Irish Angling Update 🎣 07 March 2025

March 1st heralded the beginning of spring for those who prefer the meteorological calendar, as opposed to the Irish version, and there was definitely more of a spring feeling in the air in places. Trout anglers in many parts of the country finally dusted off the fly rods or trolling setups and took to the loughs that opened this week, while river anglers dunked their nymphs, swung wet flies or spun lures in the hope of landing a hungry early season trout…

One angler who loves to troll for an early season trout is Mick Flanagan of Midlands Angling, and Mick did see some lovely trout on the midland loughs while fishing with old pal Marty. In Cavan, perfect water levels on tributaries of the Annalee River gave anglers the chance to catch fish using sinking lines to reach the fish. The River Dodder doesn’t open for fishing until March 17th, so twenty eight club members took to the hills to fish their Nolan Cup competition at Bohernabreena Reservoir, which opened on March 1st.

Regular contributors Piscarifly and The River Whispers both have their early season newsletters available, where Piscarifly focused on a cool day on Owel and The River Whispers looks back on some recent trips and prepares for the season ahead. Featured in the trout reports this week is Dorrie Gibbons, who will represent Ireland on the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association Senior Fly Fishing Team later this spring. Dorrie is only the 6th woman in the history of the ITFFA to have qualified to represent Ireland, so Maddy Kelly of the Irish Ladies Flyfishing Association tells us all about her.

In salmon angling, our only report comes from Lough Currane, where no more fish have been landed, despite the efforts of the lonesome boatman, among others…

Trout and salmon anglers who want to try fishing further afield from their local haunts can avail of a new opportunity to buy a day ticket on a different water, as onthewater.ie have added a few more clubs to their online permit shop. The website is now selling permits and membership for clubs on the River Slaney, Boyne and Kells Blackwater, Avonmore, Fane and Suir tributaries: the Anner and Clashawley.

Pike and perch have been fishing well this week, especially for Senan Stanley of Irish Fishing Tours. Senan landed one Derg pike to over 115cm on a recent visit, nearly 26lbs in old money, and on another trip landed four perch to over 40cm, as well as many more just under the magic 40cm mark. Senan wins our Catch of the Week this week for those cracking fish. On the Erne system, young angler Euan McKee followed up his first ever pike in November with a fine 4lb fish this week, caught on a sardine deadbait. Also north of the border in search of pike was Steve McDonagh of the Fishing with Steve YouTube channel; in this episode, Steve fishes a small lough near Downpatrick with great success.

In coarse angling, the usual prolific clubs were back in action. The CM Lakelands Club held concurrent matches in Leitrim and Monaghan, as Garadice and Muckno were the venues for their events. Members of the VDE Baggers had a small match at Ballenaleck Marina at the weekend, and they were delighted to find the fish active, compared to their recent trips to Lough Muckno. In Offaly, the Leinster Coarse Anglers held the seventh outing of their Leinster Open on the Grand Canal at Daingean last weekend, although it wasn’t one of their busiest days on the bank.

In saltwater, the Carrick Beach & Rockers SAC are back with a great shore angling report, this time from Waterfoot Beach, where they had a strong start, but a slow finish, to their event. In Kerry, Chris O’Sullivan, the Inshore Angler, is back on the sand once again; this time he is ray fishing, as early season is a great time to target rays from the beach.

Finally, Daire and Tom Doc from the Ireland on the Fly podcast speak with John Murphy from Salmon Watch Ireland. In this episode, John talks the guys through the finer points of section 19(a) of the Fisheries Act 1997, which allowed the continuation of salmon farming in Ireland without licence renewals that would require proper environmental examination. This section of the Act is in the process of being removed from legislation and it means that salmon farming organisations must reapply for licences for the first time in 18 years.

And now the weather…

Becoming mainly dry Friday night with clear spells developing by morning. Lows 7 to 9°C with a moderate southeast wind.

Sunny spells on Saturday morning will give way to patchy rain in the afternoon. Highs 12 to 15°C with moderate east to southeast winds. Mostly dry overnight as any rain clears northern coasts. Lows of 4 to 9°C in northeasterly breezes.

Dry across most areas on Sunday with sunshine and just light to moderate east to northeast winds. Highs of 12 to 16°C, highest away from eastern counties. Lows of 3 to 6°C overnight with light to moderate northerly winds.

Generally dry with sunny spells and some isolated showers on Monday and Tuesday.

Don’t forget to double check the forecast before heading off and if you’re going to sea, check the tides.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Ireland on the Fly – Salmon Watch Ireland & their plans against salmon farming in Ireland in 2025

The latest Ireland on the Fly Podcast is live, this from the hosts Daire and Tom Doc:

Spring is in the air and it feels like the season is finally starting to click into gear and for many salmon anglers you’ll be thinking of trips to book and plans to make.

But one of the big issues affecting wild salmon and sea trout numbers is the presence of salmon farms in some of the most pristine locations around our Atlantic coast.

The issue of salmon farming is something Tom & Daire continually cover on their podcast and for this week’s episode they catch up with John Murphy from Salmon Watch Ireland to find out about updated legislation that means salmon farms are having to renew their licences.

This also means it’s a time for action and opposition to these renewal applications and John Murphy tells us what can be done to counter the increasing threat of salmon farms to the environment and our wild fish.

Loughs trout season opens for Midland Angling

Mick Flanagan, of Midland Angling and Shooting, has been back in action on the midland loughs this week after opening day on March 1st. Mick fished Lene and Owel with his old pal, Marty, and both men did well on Lene, though Owel was a tougher nut to crack. The rainbows have been feeding hard on sticklebacks and fry in shallow water, so trolling small lures was the recipe for success and some good sized rainbows were hungry for them.

Mick reports that it was great to once again meet old friends on the lake shores, although some of those shores have completely changed their appearance with trees down from the recent storm.

Mick will be back on the loughs throughout the season and we’ll keep an eye on his catches. If you’d like to book a day with him, his contact details are below.

Garadice and Muckno matches for CM Lakelands

The CM Lakelands Feeder Club held two matches concurrently on Sunday on Lough Garadice and Lough Muckno – here is their report:

On Garadice, Charlie Richards put in a very impressive performance to win the match  with 6.110kg. His weight was made up of 11 skimmers and 40 plus smaller fish. Charlie’s Father, Nick, made it a 1and 2 for the Richards family with a 3.010kg weight, which included some nice skimmers. Under 25 feeder international, Brian Clarke came 3rd Overall with a mixed bag of small fish for 2.840kg. Section winners were Robertas Zilaitis 2.360kg and Irmantas with 1.810kg.

Over on Muckno, Niall McKitterick had a great day catching 80 fish to win the match on South Lodge with a weight of 5.225kg of roach, hybrids and the odd perch. Niall caught most of his fish at 40 meters. Alan Larkin finished 2nd overall fishing at 50 meters to catch nearly an all roach net for a weight of 4.175kg. Bruce Zhou was 3rd overall and he caught skimmers, hybrids and roach for a weight of 4.125kg.

Section winners were Neil Keane 3.575kg, Piotr Horbiński 3.425kg and Mariusz Killan with 2.900kg.

A special thanks to Charlie Richards for running the match on Garadice and Paul Leese and Darren Fairhurst for running the match on Muckno.

Daingean dashes hopes for Leinster coarse anglers

The Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation held the seventh outing of their Leinster Open on the Grand Canal at Daingean last weekend. It wasn’t one of their busiest days on the bank, as catches were relatively poor from both the Town section and Heffernan’s Lane.

In the end, it was Heffernan’s Lane that produced the marginally better fishing, with Colin Devoy taking 1.68kg for the win. Interestingly, the next three best weights were all 1.22kg on the nose, giving a three-way tie for second place.

Full results as follows:

Section ‘A’
Joint 1st…Sean Ward……1.22.
Joint 1st…Dean Murray…1.22
Section ‘B’
1st…Colin Oliver……………..1.680.
2nd..Aidan Devoy……………1.220.
Overall.

Joint 3rd. A. Devoy, S. Ward, D. Murray.

WATCH: Early season ray fishing in Kerry

Chris O’Sullivan, The Inshore Angler, is back on the beaches in Kerry. This time he is ray fishing. Early season is a great time to target rays from the beach, especially in calmer weather (haha!) and Chris shows us how it’s done. With explanations of the rigs used, his bait and how he presents it, and plenty of rod-bending action, it’s another great watch from this international angler.

Epic day of pike fishing on the Fishing with Steve channel!

In the latest episode of Fishing With Steve, host Steve McDonagh travels north to Ballydugan Lake in Downpatrick, County Down. Ballydugan is a former trout club fishery that is now managed as a day ticket water, with tickets available for £15 through Rob McMaster ([email protected]) and the Lakeside Inn on the lake shore.

It was a slow start to the day for Steve, but once things got going, it was non-stop action for the whole day, with multiple double takes. An action packed day with plenty of laughs and pike caught.

If you like Steve’s YouTube channel, don’t forget to like and subscribe!

Baggers back bagging up at Ballenaleck

Ten members of the VDE Baggers had a small match at Ballenaleck Marina at the weekend, and they were delighted to find the fish active compared to their recent trips to Lough Muckno. There were some decent weights recorded, and it was a familiar face at the top of the leaderboard, as Aaron Nabc Hutchman, fresh from his recent league win, made the best weight of 7.4kg. Not far behind was Carolan King on 7.2kg.

They plan to open out their competitions over the coming months to allow non-club members to fish a match as a guest and then decide whether to join up to fish additional matches. This is a great way for anglers new to the club/match scene to test the water.

First outing of the year for Dodder Anglers

Last Sunday, 28 members of the Dodder Anglers headed to the foothills of the Dublin Mountains to fish their Nolan Cup competition at Bohernabreena Reservoir. The competition has been running since 1962, and it helps to get the anglers limbered up for the start of the season on the river, which opens on St. Patrick’s Day. Gary Foley was the champion angler on the day and Fran Nugent came in second. I bet they can’t wait till the 17th now…

Young Euan back on the banks of Lough Erne

Some of you may recall an article from our November reports highlighting eight-year-old Euan McKee from Carnlough in County Antrim and his first-ever pike. Well, he’s been at it again, this time dead-baiting a sardine from the shore of Upper Lough Erne in order to hook up this fine little pike of about four pounds. 👏👏👏👏

Hopefully, he’ll be back at it again before too long.
