Brown trout to 7lb for father and son team on Lough Ree

Lough Ree is producing some good early season trout…

Athlone Anglers Philip Cunningham and his dad Timmy are reeling in some good trout from Lough Ree. On their most recent angling  adventure it was Timmy that came up trumps and netted a super brown trout of 7lbs on the troll.

Lough Ree will produce a few more cracking fish in the coming weeks and might be worth checking out over the break for St. Patrick weekend.

Also taking place in April is the I.T.F.F.A. Youths fundraiser with top prize a new 19ft Kingfisher boat. This takes place on 27th April. More on these events in the coming weeks.

Kevin Dundon cooks up a fish supper on Lough Lene

Caoimhe also had some lovely trout on the Lake

Michael Flanagan invited Kevin Dundon down for a days fishing last week and they had a cracking day on Lene…

Kevin was joined by Caoimhe Young Editor of the Sunday World magazine and her dad Brendan. As we loaded up I had told some fellow Anglers to drop back into Fagan’s Point for 1-30pm as its not two often us poor Anglers have their own personal Chef.

Mike Flanagan and Kevin Dundon got amongst the trout on Lough Lene

I was under a bit of pressure to catch the dinner, but we had some cracking Trout up on 3lbs in the Morning session and the Kevin lad was in the thick of the action.

Now it was time to see how Kevin was under pressure in the kitchen, and he came out on Top by serving 13 hungry anglers with a mouth-watering trout lunch.

Caoimhe and her dad Brendan also caught a few lovely fish, and I am sure we will see Kevin and the Sunday World team back in the Midlands this coming summer all going well.

Cork is harbouring ambitious plans for the future – Irish Examiner

Irish Examiner - Cork Harbour
Irish Examiner - Cork Harbour

A TIDE is turning for Cork’s harbour, and for the better. After decades of neglect, and dirty industry, then thousands of job losses in heavy industries such as Irish Steel, IFI and Verolme, it’s cleaning up its act, finally.

There’s a surge of people enjoying its waterways, wildlife, walks and linkages, and amenities. It’s being reclaimed by its residents, and offered up to visitors.

To replace many of those harbour jobs lost in the 1980s and 1990s, there is up to €200m in development projects (plus a planned €80m relocation of Port of Cork to Ringaskiddy) in the next few years. The harbour is poised to take on a more democratic, embracing role in the life of Cork’s residents and to play an increasing role in Irish tourism, via cruise ships, waterfront walks, cycle-ways and multi-faceted visitor attractions in Spike Island, Camden Fort, Haulbowline and Cobh, along with investment in marine transport, safety training, and maritime and energy research…..

A 6ft shark from the Great White family has washed up on a Kerry beach. The female porbeagle shark was discovered by local photographer Bernard Fitzgerald at the weekend as he was walking on the Aughacasla beach in Castlegregory.

The arrival of the adult shark in Tralee Bay comes as a tagged Great White shark called Lydia is set to be the first recorded member of her species to cross the Atlantic as she swims within 750 miles (1,200km) of our shores.

Marine biologist Kevin Flannery said the porbeagle shark does bear a close resemblance to the sharks made famous by the Jaws movie….

Monaghan pike make it a day to remember

Steven Powell's Monaghan Pike
Steven Powell's Monaghan Pike

Pike angler Steven Powell had a fishing trip to remember when he caught this super pike in Monaghan.  Steven tells us: “A nice Monaghan pike just before they started to spawn  on a jerkbaitmania custom reaper spinner blade , just weighed a tad over 13lb , one of 8 lure caught pike on a single fishing trip. one to remember for sure , weather had been poor with lots of rain and high water levels but sticking tight to shore lines and a lot of roving made it all worth while indeed.”

Blazing saddles and flat calm as the american catches his 11lb salmon on Currane

Mr. Donagh McCarthy of the USA and Waterville
Mr. Donagh McCarthy of the USA and Waterville

Ghillie/Guide Vincent Appleby reports from a calm and sunny Currane:

07/03/2014: Straight to the action and the trolling department, first in the striking zone was local gillie Mr. Eric Jouen of Waterville Boats and of [email protected] who caught a fine 10 lbs Salmon, next in the striking zone was local Gillie Mr. Mike O’Dwyer, who caught a fine 11.½  lbs Salmon on the troll. Now for today’s weather chart, wind NNW light with bright sunshine and you can say without any fear of contradiction there weren’t any wet arse’s just red faces for those who didn’t catch my Noble Salmon. On an updating point of view there is a lot to be said for Wi-Fi Just for the record there was 21.7 mm of rainfall yesterday.

08/03/2014: Lough Currane was at a standstill and not surprising with a strong SW wind blowing down the lake, as you can see by the Bay view of Ballinskelligs Bay. At least my Noble Anglers had an excuse to head for the local watering hole to watch Ireland in the Rugby on the big Screen and see the end of a career? of a great player i.e. Brian O’Driscoll with a world record 140 caps, it will be interesting to see if any body can cap that.

Ballinskelligs Bay
Ballinskelligs Bay

09/03/2014: It was a calm day in all departments.

10/03/2014: Some fine weather at last, with blazing sunshine and calm all day, and yes you have it my noble anglers failed miserably in their duties in all departments.

11/03/2014: They say that you have no chance of catching my Noble gentlemen when its blazing saddles and flat calm, well my Noble Anglers you can put that one to rest, because Mr. Donagh McCarthy of the USA and Waterville, caught a fine 11 lbs Salmon on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com  and as you can see by the pictures, Donagh’s Dog was claiming his stake in Procuring the old gentlemen and that takes us to comment of the day, which goes to Mr. Tony Conlon of Waterville, when Tony was having his pint he saw the photo on the Lobster back bar board, he said “now dogs can catch Salmon on Waterville Lake“. weather as already stated.

Smaller Waters May Provide Good Angling Opportunities

Many Smaller Lakes Contain Good Stocks of Small Pristine Fish Like This.

Tackling big waters can be quite daunting especially if you have never fished them before. That is why some of the smaller waters offer the better chance of a few fish especially when fishing with younger members of the family. Smiths lake in Castleblayney is one such water and although it can be weedy in summer and swims are limited a few fish can be taken early in the year on feeder. The lake had depths from 2m to 10m and contains lots of small fish. There are a few banks of weed in the lake which are not visible in the early season so make sure you locate them before settling on your swim. For a few hours fishing it can provide a bit of sport. Les Harris in Lakeside Angling in Castleblayney can provide up to date information on all of the local waters.

Some early hatches of Olives and Midges on the Liffey

Fly fishing on the Liffey
Fly fishing on the Liffey

Pat Cleere reports on his weekend’s forays to the Liffey where there change in weather saw the beginnings of a hatch of fly…
Early days on the River Liffey, fly hatches sparse, as I saw only 2 large dark olives on the river around Clane on Sunday 9th March. There was a small sprinkling of Black Midges around noon with the odd fish rising to them. The best chance of catching a fish is on a bead head nymph or streamers.

Fly fishing on the Liffey

With the release of water from Golden Falls reduced now, there will be a window of opportunity to fish some part of the day.
Check liffeyreleases.com for time of water releases.

There is a substantial increase in temperatures this week, fly life should improve and we should see the first big hatches of large dark olives any day soon.
