LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3

Angling Report 28th April (Email to Laune Angling Report)

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

As of Monday 28th April, glad to report that there were a few fish caught during the week.   The best fish of the week that I heard of goes to John Turner who got his season off to an early start with what was described as a ‘fine 12 lb fish’ at Johnston’s on the worm on Friday.  There were fish caught on Saturday on Beat 3 and at Paul Connors.  With fish last weekend as well could this be the start of fishing on the Laune?  With the lovely rise in water to over 1.3M at the Laune Bridge and rising, prospects for the coming week are good.

Angling effort has been low up to now but with it being late April and good water that will change.  News of Sea Trout is scarce so far.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters right now cost only €25 per day.

Beat 3: Water on Beat 3 is ideal right now and there is always a chance of a fish if you are out there.  Thomas Ward fished Beat 3 yesterday without getting a pull but as a compensation he witnessed for the first time the upstream migration of elvers at the Island Pool on Beat 3.  Tom said that there was a continuous two foot wide strip of elvers swimming up by the right bank for 1.5 hrs.

For beat 3 Permit Costs click on: Beat 3 Permit Prices 2014

Prospects: Good, there are always a few fish running the Laune especially in this water.

Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25 probably the best value in salmon fishing in the country with a good chance of a fish when the water is right.

RIVER LEE

Fish are beginning to arrive into the river.  12 salmon were landed for the week from the Dam all the ways down as far at the Kingsley.  Average weight 7 lb. each mostly landed either by spinning or on worms by local anglers.

 RIVER BANDON

Salmon are beginning to arrive into the river.  Water levels have risen and fishing is fair.  8 salmon were landed for the week from Desert Biridge down river 3 of these salmon were caught in the Innishannon area, average weight 10lbs, and a 12lbs salmon was landed on the Bandon anglers stretch.  Methods used fly and spinning.

RIVER ILEN

5 fish landed for the week, best 8 lb. by a syndicate member on a Flying C.

GLENGARRIFF RIVER

1 fish of 7 lb. landed by a local angler on a Flying C.

Cathal Hughes wins the four day Easter Festival on Lough Muckno at Casteblayney.

Dick Caplice, chairman of IADA reports on the four day Easter Festival on Lough Muckno at Castleblayney in Co. Monaghan.

29 anglers fished the four day Easter Festival Match on Lough Muckno at Castleblayney.  The event was held on sections at White, Black and Yellow Islands.  Fishing was very good for the competitors which included four time World Champion Bob Nudd from the UK.  Roach were the dominant species with hybrids also featuring in catches which were mainly taken on long pole and feeder.  The match was keenly contested right up to the last day but World Pairs Champion Cathal Hughes from Galway won the fourth day with a nice catch of 14.600 Kilos to clinch the win and take home over €1500.  Cathal’s winning overall weight was 42.420 Kgs followed by J. Jowett with 39.970 Kgs. and R. O’Neill a close third with 39.330 Kgs.  Bob Nudd finished 8th with 31.720 Kgs.  The fishing will improve further now with water temperatures rising in the coming weeks.

We’re improving your fishing chances – want to help?

Great fishing is about the prospect of lots of quality fish while spending time enjoying the outdoors. Quality fish come from healthy populations enjoying good water, plenty of food and access to habitat. When we have dams, denuded riverbanks, culverts, dredged gravel beds and poor water quality we don’t have healthy fish and we certainly don’t have great fishing experiences.

That is why Inland Fisheries Ireland is working to improve fish habitats. It’s a simple equation: the more quality fish habitat, the more quality fishing you will be able to enjoy.

Improving fish habitats involves all of us and we need your help. To improve what we do, we would like to know more about you, what you know and what you think about habitat.

We are taking part in an international survey with counterparts in the USA, UK and Australia. The survey should take no more than 5 minutes and is available by clicking here.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FishersandHabitat

All the information is anonymous and not related to your email address. We are pleased to offer prizes:

  1. €300 tackle voucher
  2. 10 IFI measuring mats
  3. 10 copies of Brown Trout in Ireland
  4. 10 copies of Channels and Challenges

There’s a link at the end of the survey that takes you a separate, unlinked page where you can enter the draw for these great prizes.

Thanks for helping making our fishing better!

“Captain Binley” wins ITFFA Youths National Championship

winner
Ryan Binley is pictured receiving the Jimmy Allard Cup from ITFFA Youths Officer Frank Dempsey.

Congratulations go to Ryan Binley of Foxford Angling Club who won the Jimmy Allard Cup at the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association (ITFFA) Youths National Championship. Twenty two anglers, representing fifteen clubs, competed in this event and whilst fishing conditions were very difficult with strong and blustery east winds and occasional showers Lough Owel did not disappoint with some fabulous trout being caught and released to the water unharmed.

Ryan, who is no stranger to the trout angling scene having captained the 2013 International Team, caught eleven trout measuring 420cm on a variety fry patterns. Second place went to Cavan angler Jack Egan (Lough Sheelin) who landed eight trout for 313cm, and third place went to Belfast angler Ian Dalzell (Straid Angling Club) with 3 trout for 115cm. The prize for the largest trout went to Almha McDonnell of Dublin Trout Anglers who landed a whopping fish of 50cm which would have well exceeded the 4lb mark.

This result is testament to the great trout angling that Lough Owel consistently provides. This is a fantastic venue and is a must for visiting anglers who should try fishing shallow water with a team of wet flies comprising of some fry type patterns. The olives are also beginning to make an appearance on Owel and there is bound to be some great top of the water action.

Fly angling for trout is a sport for all regardless of age or gender. If you are less than eighteen years of age and are interested in participating in the sport, you can contact the ITFFA Youth Officer, Mr Frank Dempsey on 087 235 1830.

Juvenile Angler wins Boat at ITFFA Youths Fundraising Competition

winner
Boat winner Dylan Ennis receiving his boat from ITFFA Youths Officer, Frank Dempsey.

Congratulations go to Dylan Ennis on winning a 19’ McA boat in the Irish Trout Fly fishing Associations (ITFFA) youths fundraising competition, which was held at Lough Owel on 27th April 2014. Seventeen year old Dylan, who is from Moate in County Westmeath, was always going to be a hot favourite having represented Ireland at juvenile level on numerous occasions.

winner
Boat winner Dylan Ennis receiving his boat from ITFFA Youths Officer, Frank Dempsey.

With a 19’ boat, an electric engine and many other fantastic prizes up for grabs this competition attracted eighty two anglers and raised much needed funds for juvenile anglers. Angling conditions were only fair with a moderate easterly wind and a lot of extremely bright sunshine. Dylan and his partner, Sean Dempsey, concentrated on the “kettle” area of the lake and managed to boat in excess of 25 trout between them. Dylan also boated the heaviest fish which weighed 1.54 kg, but because he finished in the top three he was precluded from claiming the prize for the heaviest trout, which went to Liam McKnight with his trout of 1.27 kg.

As usual Lough Owel lived up to her reputation as a great brown trout fishery and  produced hundreds of fish, most of which were returned to the water unharmed. This is a fantastic venue and is a must for visiting anglers who should try fishing shallow water with a team of wet flies comprising of some fry type patterns. The olives are also beginning to make an appearance on Owel and there is bound to be some great top of the water action.

Other Results were as follows:-

1st Dylan Ennis (Juvenile Angler) 3.230 kg               9th Stuart Marry 2.260 kg

2nd Paddy Ward 3.130 kg                                         10th Sean Dempsey 2.235kg

3rd Mark Dunne 2.270 kg                                            11th Cathal Rush 2.180 kg

4th Jimmy Cahill 2.520 kg                                           12th Chris Butler 2.155 kg

5th Liam McKnight 2.460 kg                                      13th Chris Meadows 2.075 kg

6th Ciaran Reilly 2.440 kg                                           14th Owen Dunne 2.045 kg

Good pike and the odd trout on troll for anglers on Ree

Michael Flanagan reports on the angling at Lough Ree…

The Devaney Lads are reeling in some super trout and pike from Lough Ree. Dara and Shaun had a few days on Ree last week and had super fishing.

Dara boated a lovely looking pike weighing an impressive 22lbs, and Shaun had a beautiful colored Trout of 7lbs.

I hope to spend a bit more time on Ree this coming May fly season, as there is the chance of catching a fish of a life time on this lake.

Wicklow producing April thornbacks and a few early smoothhounds

pup
John O Connor shows off another Smooth-Hound, a 2013 pup I guess.

Wicklow Boat Charter’s skipper Kit Dunne reports on a great April Day out with good signs for the coming season…

The forecast was looking bad for Saturday and Sunday so Kit invited a couple of friends for a sneak preview last Friday before the weather turned for the weekend.

pup
John O Connor shows off another Smooth-Hound, a 2013 pup I guess.

It was always a chance day out but the signs were good, 2 weeks previous we had Ray in the shelter of Wicklow Bay so we set out further South this time. Accompanied by 2 avid anglers, Paddy Keogh and John O Connor we set out for a mark South of Wicklow Head.

smooth hound
Kit with his first Smooth-Hound of 2014

We had a plan, I was to target Smooth-hound, John was on Ray and Paddy was trying for a mixed bag. It wasn’t long before the scent trail began to work and I landed the first Hound for the Lisin in 2014. A sigh of relief could be heard as far as Bray, the fish were in !

ray
Paddy shows off his fine Thornback Ray.

It was a little further into the day as the tide slackened when the first Thornback Ray showed up, Paddy was delighted with his fine fish and had another tale to tell on his very popular website, Irelandfishingdiaries.com

ray
Ray No.1. for John O Connor, he set out to get his first Ray, and landed 3.

John was still chasing that Ray, his first Thornback was the target.

As tide slackened he threw on some colour, a bit of bling, a mixture of Mackerel, squid and Herring and low and behold, he lands a nice 6-7lb Ray. Not happy with just one John fished hard and managed to bag

3 Ray for his day, an outright success.

ray
Ray No.3. for John, now he really got the hang of it !

All in all we had a very successful day, 5 Ray were caught and a few hounds, not bad for an April day with the water still a bit murky.

Looking forward to another session and a great season, please God !
