Casting for salmon on the River Drowes

Lindsey Clarke from the Ballyshannon office reports on the River Drowes for the week ending 25 May…

Water levels were better this week on the Drowes and the fishing reflected this with good numbers of salmon caught.

On Monday John McGill had a very good day recording 7 grilse caught weighing from 4 to 7lb with 4 of these released again. The fish were all caught spinning from Briney’s to the Crooked Hole.

On Tuesday, Chris McDaid recorded a 4½lb grilse caught on a Mepp’s from Spa Well.

Not many salmon reported on the Lee but the odd good fish to be had

On the River Lee there were 15 salmon landed for week ending 25 May. The fish averaged 8lbs each, mostly landed by local anglers using all methods.

RIVER LEE ESB FISHERY

Paul Hanley had to use stealth to catch his salmon on the ESB fishery on Monday. The beats were seeing a lot of pressure from anglers and despite the number of coloured fish throwing he managed to spot a fine fresh fish. On his thrid cast the fish took his size 15 Ally’s Shrimp and led him a merry dance before he could hand and the then safely release the salmon. An early start pays off for Graham

South East Angling Services Gerard Doran gets out early so his customer can enjoy all on offer.  Ger reports:

Graham booked in for a Guided day last Sunday with Sea Trout the chosen species.

Gerard Doran - Sea fishingThe early morning start ensured fishing took place over the preferred tidal situation for a local estuary. Conditions for the previous week were very mixed which made it a little more difficult but we remained confident of catching a few fish.

Gerard Doran - Graham 1Starting off using medium rated lure rods and metals retrieved fast It only took perhaps twenty minutes for Graham to land his first trout of the day, a small one but a welcome start.

Gerard Doran - Shore fishingDuring the day we covered a large volume of water to provide the best opportunity of catching fish. Graham a dedicated angler fished hard to land five fish for the day also dropping a few as often happens when sea trout fishing.

A very enjoyable day was had.

20.5lb salmon caught on the Laune, but river quiet otherwise

Billy Downes reports on the salmon fishing on the River Laune for the week ending 26 May…

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

One great fish for John Hussey this week from the Laune.  A beauty of 20.5lbs caught on Sunday at Johnston’s High bank on a Black Flying ‘C’.

Unfortunately this was the only fish I heard of for the past week.  Water level and clarity is ideal at just under 2 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s.  The only factor that went against good fishing was the low temperature of air and water.  Apart from the John’s great fish, the fishing would have to be described at very poor.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters right now cost only €25 per day.

Beat 3:

Perfect water on Beat 3 no fish reported for the week.

For Beat 3 Permit Costs click on: Beat 3 Permit Prices 2014

Prospects:

Not looking good even allowing for the draft nets being in operation,  the return to anglers for this past week was poor despite a reasonable angling effort.

Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25

150lb of bream at Dromore

The Dromore system is reported to be giving good bags of fish especially Bream with one angler bagging 150lb of Bream during the course of one day.

Some good catches from Lough Arrow during mayfly flurries

Ryan had the best fish of the two days - 4lb 8oz

Fishing on Lough Arrow has been pretty good for the past week with most of the action taking place in the evenings. Anglers reported a good fall of spent and the buzzer fishing was also productive.

Bryan and Shane Kelly, both from Boyle, had a total of 24 trout for their week, most of which were returned.  The fish weighed up to 2 lbs. and were taken on dry green mayflies and spent mayfly patterns. Michael Kelly, Croghan, reported a very good evening’s fishing with 5 trout (3 released) up to 5 lbs. on a Lough Derg Spent.

Ryan Richardson and his father Stephen where down on Lough Arrow last week and had some great fishing. Between them the lucky anglers landed 15 trout for two days. The biggest  (shown in the picture) weighed in at a very respectable 4lb 8oz.

Arrow is one of the great Irish trout fishing loughs where the trout average 1½lb and fish to 6lb and 7lb are taken on fly annually. It is 4 miles north-west of Boyle, with Ballymote 6 miles and Ballyfarnan 3 miles away. It is a limestone lough, incredibly rich and, while it has some feeder streams, it is mainly spring-fed… Find out more, download a map

Large browns on Suir tributary in superb condition

Guide Jason O’Riordan of Game Fishing Ireland  reports:

While the larger rivers have been quite flooded of late, the smaller local streams have remained fishable. These are beautiful discreet little tributaries close to the towns of Dungarvan and Clonmel. While the wild trout tend to be small in size they provide very enjoyable and often challenging fishing.

Jason O'Riordan - Fishy looking waterOn these streams dry fly can be good on the slower water if trout are rising but typically one would fish with a dry dropper set up in the currents. In higher water a streamer can work really well.

Streamer Water

Over the weekend I had a few short sessions with John, who is an experienced lure angler but relatively new to fly fishing. John wanted to learn new techniques and improve his casting ability. When the water drops space can be tight so a good roll cast and side cast is really useful.

Demonstrating the “side arm cast”

On one Suir tributary we had several very large browns on the dry dropper in quick succession. These fish were in superb condition and one in particular was a real brute.

Releasing John’s brute

Unusually they did not seem very fussy and were willing to take either the dry with an untypical splashy rise, or the nymph. They were not as spooky as one would expect and we were able to sight fish them with beadhead pheasant tail nymphs with ease. Perhaps they were just ‘on the feed’ . . . . who knows for sure. In any event John had a great session and can’t wait to return for another go.

No problem with Mackeral – once we found them! Loads of Coalfish, Yuk. Good enough reef Pollack, Gurnards, Dabs, Plaice. All in all a reasonable start to the season. No Turbot on the usual spot – hope this is just a one of and not a repeat of last year?
