Speed the key at Galway Bay SAC competition on Renvyle

Renvyle sunset

Galway Bay SAC held the latest leg of their Master Angler competition on Renvyle beach in Connemara on Saturday 22nd. 11 anglers turned up with high hopes, although a stiff northerly wind and a choppy sea greeted then with tough casting conditions. Fishing was from 6-10pm, with most expecting dogfish to show once darkness fell.

Last year this competition was won with 9 dogs, but this year the conditions were no impediment, and fishing was hectic right from the start, even with the sun still setting.

Dogfish were  coming in from the first cast, and all along the beach rod tips were bouncing and then bending as casts were reeled in, with doubles and trebles on many casts. Unhooking fish and getting them measured by a neighbour, then getting another trace baited up became a matter of speed, with the rod tip nodding away within minutes of a cast hitting the water, and those who could keep up with the pace did best. At the top end of the beach, the dogs were coming in thick and fast for Kevin O’Hara (Peg 10) and Tom Keal (Peg 8), with John Cunningham (Peg 7) and Marcin Tomaszek (Peg 9) hot on their heels.

Marcin with a treble shot

The rest of us kept up as best we could, but the best fishing was definitely on the higher pegs and it was down to those four as the match entered the final hour.

Tom with a perfect cast

Tom, who had turned up half an hour late (as usual!) was left to rue his tardiness, as Kevin pipped him by 1 fish, with an incredible 36 dogfish.

Kevin O’Hara with another treble shot

John Cunningham was third. Your correspondent was only 5th, with 27 dogs, but thoroughly enjoyed the fishing – I’ve had enough blanks in these events that a prolific night like this can be really savored and enjoyed, whatever the result.

Starry night on the shore

Dodder delight for aspiring young Dublin Anglers

The Dodder Anglers Association held a family fun day on the river at Rathfarnham last weekend. They got some fine weather, which made for a very enjoyable day out for the kids and guardians that turned up.

There was plenty of excitement and laughter as each fish was hooked, played and landed and all fish were returned to the river once a quick photo was taken. There are tons more of those photos to view on the Dodder Anglers Facebook Page.

The first leg of the new Munster Shore League competition was held at Cheekpoint last Sunday. The event was hosted by Rinnashark SAC and saw 54 competitors turn out in some very sunny weather. Bream tip the balance at Irish Canal Masters

The first qualifier for the VDE Irish Canal Masters was held on the Grand Canal last Sunday in unseasonably sunny weather. With the bright conditions, the fishing was always going to be somewhat tricky, but the competitors were delighted to see a few bream turning up. And it was those bream that swung the balance as Nicky Harrison bagged four of them on his way to a win with a level 9lb. The next qualifier will be held at Enfield on May 3rd.

Full results as follows:
1st – Nicky Harrison – Matrix Monasterevin- 9lb
2nd – Dave Clark – Swords – 8lb 5oz

Video: The Inshore Angler on how to target sting ray

Chris O’Sullivan, the Inshore Angler, is back with a new video where he targets early season sting ray and undulate ray in Tralee Bay.

Chris gives us a great run-down of the rigs he uses, and how bait presentation – and size – gives him the best chance of catching one of these amazing fish. It is a great instructional video on what to do to target these ray.

Early season report from Dungarvan charterboat Algerine

David Hehir, skipper of Dungarvan charter boat Algerine is back on the water for 2025 and sends this early season report…

We started our 2025 Season on March 25th, departing Dungarvan Harbour for a half day trip with a few local anglers aboard. Conditions were flat calm with a nice northerly breeze.

The plan was to drift over some inshore reefs for the ususal suspects and the catch report for the few hours included pollack, coalfish, pouting, ballan wrasse and cuckoo wrasse.

A good lucking Ballan Wrasse, but just short of specimen length

Mark landed a nice ballan wrasse which was on the larger size. We measured it, but it just fell a little short on specimen length. Pollack were plentiful throughout the day, a welcome sign.

Not a bad start to the season all anglers were happy heading home.
