Heron's annual migration for bass in Cork Harbour

Sue with one of her daily bass

Last year Sue and Vin Heron from Lincolnshire visited Cork Harbour for bass and mixed angling and booked local guide Richie Ryan. Having never before returned to the same fishing grounds for a second time, the couple decided to break with tradition and fish from Cobh again this year as they had enjoyed the experience so much. In particular the bass fishing exceeded their expectations.

The couple booked Richie for 6 days, one of which had to be cancelled due to bad weather. The guide was delighted that Sue and Vin caught bass each day he was with them. In fact on the last day Sue out fished Vin by catching four bass to Vin’s two. In addition they experienced the thrill of pollack on the fly which they thoroughly enjoyed.
They have vowed to return for two weeks next year which is great news for Cobh and Richie.

Too much wind or too little, still salmon and sea trout about on Currane

Yingchun Dong and salmon
Ms. Yingchun Dong of Dalian/Dayuqua China, caught a 7 lbs. Salmon, a 2.5lb sea trout and 4 junior sea trout

Vincent Appleby gives a round up of the fishing on Lough Currane where anglers have had some good salmon and sea trout fishing in the last week despite the odd windy day…

28/8/14 Come Lunch time Lough Currane was neigh on at a standstill with a strong SW blowing down the lake but this didn’t deter Mr. Dick Elder, manipulating his flies and it wasn’t long before he caught himself a fine Salmon and his gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddyof www.fishingwithdom.com reported to me that Mr. Dick Elder finished his day off with 2 Trout. Now to www.fishingwithdom.comevening shift or as he put it in Extra time, Miles from the UK, caught 2 Salmon on the fly and finished his evening with 2 Trout. Wind as already stated with heavy showers throughout the day.

sea trout juniors
Laurence and Lukas
May it be the first of many visits to Ireland

29/8/14 Lough Currane saw some good action in the Sea trout department. We start at the Bungalow and the trolling department, two young German Anglers, Master Lukas and Laurence  Muller, had their first taste of Game fishing when they caught 3 Sea trout ranging from Junior class up to 1 ¾ lbs. While fishing with their Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Now to the fly department, Mr. Declan McKibben, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 3 Trout on the drift and in Neil’s and Tom’s hired out boat department, the Co Mayo Westport Salmon and Sea Trout Blogers were in magnificent form in the fly department with 12 Sea Trout ranging from Junior Class up to 2 ½ lbs. Now we head down the North Shore, Mr. Andy Wishart and Mr. Gavin Wishart of Northern Ireland, caught 5 Trout on the fly, while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy ofwww.fishingwithdom.com Now we head across to the South Side and the hired out Boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. John Delap caught 4 Sea Trout on the drift and also in good form with the fly, was Mr. Bill Bullock with 6 Sea Trout, ranging from Junior class up to 2 ½ lbs. Staying with the Sea Trout, Mr. Mark Dorman caught 8 Sea Trout ranging from Junior Class up to 2 ½ lbs. While fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley. Wind NW then veered W fresh to strong and overcast with heavy showers.

Yingchun Dong and salmon
Ms. Yingchun Dong of Dalian/Dayuqua China, caught a 7 lbs. Salmon, a 2.5lb sea trout and 4 junior sea trout

30/8/14 Straight to the action and a bit of history in the making I believe and for good reason, Ms. Yingchun Dong of Dalian/Dayuqua China, caught a fine 7 lbs. Salmon on the troll and went a step further by showing her fly fishing skills in C&R department and it wasn’t long before Yingchun, caught herself a fine 2 ½ lbs Sea Trout and finished her day with 4 Juniors and in the words of her Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com  all I did was net and admired. Now to the total Sea Trout fly department, Mr. Mark Doorman was in excellent form again with 9 Sea Trout, ranging from Junior Class up to 3 lbs. While fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley. Mr. Andy Wishart and Mr. Gavin Wishart, caught 2 Trout on the drift, while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddyof www.fishingwithdom.com Mayo may have lost the Gaelic football semi final today against the Kingdom of Kerry but at least the Co Mayo Westport Salmon and Sea Trout Blogers were in magnificent form again in the fly department with 10 Sea Trout ranging from Junior Class up to 3 ½ lbs. Wind NW light with reasonable cloud cover.

31/8/14 Local Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.comreported that his clients caught 2 Trout and that it was hard going with a strong SW wind blowing up the lake, so on that note we will head upstream to the world  famous Butler Pool, where there were 2 Salmon taken on the fly. Now for the Sea Trout catch of the day and to get all the facts we head to the upper lakes and Lough Cloonaghlin, where Mr. Sean Brick of Tralee caught 6 Sea trout ranging from Junior class up to 4 ½ lbs. All caught on the fly, while fishing with hisGillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com

1/9/14 Lough Currane was on the quiet side and for good reason, my Noble Anglers were in a lethargic mood as they looked at the flat calm conditions and when the wind did get up it came from the North and as soon as they went for their drift the wind died down again as did their spirits, so they headed for the nearest bar, need I say more.

2/9/14 Lough Currane may have been lacking wind If you forgive the pun!! but when it did get up my Noble Anglers made the most of it and the hired out boat department of Waterville Boats and atwatervilleboats@gmail.com take the head lines with Marc’s Fishing Party from Belgium Catching 15 Sea Trout of which 11 were of the C&R department and 7 of which were in the 2 lbs. class and the rest were in the Junior class and as Marc would say, fly only. Staying with Sea Trout fly department, Mr. Phil Staniforth, caught 5 Trout to his rod, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy ofwww.fishingwithdom.com Now we cut across the Valley to the River Inny, there was 1 Grilse caught by an angler on his own. Wind SW light to calm all day and overcast with the sun breaking through at times.

3/9/14 Straight to Marc’s fishing party from Belgium, they started their day on the Famous Butler Pool, saw a few nice fish but sadly no rod benders, so they headed for Waterville Boats and atwatervilleboats@gmail.comthen went out on Lough Currane and it wasn’t long before the action started and here are their catches, they caught 13 Sea Trout on the drift ranging from Junior class up to 3 lbs. Staying in the Sea Trout department, Mr. Enrico Fantasia of Dublin also had a good day with his fly rod, with 9 Sea Trout, 1 in the 5 lbs. class, 2 in the 3 lbs. class and the rest were in the junior Class and his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com said they rose a good few more. Last but not least a guest fishing with hisGillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.comcaught 9 trout. Wind was all over the place, so you can make your choice, with reasonable cloud cover.

That is your ration for the week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Juniors love the NCFFI Angling Championship 2014

Garadice always evokes memories. My mind drifts back to that catch of two good bronzed bream and two golden shiny rudd, taken from Haughton’s Shore, way back in 1969, on my impressionable young youthful days. It was with hope of similar positive and lasting impressions being made, that almost 50 youngsters, boys and girls, with tired but excited faces, gathered to partake in the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland, Junior All Ireland event, hosted by the Lakeland Angling Club of Ballinamore on Saturday, August 30th.

Competitors from as far as Wexford, gathered in the Ballinamore Scout Den, for the all important draw and morning refreshments served by Hamill’s, on a soft drizzly morning. The event catered for all angling abilities, with sections for novices, u14 and u18. Talk was. Of which baits to employ, what methods to apply and what species to target. Mums, dads, grandparents and club organizers provided transport, knowledge and encouraging support.

Novices were located on the less demanding Haughton’s Shore and degrees of parental assistance were encouraged to assist competitors as young as 8. The more independent and able u14’s and u18’s, set up their stalls or stages on the windier Church Shore, to fire out feeders or waggle wagglers. All were eager to compete for the sponsored prizes provided by Senses, Trabuco, Tubertini and Southside Angling Center of Dublin. Free portions of bait, provided by Irish Angling Services packed by Gabriel Owens/The Forge, to encourage the fish to gather and feast. Tackle used, ranged from 6ft beginner rods, to the latest space station seat boxes and fluorocarbon lines. For some, the opportunity to partake and possibly catch a fish, was enough, for others, the search to become the champion was paramount. The Novice section saw one young lady, dancing along the gravel bank shouting, “I’ve caught a fish!”, but, then being worried about touching it! The more proficient reeled in roach and hybrids at a speedy rate, starting to fill their keepnets! One competitor had forgotten his wellies, so he rolled up his jeans and paddled barefoot. Three hours of cries of delight, less complimentary comments, where fish lost or missed, and parental encouragement or consultation quickly flew by.
The weigh in, to establish who had caught the greatest weight of fish, competitors, parents, grandparents and spectators gathered to view the results of the telltale scales. Friendly banter and congratulations were the order of the day! The wonderful day was rounded off with a delightful sausage and chips and formal presentations at Smyth’s Pub in Ballinamore.

Compliments of

David Swann, Lakelands Angling Club, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim

Anglers brave the heavy rains at Galway shore master angler series

Galway Buccaneers SAC reports:

Congratulations to Conor Mountaine on winning leg 4 of our shore master angler series, its Conor’s 3 win in a row in what was a high scoring match. The weather on Sunday started off with a fresh SW wind turning WSW in the late afternoon, this surprisingly only had a gentle surf lapping the beach which was free of weed. For the first couple of hours the rain was torrential, and driving out through Connemara on route to the venue you couldn’t see any of the mountains. The rain however didn’t deter the fish in anyway who were feeding hard, a good sign the beach is recovering after the storms earlier in the year. Thankfully halfway through the match the rain cleared and we ended up with blue skies and sunshine.

First casts produced fish along the beach, Conor Mountaine peg 8 had a Brill to start off while Fergus Collins peg 7 had a Turbot. Elsewhere there were Flounder and Turbot coming in for John Peel peg 6 , Rob King peg 3 and Denis Healy peg 5. Norbert Zimmerer peg 4 and Duncan Brown peg 1 were finding the going tough, it was great to see Duncan back on the beach after a lengthy enforced break.

Fishing was busy with the top 3 all in double figures. Fergus Collins finished in 3rd place with 11 fish giving him a points tally of 213 he was just pipped to second place by 1 point by Denis Healy who had 10 fish giving him a total of 214 with several of his fish marking in the 20’s. Conor Mountaine who pulled a treble shot out last cast to consolidate his lead finished with 17 fish and a points total of 331.  Thanks to all who braved the initial heavy rains and came out to fish see you all at the next one. Full result to follow ~ The Committee

Species caught Flounder, Turbot, Brill and Lesser Weaver
