Big pike still biting on Derg

Nice fish for Owen this morning....He dosent look happy ....but he was ....really

Terryglass Angling & Conservation Club held their June Pike Competition at the weekend. Despite the very strong wind conditions there was a good turn out with most boats fishing up the River Shannon in calmer conditions. There were only 4 pike of any size caught which was a bit disappointing for this time of the year.

Seamus Murphy continued his run of luck and succeeded in taking 1st prize with an 86cm, and Jason Molloy took 2nd with 70cm, and Mark Harding took 3rd with 68cm. This was their first Competition using their new aluminium measuring boards, with the printing done by Nenagh Guardian Print. Prizes were kindly sponsored by Miread Tierney, Paddys Bar, Terryglass who also provided hot food and sandwiches during the evenings “Après Angling”.

Down the lake Paul Bourke had better fishing and managed to get Owen on to some good fish on Friday. Saturday proved better. One angler in the group broke his PB twice twice. The pike ranged from were 103cm, 101 cm, 93 cm to 91 cm. And some smaller ones too. Casting in small bays full of weed and lilly pads worked best on the day.

French guide Pierre Monjarret also had good fishing over the weekend particularly on Sunday and Monday of this week.

Superb trout fishing continues on Lough Mask

Ronan Cusack reports on fishing on Lough Mask. Good fishing was reported again this week, as the Welshman’s button sedge fly hatch off in good numbers. John Burke, Foxford, had what he described as one of the best days fishing ever on Mask last Saturday. John fished with Miriam Gallagher, Crossmolina and they boated a total of 20 trout over the size limit and also returned numerous undersize fish. They spent the day fishing around the Dog Holes and took fish all day on both wets and dries. The good news spread fast, as Stephen Browne who is also a Lough Conn angler, had a similar day on Monday. Stephen had over a dozen keepable trout, again on both wets and dries. Denis Kelleher, Tom Mulvey and Richie Cameron, Ballinrobe, all fished together on Sunday last and they finished with a total of 9 over the size limit (best fish 2lbs). David Connors had 3 good fish on dries for a few hours on Sunday morning last (best fish 2.5lbs, all returned).

With no major improvement in our summer weather in sight, the good fishing looks set to continue according to Ronan. The lake has produced consistently superb sport so far this year, so this is welcome news from the local expert. Ronan also guides on Mask and can be contacted at [email protected]

Skipper Kit Dunne likes when things are busy and the last month has certainly kept the crew active, he reports:

Its been a Month of spectacular fishing in Wicklow, from specimen Tope to numerous double figure Smooth Hounds and big codling. The big fish started with a new record claim of 19lb in May, this has been followed by 23 double figure Hounds to 18.1lb in the last Month, some fine Codling and a 45lb Specimen Tope.

Drew Mc Min
Drew Mc Min had a massive take while targetting Hounds with a crab bait, after a struggle he landed this beautiful Cod.

David Bailey landed a fine 45lb Tope on a favourite Wicklow mark. David lost his rods and reels recently so Kit gave him the famous TRONIXPRO Prodigy Big 30lb rod, the same rod used to land the 19lb Hound in May.

Good wreck and shark fishing at Kinsale

coalfish
A good coalfish for Silver Dawn

Good wrecking and shark catches are being reported by anglers fishing with the charter boats based in Kinsale, Co. Cork…

John Harrington reports some unbelievable fishing with Ger Murphy, Sea Breeze Angling Kinsale…

ling
A good ling for Sea Breeze III. One of the few that made it through the sharks

We went wreck fishing for ling on Wednesday (01 July) and ended up with nearly as many sharks as ling because they were taking our fish as we reeled them in. I even landed one that took a rubber muppet as I reeled it up!

shark
In the end 9 sharks were brought to the boat and a few more were shaken off at the side!

We finished with 12 ling to 20lb and nine sharks (without rubbydubby) and a couple of good size whiting. And that’s not including the half fish!

Meanwhile the reports from the anglers out on Mike Dennehy’s Silver Dawn are also that the fish are plentiful on the wrecks at the moment.

Captain Pedro Walsh with a fine cod

Well known specimen hunter Sidney Kennedy had a decent ling recently and there have been a number of good fish in the boat including some fine cod and coalfish.

Grilse and sea trout runs improve in parts of West Cork

Eileen Carroll reports that there was a bit of a pick up in salmon fishing in West Cork as the grilse run got underway…

Salmon running the Bandon, grilse and fish to 12lb landed

Salmon
Michael Foran's salmon taken on a trout fly

There was a small improvement in fishing last week on the Bandon with about 8 fish reported mainly small grilse and two coloured salmon…

Grilse and some bigger salmon are now beginning to run in better numbers. On Wednesday (24 June) 4 fish were caught on Bandon Angling Association waters with a further 2 fish lost. 2 were fresh grilse of around 4lbs, the other 2 were salmon 8-10lbs which had been in the system a week or so. On Friday fresh grilse were seen above Baxters Bridge, underlining once again that they don’t need a flood to run.

Michael Foran’s salmon taken on a trout fly.

Michael Foran adapted his tactics to the low water conditionson Sunday (28 June) and caught a lovely 12lb fish on a bead headed trout fly. On such a light set up, the fish put up a great fight. A couple more fish were also lost.

The river rose 8 inches on on Sunday evening, so is a little fresher again.

The River Bandon is a most scenic and prolific game fishing river flowing through some of the most picturesque country side in West Cork. It’s source is a few miles north west of Dunmanway from where it flows through that town and and on through the villages of Ballineen, Enniskeane, Kilcoleman, Bandon and Innishannon where it become tidal and widens into an estuary before meeting the sea past Kinsale.

Salmon to 18lb on the Laune as a few fish start running

salmon
Kieran Conlon's 37 inch salmon

Billy Downes reports that while the water level is low there are a few salmon running the river. Not all anglers are meeting fish but Colm Herernan did. He met four on Monday (29 June) and landed one on worm at O’Connor’s and lost some on the fly. I nearly walked down on two as I waded at Johnston’s at 8.30 that evening.

18lb salmon
Kieran Conlon’s 37 inch salmon, estimated at 18lb, was released after a couple of quick photographs. This super fish wins Kieran Catch of the Week.

The outstanding fish of the week was caught and returned by Kieran Conlon (angling guide and casting instructor at kspey-speyguide.blogspot.ie) at the Rock Pool on Saturday.  This was Kieran’s first day to fish the Laune as a member of the Association.  The fish was estimated at 18lbs and had long tailed sea lice. This was not a case of beginners luck as Kieran is an expert angler as well as being an A.P.G.A.I – IRL Advanced Two-Handed Casting Instructor & Guide and he has fished the Laune many times before.

There were six other fish reported for the week among them Danny Joy who had a sea liced fish of 6 lbs at Connor’s early in the week.

There were no reports of fish on Beats 1 and 2, the Killarney Lakes or the Flesk.

Beat 3: The Beat 3 water is a bit on the low side but two fish were caught during the week.

Reminder: Start times on Beat 3 is 8am and not before that.  Reminder to visitors trout fishing on all Laune Anglers waters and on Beat 3 is by fly only on single handed rods with trout flies.  (No worms allowed for trout fishing)

Prospects:  A few fish are running the river each day and there is always a chance if you are out.  I expect that if we got a rise of 18 inches we would have a few days of good fishing but a mini heat wave is on the way.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters from now to the end of July only €25 per day.
