon, August 30th.

Total number of trout recorded : 69

Selection of Catches

  • Tony Grehan, Dublin – September 1st 1 trout at 3lb plus in Sandy Bay using a Sooty Olive
  • Danny O’Keefe, Mullingar – August 31st at Wilsons pt. 1 trout at 2 lbs on a Green Peter
  • Cian Murtagh, Cavan – 1st September, 2 trout at 1 ½ and almost 4lbs, both on wet Daddies.
  • Des Elliott, Dublin – 11 trout for the week 1 1/4  – 2½ lbs, heaviest at 3 1/4, all on wets – Golden Bumbles and Bibios.
  • Michael Reilly, Cavan – 3 trout heaviest at 3 ½ lbs on a Silver Dabbler and a Red Tailed Peter
  • Pat Bannon, Ballyjamesduff – August 30th 1 trout at 3lbs using a Silver Dabbler.
  • Mick Leddy, Cavan – 4 trout heaviest at 3lbs on wet flies.
  • Martin Grennan, Kilkenny fishing with Paddy Mcloughlin – 2 trout averaging 1 ½ – 2lbs – both men ‘broke their 2016 duck’ on this fishing trip last Monday.

The Flies

It was mainly intermediate lines being used and the autumn colours of yellow, claret, gold and greens with a threading of silver in various fly imitations proved to be the most successful.

Bibios
OctoBibios

And so it was the wets that dominated Lough Sheelin’s trout catches for this week with the old tried and tested flies like the Silver Daddies, the Dabblers (in Silver & Pearly), the Sooty Olives, the Bumbles, Klinkhammers and Stimulators all topping the success poll.

Dabbler
Silbver Holo Dabbler

It is a commonly known fact that trout take 99.999% of  their meals under the surface.  The other .001% of the time they will take a surface fly – not out of hunger, but to mess with the heads of anglers (just joking) but it makes obvious sense to me to put a fly or team of flies where the fish do the majority of their shopping and armed with this knowledge the Sheelin dry fly purists  certainly for this first week in September had to resort to this historical method of fishing for trout or lose out.  Dry fly anglers are not snobs I’m reassured, they just prefer the excitement of actually seeing the fish before they lose it – a Scottish angler’s comment not mine I hasten to add.

Black spider
Black spider

The Sheelin trout had fry firmly on the menu for this week as artificials with silver in them yielded the largest catches.  The lures were there too, with Minkies in black & silver as well as rabbit fur responsible for a few trout tipping the scales at over 5lbs.

Sedgehog
Sedgehog

The most popular flies were the Red Tailed Peters, Golden Olives Bumbles, the Dabblers (Silver, Sooty and Peter Ross), the Grey Flags, the Stimulators (Grey, Claret and Bling),the Black Pennells and the Black & Peacock Spiders.  Some lures were used on sinking lines – di3 and 5.

Stimulator
Stimulator

The Green George, Claret George and Detached Daddy were good, these are great teaser flies and were excellent as top droppers. The Muddlers worked well on the lake, these flies push through the water creating a bubble which attracts the feeding trout.  Other ‘pusher flies’ used to create a disturbance and used again on the top dropper were the Bibios, Zulus and Sedgehogs.  Something sleeker and more imitative on the middle like the Claret & Mallard, Silver Invicta and Wickham’s Fancy and then a flashy attractor on the point like a Dunkeld, Peter Ross or Alexandra.  The Bibio is a very versatile fly as it can work both as a top dropper attractor and a tweaked dry, when greased.

Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) Host National Angling Competition

IWA Fishing Competition in association with Waterways Ireland and supported by Inland Fisheries Ireland
The winning team from Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) Clontarf who came first at the IWA Annual Fishing Competition 2016. Congratulations to Derek, Eric, Lee and Ian.

Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) in partnership with Waterways Ireland and supported by Inland Fisheries Ireland recently hosted a national angling competition at the 12th Lock, Grand Canal, Newcastle Road in Lucan, Co Dublin . The annual competition, which is now in its twelfth year, is the largest event of its kind in the country. The competition saw over 200 anglers, with physical disabilities and other mobility impairments compete in the shore based fishing event.

The fishing event which is organised by IWA’s Day Centre located on the Newcastle Road, Lucan has grown in popularity in recent years due to the 12th Lock’s ideal location for fishing, which has safe access for people with disabilities, and a secure waters-edge suitable for wheelchairs.  The competition saw anglers travel from all over Ireland to participate in the event, which is now a regular fixture on the Irish angling calendar.

Ciaran McLoughlin, IWA Service Coordinator Lucan explained:

“Fishing is an ideal sporting and recreational activity for people with physical and sensory disabilities. Irish Wheelchair Association regularly organise trips and fishing based holidays for members of the Association. The sport is extremely popular as it presents fewer barriers and more opportunities for people with limited mobility.

The Association are extremely proud of the annual event which is the largest fishing event in the country. Today, we have over 200 people participating in the event along the canal, and this is made possible as a result of the ongoing commitment from Waterways Ireland, Inland Fisheries and Goldfish Angling.”

Speaking at the event, Dr. Ciaran Byrne,CEO of Inland Fisheries Ireland said:

“Inland Fisheries Ireland is delighted to support this competition which has become a flagship day in the angling calendar. Angling is something which can be enjoyed at any age or ability and there is a growing recognition of the value of outdoor recreation in underpinning health and well-being.

It is fantastic to see so many anglers out today learning and taking part in the pursuit. Ireland offers a wealth of rivers and lakes as well as fantastic stocks of high-quality fish and with the right protection and conservation, our fisheries resource can have a positive impact on our health, environment and economy for generations to come.”

U-turn by Inland Fisheries on Fish Farm cessation plans – Westmeath Topic

THE pressure exerted by trout anglers from Westmeath and anglers from all over Ireland, following the insistence by Inland Fisheries Ireland that it was going ahead with plans to close fish farm operations, finally brought results on Friday last, 26 August, when it was announced by the Board of IFI that it had “agreed to defer its proposal indefinitely.”

The announcement by IFI came after a top level meeting on Thursday, between the IFI Board and a joint delegation from the Trout Anglers Federation of Ireland and the National Anglers Representative Association….
