Surprise Yourself by Going Off the Beaten Track

Some of the Fish Taken During Today's Session in Cavan

Taking my own advice, I went in search of a new venue somewhere small and not often or heavily fished and looking at the map I located a number of small lakes in the Bailieboro area of Co Cavan. I have fished the Castle, Town, Drumkeery and Skeagh lakes before but I was looking for a blank canvas, somewhere new. The lake outside of Bailieboro was small, reasonably good access but only one or two naturally occuring swims. If I could get a few fish from this unfamiliar water I would be more than happy.

It was a mild enough day, around 10 degrees and overcast but with a strong squally breeze. I decided to fish feeder 45cm hook length down to .10mm, with a size 14 hook. I was fishing about thirty turns into 10ft of water. After about 10 feeders full of black groundbait, the feeder settled and bites started almost straight away. Not what I was expecting though, a nice rudd about 6ozs was the first fish of the day. Rudd are an extremely handsome fish and lovely to catch on float. Next fish was another small rudd and then all changed. I thought that I was getting into better fish but as the fish got nearer I could see the striped flank of a nice sized perch. With the mouth open and the dorsal raised these fish always seem to be heavier than they actually are. When the bites slowed and I upped the bait to 4 red maggots and this kept the fish coming.

The majority of fish for the session were perch with an occasional rudd. On one occasion I struck into what felt like a better fish that broke me off before it could be netted. What it was, a hybrid or something else I thought I would never know. As it turned out later in the session I hooked what I thought was a better fish and discovered that it was a wild brown trout. I landed the fish and unhooked it only to discover my line from the break off was traling from its mouth. The rogue hook was removed and the fish photographed and released unharmed back to the lake.

A most enjoyable session produced a nice net of fish, some of which were photographed prior to release. I am looking forward to my next outing which I am sure will be to a location less visited.

Declan Cooke reports from the beautiful Moy:

The first salmon from the river Moy for the 2014 season was caught yesterday (13/3/’14) in Ballina the “Salmon Capital of Ireland”.  It weighed in at 7lbs 12oz and was caught by local angler Val Mitchell using the time honoured “plug of worms” on the Ballina Salmon Anglers Association water, just upstream from the weir.

The first Moy salmon is usually caught during the month of February but water levels on the Moy had been extremely high and angling has only been possible over the last few days as flood waters receded. There is now a palpable buzz of excitement amongst the angling community around the towns of Ballina and Foxford as conditions on the river continue to improve and the season has finally kicked-off. Angling prospects on the Moy remain excellent for the coming weeks.

Irish Angling Update – 13/03/14

Some good flies for Lough Sheelin

The fine dry weather at the start of March has certainly brought a lot of anglers out fishing and now that the trout season is in full swing, there is plenty of fishing to be enjoyed all around Ireland.  In comparison to last spring, this spring in March has ensured good fishing all around but there is still high water levels on some rivers and loughs but they are dropping every day in the present nice spell of weather.

8 lb 11oz trout is our Catch of the Week and is among many good trout catches on a cold Lough Sheelin
8 lb 11oz trout is our Catch of the Week and is among many good trout catches on a cold Lough Sheelin

Down on Lough Currane there some nice salmon fishing reported including a fine 11 lb. fish for an American visitor.  Conditions on the Blackwater Lodge fishery on the Cork Blackwater are bringing better fishing and several salmon were taken in recent days.  The dropping water levels are helping the salmon fishing at Delphi in Co. Mayo with the occasional fish reported. The River Drowes produced ten salmon for the week and although there was a good run for fish into Lough Melvin there was none reported to the rod in the past seven days.

Out at sea anglers fishing with charter skipper Hamish Currie enjoyed good conger and spurdog fishing in the cooler but calm conditions in the last few days.  The Galway SAC held a celebration for Conor McDermott a junior sea angler who finished in the places for the Irish Home Junior team.

Father and son team Timmy and Philip Cunningham caught some fine trout up to 7 lb. from Lough Ree.  A few trout were also reported be moving on Lough Owel where more anglers are fishing in the nice weather this past week.  Well known chef Kevin Dundon was out fishing on Lough Lene with angling guide and journalist Mick Flanagan and caught some lovely which he then cooked for a fabulous lunch at the lake shore. Angling tackle dealer and guide Pat Cleere reports good river fishing on the River Liffey near Clane where there were good hatches of dark olives and midges and fish were rising to them.  Angling guide Jason O’Riordan ran a successful course at the rainbow trout fishery at Ardaire and his pupils certainly enjoyed the course and caught many fish on the day.  On Lough Sheelin, Gary McKiernan of Lough Sheelin Guiding Services caught impressive trout of 68 cm, tipping the scales at 8 lb. 11 oz., on a glister Ollie and this is our Catch of the Week.  This was one of many good trout reported from the fishery where sunk fly lines and big flies brought success to the hardy anglers out fishing in the past week.  The cool dry weather did not put off anglers fishing at Carrigavantry last week with good trout fishing reported.  The Courtlough Winter league in north Co. Dublin continued last weekend with good catches of Rainbow Trout reported.

Pike angling was a little slower last week with loughs in Co. Monaghan fishing well for anglers using soft plastics baits and Jerk baits.  Some French anglers fishing with angling guide Kevin Lyons had good sport on loughs in the Longford area.

Small loughs in the Monaghan area are producing some excellent roach fishing at present. In the same county junior anglers fishing a competition at Lough Muckno had some excellent catches including bream, roach and hybrids last weekend.

In this week’s update, there are many other angling stories, clippings and club announcements and you can access all these through the angling update on the website.  Prospects for fishing in the coming weekend look excellent and I expect more anglers out fishing on inland waters and at sea.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Paul Bourke

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has confirmed that it is investigating a pollution incident in Newtowncashel.

However an IFI spokesperson outlined that no further information was available at this time .

On Monday Longford County Council stated that the “effluent discharge in the Elfeet area of Newtowncashel” was currently under surveillance in consultation with IFI, and that it had “reduced significantly in volume”.

“The Council is monitoring the effect of any pollution on surface and ground waters, and on drinking water sources,” a spokesperson for the local authority added…..

Sun at last in the sunny Southeast and Ger is ready to fish !

Sunshine at last and South East Angling Services Gerard Doran is well prepared and ready to go. He reports:

Time has been spent preparing rods, reels, lines, lures and just about everything recently in anticipation for warmer more settled weather to arrive. Sea trout and mullet will be the main target species in saltwater for the moment until species like Bass and Gilthead bream arrive inshore in reasonable numbers.

This week the weather finally took a turn for the better and provided a good chance to get out fishing productively. Many locations have changed greatly over the winter unfolding exciting new opportunities to discover in more detail. It was these areas that have produced some sea trout this week using hard lures, all released after a quick photo. Small suspending minnows, sinking pencils and metals too from companies such as Smith, IMA, Lucky Craft and Hansen all prove effective, more on those at a later stage.

Ger Doran - Sea Trout March 2014After such poor weather in early 2014 you really appreciate being out and about again taking photos, observing wildlife, spotting the early signs of marine activity and of course catching some fish! The next few tidal sets will see larger numbers of sea trout and mullet enter shallow bays, tidal rips and estuary’s. Lets hope the weather is favourable for the year ahead.

Saltwater trout fishing is often challenging but fantastic sport. Many visiting anglers choose to visit later in the year for the Bass but in my opinion the Irish sea trout fishery is not to be ignored either. Unlike the Bass fishery which is focused mostly in south, the sea trout fishery is good throughout much of the Irish coast.

Ger Doran - Sea Trout March 2014 (2)Bookings for Sea Trout fishing Workshops & Guided days are available over optimum tidal sequences. Many districts are currently open for fishing with Wexford/Waterford districts opening Monday 17th March. Locations remain flexible to meet your needs.
