One apiece for the Westport trio off Finlough

David McEvoy reports from Delphi:

14/06/2014: Today Saturday we are seeing glimpses of the fine summer weather appearing as we approach the longest day of the year. Temperatures are beginning to creep up and if the fishing slows down as I sincerely hope it doesn’t, the scenery will always be magnificent.

Having said that we had a relatively good week with fifteen fish landed, despite some difficult conditions and the midges making their mark.

First on the score sheet last Sunday was Chris Dickinson who landed a lovely sea liced fish of 9lbs11.5ozs off the Whin pool on a Sunrae Shadow.

Delphi - June 14th 2014 (1)Monday we drew a blank and on Tuesday the old Maestro himself John Mills was on the mark again with a sea liced fish of 7lbs6ozs off the Turn pool on a Delphi Collie.

On Wednesday Mike Shortt saved the day with a sea liced fish of 5lbs on a Corps nymph from the Turn pool.

Thursday was a bit of a deluge as regards fish as we landed seven. Chris Dickinson had his second of the week, a fish of 7lbs 13ozs off Fin on a Sunrae Shadow. The dynamic duo of John Mills and Alan Dunlop had one each off Finlough, of 8lbs11ozs and 8lbs3ozs on a Collie Dog and a Willie Gunn respectively. David Hewetson Brown had a sea liced fish of 6lbs 3ozs from the Rock pool on a Willie Gunn. Jean Howman had one from the Deadman’s of 4lbs on a Teal Blue and Silver. Not to be outdone by his brother Mark Shortt had a fish from the Stream on Fin of 6lbs on an Allie Shrimp. Finally Chris Cromey Hawke also had a fish from the Stream on Fin of approx. 5lbs on a Delphi Collie.

Delphi - June 14th 2014 (2)Friday Mark Shortt got one up on his brother Mike when he landed his second fish of the week, a 4lbs 8oz fish from the Quarry pool on an Allie Shrimp.

So far today we have had four fish. Peter Joyce had one from the Rock pool of 3lbs 4ozs on a Red Shrimp. The Westport trio of Sean Moogan, Tom Callanan and David Duffy managed three in a boat off Finlough of 8lbs 6ozs, 9lbs 4ozs and 10lbs on a Cascade, a Conehead Flamethrower and a Willie Gunn respectively.

This afternoon the sun has broken through and temperatures have risen dramatically, so our new group of anglers this week will have to pull out all the stops if the weather forecast is proven correct.

Irish Angling Update 12/06/14

A golden beauty. Photo compliments of guide Jason O'Riordan, Game Fishing Ireland

The past week has seen a lot of rain and warm conditions pass over most of the countryside for most of the week and this brought a lot of anglers out on all waters.  This week’s update has a lot of angling stories from all waters but salmon fishing is dominating most the stories this week.

It was a good week on the River Bandon where there were some good salmon reported during the week.  It was another productive week for anglers fishing on Lough Currane where salmon to 17 lb. and some nice sea trout were reported.  There were some nice salmon reported from the River Laune also.  Down on the Dingle peninsula, more sea trout were reported from the Owenmore Fishery with the fishing getting better every day.  Low water conditions impacted on salmon fishing at the Galway Weir but good numbers of grilse are now moving in with every tide. The first few grilse of the season was reported from the Kylemore Fishery in Connemara on stretches of the river. Over in Delphi eleven anglers landed 13 salmon in a few days in the past week.  There was good salmon fishing reported from the Owenduff River on the Rock House beats.  There was 260 salmon reported from all the fisheries on the River Moy in the past week.  Sandeel was the favourite bait to lure sea trout on the Moy Estuary in the past week.  Angling catches for salmon increased considerably with 152 salmon reported on the Ballisodare Fishery.  A fine 10 lb. salmon was landed by young Arran Long on the River Bonet. Stephen Brennan had an enjoyable day’s fishing on the Owenmore River in North West Mayo where he caught and released a fine fresh salmon.  The grilse run is in full swing on the River Drowes and anglers enjoyed the fishing.  Unfortunately the salmon fishing on Lough Melvin was not great and up on the Owenea River, water levels were low all week with no fish reported.

Prebaiting worked well for Dominic
Superb catch by Dominic Backer wins him our ‘Catch of the week’

Peter Doherty won the 2014 Irish Trout Fly Fishing Associations (ITFFA) National Rivers Trout Championship which was held last weekend on the River Liffey and the fishing was excellent for all competitors. Sunshine and downpours didn’t dampen the spirits of the multinational anglers on the Suir fishing with Andrew Ryan. Angling guide Mick Flanagan reported that trout fishing on many venues in the midlands was excellent with good catches of trout from many waters in and around the Mullingar area.  There were still some Mayfly hatching on Lough Sheelin in the past week but most trout were taken on the good spent gnat fishing in the evenings in the past week.   The Mayfly season is over on the western loughs but some anglers are catching some nice trout fishing caenis imitations flies.  Trout fishing slowed down on Lough Conn and Cullin but nonetheless some good trout were reported in the past week. Trout up to 42 cms were recorded at the very successful “Lough Fern Classic” Catch & Release Trout Angling competition last weekend. 50 anglers from all over Ireland fished over the two days with a prize fund of €2000 up for grabs and the fishing was excellent.  Angling guide Jason O’Riordan reported that the rainbow trout fishing on Carrigavantry was excellent in the past week for himself and a client.  Jason also reported on some excellent brown trout river fishing nearby landing some big trout in the clearer water conditions.  In Co. Kilkenny at the Adaire springs fishery produced some quality brown and rainbow trout fishing for anglers in the past week.

Angling guide Peadar O’Brien guided a Belgium visitor to catch some nice double figured pike on Lough Muckno recently. A total of 17 enthusiastic contestants from the Fishmaniak Club took part in a weekend competition on the River Erne at Belturbet and managed to catch 58 pike all together. Angling guide Barry Darby from Mullingar had several clients out pike fishing on Lough Ree and the fishing was superb with many good fish taken on lures and returned.  Over in Claremorris, 14-year old Harvey landed 5 good double figure pike while fishing with angling guide Kenny Sloan.

There was a good range of species reported by anglers deep sea fishing out from Malahide in the past week.  The first specimen smoothound of the season was landed with skipper Kit Dunne deep sea fishing out from Wicklow where there was some fine Bullhuss landed.  Steven Brennan reported on some fine Stingray fishing from the shore in Kerry.  A party of five Sligo anglers had a great day’s deep sea fishing with skipper Donal Kennedy fishing out from Killala. Deep sea fishing has improved for anglers fishing with charter skipper Michael McVeigh at Downings in North Donegal where they are catching a great range of species.  A fine specimen 44.03 lb. tope was recorded at the Lough Swilly International Tope and Whitefish Festival.

Senior and junior members of Carrickmacross Anglers took part in a cross border coarse and trout competitions over the weekend fished at venues on both sides of the border and they all enjoyed some lovely fishing. Stanley Martin, Wigan won the annual Edenderry Festival on the Grand Canal in a keenly contested event. The two angling festivals down on Inniscarra Lake in Co. Cork produced some wonderful fishing for the anglers from the UK and Ireland.

It was a good week for a Grandfather and Grandson having a fishing holiday at Melview Lodge, Longford where they enjoyed some superb catches of bream, tench, hybrids and roach on a variety of local waters. The grandson Dominic Backer from Yorkshire had superb catch of tench and bream and wins our Catch of the Week.

The weather is getting warmer and the hotter as predicted in the days to come and fishing on inland waters will probably get a little harder.  Sea anglers should benefit most from hot dry weather and a trip to sea should produce some good fishing,

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Paul Bourke

A plenty supply of coalfish in Donegal wrecks

Karel with double Dabs
Karel with double Dabs

Rosguill skipper Michael McVeigh reports:

Fishing at first week in June is pretty much normal. Mackeral are patchy – as expected start June. Reef Pollack better than this past number of years. Limeburner fishing fair, with an unexpected number of Haddock. Sand as usual – good & bad days.  Tope good.  No reports of Porbeagles. Wrecks absolutely full of Coalfish – not really fishing wrecks due to this problem. Few Spurdogs around, including one of the photos below.

Predator Team Ireland attend World Championships in Bulgaria

The newly formed NCFFI Predator Club recently spent 5 days in Asenovgrad, Bulgaria, representing Ireland at the FIPSed XII CArnivorous Artificial Bait Shore Angling World Championships.
Over the two days of the competition the team members Tomi Kurman, Jacek Gorny, Colin Rutherford, David Dennis and Lindsay McFadden caught 80 fish between them to secure 15th place overall. Fishing alongside the world’s best anglers in Lure fishing we didn’t think we did do so bad for a first attempt!

It was a fantastic learning experience that was thoroughly enjoyed by all, especially when all the teams shared tips & tactics after the event itself. Lot’s to bring home with us and work on for next year!

We would like to thank our sponsors Main Irish Angling, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Bumble Lures, Candy Plastics, who with the support from the NCFFI helped us to make this trip happen.

Next event is World Championships Boat Angling with Lures to be held in France this October. Please note this WILL NOT clash with the Lough Erne World Pike Classic. We will be holding qualifiers for this event on Lough Erne, Co.Fermamnagh over two weekends 21/22 June and 2/3 August and invite anyone interested to attend. For more details please visit our Facebook page NCFFI Predator Club or call 07548895643(Lindsay).

Some nice salmon reported from the West Cork Salmon Rivers

EILEEN CARROLL MURPHY from the Inland Fisheries Ireland office in Macroom reports on salmon fishing in the Cork Kerry area.

FOR WEEK ENDED SUNDAY 8THOF JUNE 2014

LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3

Angling Report 9th June (Email to Laune Angling Report)

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

As of Monday 9th June water at a beautiful 2 feet 8 inches on the gauge at Johnston’s.

Fish of the week goes to Tom Curtayne from Killorglin who landed a beauty of 14 lb. on the fly at Gorry on the 1st of June.  Eileen Richards fishing along with her husband Clive has opened her Laune account already with a lovely fish of 7 lb. at the Rock Pool on Wednesday evening.  Clive is fishless again so far this year apart from an encounter two weeks ago with the fish of his career which he lost after 15 mins.  Patrick Richard had a salmon of 11 lb. three two pound sea trout and for the Laune a remarkable brown trout on Beat 3 of 3 lb.  Patrick’s friend Denis Lacroix visiting from France lost a few sea trout but has yet to land a salmon.  This writer had a lovely 2 lb. sea trout on a single handed rod during the week at the Rock Pool which was great.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters right now cost only €25 per day.

Beat 3:

This is perfect water for salmon fly fishing on Beat 3.  There are a few salmon holding up in pools down river from Beaufort Bridge and a good few sea trout also and in these conditions may be easier to tempt.

There were three fish reported from the beat for the week.

There is also a very good evening rise of brown trout on the beat.

For Beat 3 Permit Costs click on: Beat 3 Permit Prices 2014

Prospects: The water is perfect and will fall to ideal during the week, there are fish running the river so prospects are as good as they get BUT will enough escape the draft nets to make good fishing for anglers?  We will know this time next week.

Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25
