Breaking news: Great springers on the Slaney as floodfalls

Kevin Clayton has time for a quick photo before returning his salmon

David Dobbs of the Slaney River Trust reports that the river is doing very well now that the weekend’s floods are fining off. Although there is still not sign of his boat that was washed away by the high water, some big fish have been caught and released.

Kevin Clayton had a fabulous 17lb salmon on a black and yellow tube fly. The fish was a genuine bar of silver fresh from the sea with lice still on.

David Dobbs had for his troubles a lovely fish of 14 or 15lb on a Cascade Copper Tube earlier today (27/03).

And only moments ago Dalton Tice and Kevin Clayton had a fine 7lb salmon – again a very fresh fish with sea lice.

Paddy Syme had a lovely fish of about 8lb yesterday on just his third cast.

There were a few fish taken before the floods last week…

Last Wednesday Teddy Sinnot was fishing further down river and had a salmon of about 11lb. John Carroll had landed one and lost three others on the same day.

Rory Harkin and Michael Noland both had good fishing last Thursday when both had salmon of about 11lb. It was Michael’s first salmon on fly on the Slaney.

A few salmon on the Moy, but cold keeps anglers away

Despite the very cold weather the Moy system produced a few salmon during the past week including a nice 9lbs. fish for Noel Maloney. Noel caught his spring salmon fishing the worm on the Ballina Salmon Anglers’ water.

However, angling effort is still low and it is hoped that the coming long Easter weekend will see more anglers venturing out than in previous weeks.

Two more for the Slaney as things quieten down

Slaney River Report for week ended Sunday 24th March

Following the excitement of the opening day activity on the river slowed down with few rods out in the early part of the week – we heard of 2 more fish landed – the massive flood on Thursday and Friday has meant that the river has been out of order since then.

Missing Boat

A boat belong to the Clohamon fishery was washed away in the flood when its mooring post was torn out of the ground. If anyone finds a 10ft white fiberglass boat could they please contact David Dobbs on 087 9673111

Eamonn Goes Scouting for Trout

A Beautiful Wild Brown Trout from a Cavan Stream

Angling Guide and Instructor Eamonn Conway reports that he fished on a number of small streams in the Cavan area over the past week or two. Eamonn had lots of trout to the net on his visits to the area but the trout were small in size with the average measuring around eight to ten inches. It has been very cold of late and not much in the way of fly haches but Eamonn who is an expert nymph fisherman managed to land good numbers of trout on this technique. All trout were returned unharmed to the rivers after a quick photo. Eamonn reckons that the fishing should pick up when the weather improves and we get out of the current cold snap.

Emy and District Anglers News and Spring Trout Stocking

Emy and District Anglers PRO Enda Fields reports on the activity on the lake ths week. Fishing update:- Due to the recent cold spell, fishing conditions have been challenging, with only a few brave souls venturing out. Shore fishing is very difficult, presently, due to the high water level so any fishing is confined to boat. Co Louth angler Mick McShane netted a lovely fish recntly on his silver dabbler variant tying. Hopefully things will warm up by the end of the month and into April and the lake levels are dropped enough to fish the shoreline. Tight lines!

Trout Stocking: – Many thanks to Leo Mc Mahon and Jimmy Mc Kenna, for helping with our recent spring annual stocking programme.

Catch & Release: – To conserve trout stock, we encourage all members to practice catch & release on Emy.

RTÉ TEN’s Top Telly picks for Tuesday, March 26

Living the Wildlife, 7.00pm RTÉ One

Colin takes to the high seas in search of blue sharks off the coast of Cork. Setting out from Kinsale, he joins skipper Butch Roberts on an angling trip. Irish anglers now contribute to one of the largest tagging programmes anywhere in the world, catching and releasing sharks after fitting them with tags supplied by the Inland Fisheries Ireland and recording measurements for research purposes. This has been extremely useful in compiling a database of shark numbers and sizes off the coast of Ireland.

An abundance of Thornies for the kayakfisher in Galway

Master fisherman at work !

Sea kayaker Gary Robinson of kayakfishingblog.com found time out of a busy schedule to go fishing on the stunning north-west coastline of Galway. Gary has returned to college to undertake an Honours Degree course in Applied Freshwater and Marine Biology.  He tells us “After thirty plus years here in Ireland I figure that if I am not used to the weather by now then I never will be! As a kayak angler in Ireland, the wind is my only enemy.

With the water temperatures dropping to less than 10°C/50°F  I knew that most of the ‘clean’ species would have probably headed off to deeper water by now and the first hour or so saw some very consistent sport from the Thornies”

Gary used a small sandeel bait which saw a couple of bigger Thornies in quick succession.  One of these up to 10lbs/4.5kgs.  An abundance of Thornies were available and it was only the fact that Gary was running short of bait that persuaded him to head for the shore where he met some shore anglers who weren’t as lucky with their day!

Dodder clean up postponed to April 6 due to floods

Unfortunately Dodder Day had be postponed due to heavy flooding in Dublin. The Dodder Action Group have set a new date of Saturday the 6th of April.

——————————–

Dodder Action group is inviting anglers and anyone else who shares their concern for the Dodder River to take part in Dodder Day on the 6th of April.

“We will have canoes, kayaks, and anglers in the water. Scouts and sports teams working the banks and parks. And with a generous donation from Churchtown Business Association we have hired a mini dumper helping to collect rubbish and bring it collection points.

All details are on our Facebook page.
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dodder-Action/262894190451698

This has been a great opportunity to build a network of community groups and interested residents which we can all build on and hopefully the next Dodder Day will more than just cleaning the river.”
