Portumna Coarse Angling club get ready for 2 day event this weekend

Portumna Coarse Angling Club

Portumna Coarse Angling Club remind us of their 2 dayer on  23rd and 24th of July at the Salmon run and Sheebeen
€50 pools.  The draw is at 9 am at the venue.

Over the weekend at Little knock on the Sheebeen, the lads thought they’d give it ago before the 2dayer this weekend. Most of the fish were caught on the feeder with small roach on the pole;

Kevin 40lb 12oz
Bill 18lb 12oz
Ian 16lb 15oz
Richard 16lb 12oz
Ray 8lb

Kevin had 12 bream in his winning weight. Not known the Sheebeen fish like this for a long time.
Looking forward to the 2dayer this weekend, on the Sheebeen and Salmon run.

Delphi moves at a slow pace, though there are some nice sea trout around

David McEvoy reports from Delphi where things are moving at a slow pace:

Our Grilse fishing has not really taken off yet, but hopefully like last year we will see a big improvement in the last two weeks of July and the first week in August. Despite some lovely water since my last update and good fishing pressure, the fishing was slow. We have landed seven fish since my last update all of which were grilse.

Roger Kenny was first off the mark last week and indeed it was great to see. Roger takes his fishing at a leisurely pace so it was all the more special when he landed a nice grilse of 3lbs 13ozs on a Collie Dog in the Quarry Pool. John Faith also had a nice fish that evening of 5lbs 8ozs from the Rock Pool on a Foxford Shrimp.

Delphi - July 2016 18thThe following day the 12th there were three landed. David Allcutt had one of 3lbs 7ozs from the Rock Pool on a Cascade and then Helmut Lechermann had one from Cooleens of 3lbs 6ozs on an Allie Shrimp. Andrew Norris from Dublin also managed to land his first ever salmon, a small grilse of 2lbs 8ozs from the Grilse Pool on a Cascade.

David Allcutt landed his second for the week on Friday morning, again on the Rock Pool of approx. 4lbs on a Delphi Collie. Finally Mike Shortt had a fish of 3lbs 14ozs yesterday from the Bridge Pool on a Cascade.

There are still some nice sea trout being caught and George and Helen Westropp landed five on Saturday evening including two of approx. 2.5lbs.

The weather has improved dramatically here today with clear blue skies and bright sunshine and temperatures into the 20’s, so there is plenty of beautiful scenery to admire. Hopefully the next couple of weeks will see an improvement in the runs of fish!

Swimmers risking lives at reservoir
Wicklow People: Swimmers risking lives at reservoir

Members of the public are trespassing and endangering themselves by jumping into the freezing waters from the reservoir wall while summer algae bloom is on the water. The area, near Wicklow Rugby Club, is leased off Wicklow County Council by Vartry Angling Club and is private land. Conor McGuire and fellow club members are concerned that someone could end up in difficulty in the water. The area isn’t manned by a lifeguard…

Irish Times: Another Life: Why killer whales aren’t eating our seals – so far as we know

If ever I fell short of ancient episodes about which to wince in the depths of night I could reach for the time I grossly, incredibly, misidentified a dead whale washed up on the strand below. It was bad enough to have thought that a sort of roundy head turned a perfectly ordinary pilot whale into a killer whale – this without even the bright white patches and dramatically tall dorsal fin of the orca…

10 ways to boost a beef farm’s natural biodiversity
AgriLand.ie: 10 ways to boost a beef farm’s natural biodiversity

Farmers’ actions play a key role in maintaining and managing existing natural habitats while there are opportunities to create new habitats on beef farms according to Teagasc.

  1. Leave A Whitehorn Tree In Every Hedge

This provides pollen for the bees and other insects and haws as food for the birds.

  2. Allow Routinely Trimmed Hedgerows Grow Taller

Birds nest in hedgerows over 1.4m high which provide cover from predators. A mixture of hedgerows that are routinely trimmed and ones that are allowed grow is preferable.

  3. Clean Watercourses In An Environmentally Friendly Way

When cleaning a channel, just remove vegetation and silt and spread thinly along the bank. Leave stone and gravel undisturbed and retain bank slopes in tact with a margin of vegetation…

A team of Tús workers from the district have built a stunning 26ft traditional cot rowing boat modelled after the Slaney cots of old. Built using Douglas fir and spruce over a six-week period, the boat was launched at St Kearns, Saltmills in late June. The Tús workers built the boat as their Woodworking course project, which was carried out in conjunction with Tommy Kelly of Bevel Furniture in Saltmills. The course has been run successfully for three consecutive years…

Irish Times - Angling Notes: Advice on eating and storing ice-counter fish in UCD study

Consumers should cook ice-counter fish on day of purchase or the day after, otherwise they should be frozen until required. Fresh fish is of paramount importance to consumers and lapses in the cold chain are unacceptable, according to a study conducted in UCD on the freshness of fish on sale at retail level. The objective of the survey was fourfold…

Some Nice Salmon Fishing on the Boyne

Peter Cunningham Returns A Nice Double Figured Salmon to the Boyne

Water levels have been up and down in the River Boyne over the last few weeks and some salmon have been moving through the system. Angling guide Peter Cunningham has been out and about recently on the River Boyne and has been having some nice salmon fishing. Best fish taken recently included a lovely fresh fish of circa 12 to 13lbs. Over the last few outings Peter has had a few smaller fish as well. There are a few sea trout moving on the lower end of the fishery and fishing should improve as water levels drop further.

Fishing Picks Up on the Castletown River

A Fishy Looking Stretch on the Castletown River

Angling guide and instructor Eamonn Conway has been in contact with some fishing news from the Castletown River in the north east. He reports “after the recent rain, my local river has gone up nicely and the fishing has taken a turn for the better. The rise in water means that the sea trout are running throughout the Castletown river system. Fishing with small streamers in the coloured water is working well for them at the moment and during the day nymphs are working well in the runs. The brown trout fishing has also picked up on this river with some nice trout feeding actively and confidently in the fresh water. The fly-fishing at night for sea trout will return to normal when the water clarity goes back to normal.
