Mick Flanagan from Midland Angling has some competition news from Guladoo and Gowna…
Our neighboring angler in North Longford has sent us details of the 3-day pike angling festival fished over the May Bank Holiday weekend. On Saturday May 2nd Lough Gualladoo is the venue with fishing from 11am-6pm.
Sunday Gowna is the venue with fishing 10am-5pm.
Bank Holiday Monday is Ladies day on Gowna and fishing is from 12 Noon- 4pm.
More on this give David Roche a bell on 086-8732919. David is making waves on the angling scene and has had some lovely trout recently. Every year some big trout are caught during the festival, and Gowna is certainly worth a trip.

Mick Flanagan tells us Owel fished well last week given the conditions…
The Fagan Lads from Multyfarnham had a cracking few hours on Owel during the recent fine weather. Martin senior and Martin Junior had some lovely trout on the troll. As you can see from the photographs the lads were basking in the brilliant sunshine.
The lake is producing some lovely trout of late, and the recent Ace Cup was won by well-known Mullingar angler Johnny O’Malley with a trout of 1.285kg. Niall Oakes finished 2nd with 1.205kg, 3rd was Brendan Murray with 1.075kg, and 4th in the senior section was Hubert Smith 0.990kg.
Juvenile winner was James Mahedy 0.590kg. It was tough going according to L.O.T.P.A. Secretary Stan McKeown as anglers had to fish with a sharp east wind, and very bright conditions. Forty-five anglers competed, and 29 anglers returned 45 trout.
This coming Sunday May 3rd Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association will host the J.O, Malley Cup. Fishing from 11am-6pm.Its certainly a busy few weeks for Owel, and on Sunday May 10th the Leinster Championships take place. Check –in Tullaghan shore fishing 1-am-6pm.

Mick Flanagan from Midland Angling was out on Ree with a group of Italian anglers who are having the fishing of their lives
Its good to see some visitors returning to Mullingar after enjoying their fishing last year. This time last year we featured Stefano Balisario, Andrea Palma, and Sandro Colangeli with some super pike from the Midlands. This time around the lads have brought pals Dario Labricciosa, Tiziano Finocchio, and Simone Antonioli on board. They arrived in Mullingar last Saturday, and are staying in Kerrigan’s B&B Harbour Street.
Andrea Palma had a Monster pike measuring 122cm
They return home next Saturday May 2nd and already have boated some huge pike on Ree. Andrea Palma had a Monster pike measuring 122cm on Sunday last, and it will be hard to beat it for the week. Mind you on day 3 of the holiday Stefano Balisario had a fish of a lifetime on the fly weighing 24lbs.

The lads were very impressed with Brian Conlon’s new Angling Center in Friars Mill Road, and also have their Mullingar Visitor guide on hand to check out what’s happening on the music scene in town and where to have a nice meal after a day’s fishing.

Now we head for the fly department, Mr. Phil Staniforth of the UK caught a fine 8 lbs. Salmon on the fly and as his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy ofwww.fishingwithdom.com dispatched Phil’s Salmon, Dominic said, well Phil that’s your lot for today? That’s what you think said Phil, you get on the fly rod and I’ll get on the oars and fair play to Phil he did and it wasn’t long before Dominic had his fly rod bent double into a fine Salmon of 8 lbs. which Phil gladly Netted. Staying with the trolling, Mr. Tom Farrer of the UK and fishing out of www.butlerarms.com caught his first ever 12 lbs. Salmon on Lough Currane, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com and may it be the first of many, I can tell you Tom and his good friend Mr. James Henchey of the UK were having a good celebration with their Gillie in the Lobster Bar this evening. Wind light to calm SE this morning, then veered SW light with good cloud cover.
That is your ration for this week, from your Ghillie/Guide and the Waterville fishery.
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. For more details see Waterville lakes and rivers system
Conditions were poor for the greater part of the week with bright sun and light winds predominating. There seems to have been little angling effort on the Lough and there is little to report it would seem.
26 April: The settled dry weather continued this week up until the weekend with bright sun and lovely spring conditions prevailing. This did not suit salmon angling but the weekend clouded over and brought rain and much cooler conditions. There were nice water levels in the river however. The river steadily fell over the week. The gauge read 0.59m on Monday and had fallen to 0.53m by Sunday. The fishery was fairly quiet and we have only heard of 5 salmon caught.
On Tuesday, John Gill had a very good day despite the bright conditions, catching 4 salmon from 6 to 12lb. He retained 1 fish and released the other 3 fish and also hooked and lost 2 other salmon, all on a Flying ‘C’ on from between the 2 bridges. On Saturday, Paul Johnston caught a 6lb grilse from the Sea Pool on a fly.

Dr. Jacques Bronkhorst had the right medicine for these pollack
The first report of pollack on the fly in Cork Harbour this year comes from Eire Bass guide Richie Ryan…
The guide was out in his boat Sea Hawk with his two good friends Dr. Jacques Bronkhorst and Kevin Mc Loughlin. Conditions dictated that the anglers stay within the confines of the harbour. One of the great things about living in the Cork area is the ability to seek shelter in adverse weather Richie says.
Dr. Jacques Bronkhorst had the right medicine for these pollack
At the start of the fly fishing session the Doc was the only one catching pollack. He eventually let the lads in on his secret …..smaller flies! The guide admires Jacques’ knowledge of fishing in the salt long before he himself was ever tempted to try it. He’s the first to admit how much he has learned over the years from his South African buddy. He is in awe at times of the simple things he and his fellow South African Louwrens Badenhorst ( Bads) do whilst on a session. Practical things like turning the boat 180 degrees if the drift just isn’t working properly is one example. Or the two of them fishing the tide line , something they would always do at home in Africa without thinking. These are the small things that can turn a good day into an excellent one. Richie makes amends here for telling Jacques “to stick to the day job ” last year. “If he ever does retire as a doctor , he would make a superb guide. Now Doc tie me a few more of those small flies ! ”
Andreas Bohien and Friend Hannas from Germany decided to stay with Kevin at Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford, guided by Kevin on their first managed some nice Pike.

Donal Kennedy sent in his first report of the season and reported god fishing from Killala Bay.
A party of anglers from Foxford, Co. Mayo, teamed up with Donal on Friday 24th April for a day’s fishing out in Killala Bay. The weather was overcast with a slight mist and patches of fog. Several drifts were carried out during the day and with seas being calm it made for a very enjoyable day for the anglers. The skipper was well prepared bringing along a good supply of bait as mackerel were exceptionally scarce.
A happy skipper, Donal Kennedy!
The first drift well out in the bay produced some fine pollack, best up to 8 lbs. After a while, the action slowed down with the odd pouting being caught and it seemed that the fish were not on the feed yet. However, as the day progressed things started to improve with some fine cod being caught, best up to 7 lbs.; this was along with pollack and ling.
The party returned home to harbour around 6pm with a fine catch of fish with many small ones being returned alive to the sea.
