Swell times on the Kayak for Gary

Gary Robinson of Kayak Fisherman Ireland seeks solitude at sea before the humans arrive….. He reports:

With a couple of hours to spare before visitors landed for the week I decided to spend the time on the water. With the tide against me I headed for deeper water.

Gary Robinson - small pollackReaching the launch point I was delighted to be greeted by a glassy bay with not a wave or ripple in sight. This was going to be easy, so I thought. On rounding the point I found the complete opposite; large swells that were fine for drifting and jigging but not the best for dropping anchor and sending baits to the bottom. I took the sensible option and sought out the sheltered water in behind an island where anchoring would be a little more comfortable.

Gary Robinson - Scene from KayakI started out by jigging and that produced the expected few mackerel for bait and a few small pollock for sport. Nothing sizable though as the swell prevented me from getting in too close to the rocks. Once I had a couple of fresh mackerel to use as bait as a compliment to the peeler and sandeel I was carrying it was time to drop anchor.

Settling over an area that was 12 metres deep with a little bit of rough ground adjacent to sand, I dropped anchor and started sending baits to the bottom. I started with some sandeel wrapped in mackerel fillet, bound together with bait elastic. The first bite was tentative and when I lifted into it I felt a couple of head shakes and then everything locked up. No matter how much pressure was applied the hook wouldn’t budge. I suspect a conger had pulled my bait into a snag.

Gary Robinson - rod-busterThe next few offerings of peeler crab, sandeel, mackerel and combinations of all three produced nothing but dogfish for the hour that I sat over them. I am not a fan of feeding dogfish but at least they kept me busy for the short time I had on the water. I hauled anchor and headed for home and to greet the visitors that had already arrived by the time I made it back.

Gary Robinson - dogfishWith a hurricane allegedly approaching due to hit at the weekend, it looks like a trip out on the sea will be off the cards. Inland freshwater fishing is the alternative option; it may even be land based!!!

Kayak angling in Ireland

Gary discovered the thrill, freedom and pure joy of kayak fishing almost by accident. After purchasing kayaks with the intention of paddling trips with his long-suffering partner, he started to assess the suitability of such a craft as a fishing platform. Some internet searches showed him that he was not alone in his thoughts. America and Australia already had blossoming populations of kayak anglers. Needing no more encouragement, he set about rigging his first sit on top kayak and transforming it into a fishing platform to gain access to some of the more inaccessible waters. .

Low water and no catches recorded at Owenea

Lindsey Clarke reports from Owenea Fishery – Monday 22nd  to Sunday 28th August 2016.

There were a couple of small freshes on the Owenea over the week but overall the river ran at low levels. The best conditions occurred during the freshes of Monday (0.24m) and Friday (0.22m). The gauge average for the week was low at 0.16 metres. The fishery was understandably quiet with only 23 rods fishing for the week. 17 of these fished over Monday & Tuesday. No visiting rods fished at the weekend at all. To date I have no records of fish caught during the week.

Lindsey Clarke reports  from LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 22nd  to Sunday 28th August 2016.

There was little in the way of salmon angling this week with only a couple of boats venturing out after the same. I have yet to hear of any salmon caught. The trout fishing was fair however and this week The Garrison & lough Melvin Anglers hosted their 4 day Melvin Open Pairs 2016 competition. Qualifying days were on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the final held on Sunday.  Full results are available at: http://www.garrisonandloughmelvinanglersassoc.co.uk/Results_2016.pdf

The weather towards the weekend was warm and sunny with only light winds and competitors had to work for their fish. Over the qualifying days there were some good trout caught up to 4½lb caught. On Sunday, conditions were particularly challenging with high air temperatures and extended periods of sun. The competition on the final day was won by James Cox and Fechin McMorrow who each received a piece of Galway Crystal and a cheque for £2,250. In second place were Peter McKenna and Paul Rooney with James Doherty and John Brennan taking 3rd place.

Steady water levels but little angling activity on the Drowes

Lindsey Clarke reports from  the RIVER DROWES – Monday 22nd  to Sunday 28th August 2016.

Water levels on the Drowes remained fairly steady over the week with the gauge reading around 0.56m all week. The fishery was very quiet however and not many rods fished over the week. There was a few grilse recorded. Maurice Kettles and his son both caught a fish and there were a couple of other grilse recorded. Overall it was a fairly quiet week though.

Some Nice Wild Brown Trout for Daniel on the River Boyne

French angler Daniel Hodeau visited the River Boyne over the weekend and spent some time fly fishing for trout on his second day with angling guide Peter Cunningham.

Water levels were good but as fly hatches were sparse Peter decided that it would be best to try some nymph fishing techniques. The strategy paid off and Daniel caught and released some very nice wild brown trout during his visit.

Daniel had already had his first salmon with Peter on Day 1 so all in all it was a very good first time trip to the Boyne Valley.

French Anglers Enjoy Some Nice Salmon Fishing on the River Boyne

Gabriel from France with his fish from the River Boyne which he released
Gabriel from France with his fish from the River Boyne which he released

Angling guide Peter Cunningham has been in touch to let us know that water levels are just coming right on the Boyne after the last rain and that salmon fishing on the lower Boyne has not been easy during the last few weeks.

Over the weekend Daniel Hodeau and his friend Gabriel from France visited the River Boyne to try their hand at some salmon fishing. Neither angler had ever caught a salmon before and with conditions just coming right Peter was happy that their might be a chance of a fish.

However, things turned out better than expected when both Daniel and Gabriel each landed their very first ever salmon on Day 1. Even better was that Gabriel had never fished before so it was his first salmon on his very first outing. In addition to the two fish that were landed and released, 3 more fish were lost and a few missed as well.

All in all it was a great introduction to Irish salmon fishing for Daniel and Gabriel. Things were a little slower on Day 2 but Gabriel still managed to hook and land his second salmon on only his second ever day fishing. A great achievement! Both anglers were very happy indeed with their first experience salmon fishing in the Boyne Valley.

Salmon to 17lb on Bandon last week, day ticket anglers doing well

Jason Nash from the Bandon Angling Association reports on the catches and conditions on the River Bandon…

28 August: Another week down and some excellent catches were made, particularly by visitors on day tickets. One gentleman and his friend had 5 fish between them to 17lbs and another visitor, Seamus Pyke, reported excellent sport with 5 fish landed.

Seamus Pyke reales his salmon
Seamus Pyke releases his salmon – click for video

Most fish encountered during the week were stale and returned to the river, with shrimp proving to be the most effective method. A few fresh fish up to 12lbs were also caught and seen running (including big MSW fish) so hopefully a more consistent run of autumn salmon is just around the corner. Finally, we would like to remind all BAA members that September is fly and spinner only on club waters.

Jason Nash
Bandon Angling Association

Eileen Carroll Murphy IFI reports from the River Bandon for the week ended Sunday 28th August 2016:

There was a flood early last week and there was good fishing all along the river as a result. There were between 30 and 40 salmon reported although many of these were coloured There is more rain forecast for the coming weekend and hopefully that will encourage fresh fish into the system.
