Wicklow Boat Charter’s skipper Kit Dunne reports on a cracking weeks fishing in and around breaks in the weather, after some bad winds we had a few breaks.

The Irish World Boat Team arrived to Wicklow for practise in hard tides and deep water recently, looking for 35Metre depth and a strong tide we set hook in a hole in Wicklow Bay. The southerly winds hampered play a bit but didn’t stop Pat Swan a local Team member who landed a Specimen Spurdog of 16.4lb .

Getting it right....
Getting it right….

Meanwhile a week later after a bit of an Easterly blow things settled again, in more favourable tides we set out for our favourite animal grounds. Smooth-hounds had arrived in numbers, they were small but getting closer to that illusive 6.6lb specimen weight. Bull-Huss appeared in numbers over both days with some to 13lb, while Thornback Rays made an appearance also. The best Thornback to date has been approximately 8.5lb, small by comparison to recent years but its early yet !

With weather settled even more and a few eager crews waiting, we expect and hope for bigger Hounds and the appearance of Tope this week, watch this space.

Three wise men land the beauties on the Fane

Professional game angling guide Ronan Mac Grianna is  based in Co.Louth and shares his escapades with us through his blog Duán Fly Fishing. Ronan  was out and about recently and reports:

Ronan Mac Grianna - Fane Trout 1The trout fishing on the Fane has been excellent recently so my fishing buddy, James Casey decided it was about time he came down from Derry to give it a throw. Typically, the weather turned rough on the Saturday and on Sunday we were faced with a colouring, rising river. Anglers had been enjoying tremendous sport with the trout keyed into hawthorn flies. The best of the hawthorn fishing was now over but we encountered a super hatch of Olive Uprights. For some strange reason, however, the trout failed to rise to these delicate upwings. We did, however, come across some trout which were feeding heavily in prime feeding lies. My brother managed an excellent trout on a dry paradun while myself and James got a couple of beauties, team fishing to a couple of rising trout. Great fun!

A lovely trout for Darragh.

The end of May and June sees the cream of the fishing on the Fane. I usually manage my biggest trout of the year during the course of the next few weeks as the biggest trout key in on sedges. Fishing the hatches of small caddis flies, known locally as ‘Grey Flag’ can be absorbing and very tricky. The big trout often key in on the pupal stage of the fly and often hunt the swimming pupae just under the surface.

James looks pretty pleased with himself!

If we get warm weather, I won’t venture out before 8 o’ clock and often stay on the river till after midnight. Luckily the Fane flows from west to east so you’re often pitching your dry fly into the setting sun so visibility remains good till late on into the night. Spending a couple of hours in the lonely drumlin country of South Armagh/Monaghan as the night falls is a fantastic way to zone out after a busy days work.

Little salmon fishing on Melvin, none caught in last week

There were few rods fishing for salmon in the week ended 25 May according to Lindsey Clarke in our Ballyshannon Office. Subsequently there is little to report. The only occurrence worth mentioning is that one one rod hooked and lost a salmon trolling a Toby lure on Sunday. A quiet week for salmon angler here all in all.

Melvin trout anglers catch some on wets, Mayfly hatch should improve things

Lough Melvin remained fairly quiet this week once again, write Lindsey Clarke from the Ballyshannon office. With most rods away fishing Erne, Arrow &  Sheelin. There were a number of reports of some good trout fishing on the wet flies for those who ventured out after the same. The mayfly are starting to hatch and this will improve fishing.

No water or salmon at Owenea

Lindsey Clarke from the Ballyshannon office reports that the Owenea Fishery started  the week ending 25 May with reasonable water and the gauge reading 0.20 metres. However, as the week progressed there was little in the way of rainfall and the river steadily dropped. By Sunday, we had returned to very low levels with the gauge only registering 0.09 metres. The gauge average for the week was low reading only 0.14 metres. I have no news of any salmon caught to date. The forecast is for some rain next week and hopefully this will equate to some nice water levels.

Not many salmon reported on the Lee but the odd good fish to be had

On the River Lee there were 15 salmon landed for week ending 25 May. The fish averaged 8lbs each, mostly landed by local anglers using all methods.

RIVER LEE ESB FISHERY

Paul Hanley had to use stealth to catch his salmon on the ESB fishery on Monday. The beats were seeing a lot of pressure from anglers and despite the number of coloured fish throwing he managed to spot a fine fresh fish. On his thrid cast the fish took his size 15 Ally’s Shrimp and led him a merry dance before he could hand and the then safely release the salmon. An early start pays off for Graham

South East Angling Services Gerard Doran gets out early so his customer can enjoy all on offer.  Ger reports:

Graham booked in for a Guided day last Sunday with Sea Trout the chosen species.

Gerard Doran - Sea fishingThe early morning start ensured fishing took place over the preferred tidal situation for a local estuary. Conditions for the previous week were very mixed which made it a little more difficult but we remained confident of catching a few fish.

Gerard Doran - Graham 1Starting off using medium rated lure rods and metals retrieved fast It only took perhaps twenty minutes for Graham to land his first trout of the day, a small one but a welcome start.

Gerard Doran - Shore fishingDuring the day we covered a large volume of water to provide the best opportunity of catching fish. Graham a dedicated angler fished hard to land five fish for the day also dropping a few as often happens when sea trout fishing.

A very enjoyable day was had.

20.5lb salmon caught on the Laune, but river quiet otherwise

Billy Downes reports on the salmon fishing on the River Laune for the week ending 26 May…

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

One great fish for John Hussey this week from the Laune.  A beauty of 20.5lbs caught on Sunday at Johnston’s High bank on a Black Flying ‘C’.

Unfortunately this was the only fish I heard of for the past week.  Water level and clarity is ideal at just under 2 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s.  The only factor that went against good fishing was the low temperature of air and water.  Apart from the John’s great fish, the fishing would have to be described at very poor.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters right now cost only €25 per day.

Beat 3:

Perfect water on Beat 3 no fish reported for the week.

For Beat 3 Permit Costs click on: Beat 3 Permit Prices 2014

Prospects:

Not looking good even allowing for the draft nets being in operation,  the return to anglers for this past week was poor despite a reasonable angling effort.

Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25
