Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters was helping the next generation of anglers find their sea legs recently. The Wicklow Bay SAC has been running a series of youth coaching sessions, and they held the final one on Kit’s boat. 12 young anglers fished hard on a bad day, but were rewarded for their perseverance by some nice catches including mackerel, ballan wrasse, pollock, bass, codling, whiting and dogs. Well done to all the young anglers, and we hope to hear more about your catches over the coming years 👏👏👏👏

Earlier in the week, Kit was back on the tope trail, and he managed to hook up the Nolan brothers with a few fine tope, best weighing in at circa 44lb.

The Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation held the latest round of their Leinster Open on Annaghierin Lake over the weekend. While they had a smallish turnout, the fishing didn’t disappoint, and anglers on the high pegs had some great bags, with Tommy Dowd just pipping Dean Murray to the top spot with 15.82.
The Monasterevin & Fishertown Match Anglers held a 2-day pairs festival last weekend. It was a split venue match, with day one taking place on the canal at Daingean, while day two was held at Monasterevin. Fishing was tough enough, and the unsettled weather didn’t help either. However, at the end of the match, two of the top three teams from 2023 were also in the top three for 2024. This year, Nicky Harrison & Bob Hulme claimed first prize, with last year’s winners Conor Browne and Richie Keegan coming in second place this time round.

IASCaire Feeder Fishing Club celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the club’s existence with an Anniversary Charity Event 2024 on Lough Garadice, which was a huge success!
The club decided to try and raise money for a good cause and they extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who generously contributed to the charity match in aid of the Children’s Health Foundation at Temple Street.
Despite the challenging weather conditions, especially on Deeps and Haughtons, some of the dedicated anglers managed to reel in impressive weights, while others found the fish elusive.

Brian Mohally tells us that after completing their Bronze Gaia assessment, four junior members of Mallow Trout Anglers (Will, Jamie, Callum & Josh) had a day out to put into practice what they had learned over the last few months.

They headed to Adare springs in Kilkenny, where they all had a great day out. Special thanks to Ned for his hospitality. Each one of them managed to catch a trout in tough conditions.

The world class BLUE team – consisting of Brenton Sweeney, Charlie Richards, Steven Whyte, James O’Doherty and Piotr Horbinski – also qualify for a place at the World Championships of 2025, which will be held in Serbia.
Nytro Fishing Ireland team members Rory Dunne, Tommy Dowd, Dara Finnegan, Joe Nolan and Richard Pratt led the way after day one, 10 points ahead of CM Lakelands Feeder Club BLUE team, but day two of the championship saw section wins for Charlie Richards, James O’Doherty and Steven Whyte pushing the CM Lakelands BLUE team to finish with a fantastic total of 19 posts.
Runners-up Nytro Fishing Ireland finished in second place with 22pts and have the chance to be Ireland’s second team at the World Championship in Serbia next year.

The five teams representing four clubs from across the provinces met in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim to fish local venues on Lough Allen and the River Shannon.
Finishing first in section on both days Rory Dunne was first individual with 16.930kg. In second place was Charlie Richards with 14.700 and Robertas Zilaitis with 13.425.

At an entry fee of only €150 per boat, this event offers not only the safest but also the most enjoyable competition of the year.
Seven year old Senan O’Reilly from Tullamore featured on our reports pages recently, as he finally managed to land a pike after a number of unsuccessful attempts! After landing that first pike, Senan has the fishing bug and he has been showing his dad how it’s done ever since. He was out on Derg again over the weekend, but this time he was showing his mum, Dolores, how to how to catch them – and there was great excitement when both mum and son hooked up at the same time!
No doubts we’ll be seeing more from Senan in the future, we just hope his mum and dad can keep up with him!!
Summer holidays are coming to a close. Schools are back next week and the summer is kicking and gasping its way into autumn. Temperatures are down a degree for the time of year and it has certainly felt cooler in the evenings. There has been some really wild weather, particularly this week, but as most charter boat skippers will attest, it’s been a very windy few months. Rain has come and gone but in the last week it hammered down. Connacht, west Ulster and the far southwest saw rainfall accumulations between 149% and 240% of average. It was wettest in the northwest with 505.8mm (!) recorded at Knock Airport, Co. Mayo. Meanwhile the east and south east are positively parched, just 6.5mm fell in Dublin and some rivers down that side of the country are running low…
We’ll open the angling reports with the important news that the Ballysadare system has reopened. Salmon fishing is allowed on catch and release basis only while trout, coarse and pike fishing will resume as normal.
Some great coarse fishing was reported from Longford. It was family fishing fun at Melview Lodge last weekend with everyone getting in on the action catching hybrids, roach and tench. Meanwhile a group of Belgian anglers, also staying at the lodge fished hard and had some great catches of rudd and mixed bream and hybrids. In county Cork the BSI Sensas Ireland team won the World Championships Float Club Qualifiers fished at Inniscarra on Sunday. It was a very closely fought competition with just one point between the top three teams.

Jordan Stevens wins Catch of the Week for this lovely fly caught pollack
Cork Harbour saw some fine fly fishing for pollack and bass for a number of anglers, including our Catch of the Week winner Jordan Stevens who caught a pollack that looks to be almost as big as himself. Staying in Cork Harbour, Tom Johnson won the Munster Closed Boat competition coming first in a field of 27 anglers on a day where some great fishing was had and even black bream featured in catches. Next we stop in the Shannon Estuary where charter boats found refuge while the Atlantic Ocean did its thing. Anglers made do and fish like tope and sting rays were added to the species list. Over different ground a mix of ling, gurnards, haddock and more were landed. Further north in Donegal, Killybegs Mariner Aaron Vambeck scored a new club record boat caught Tope of 151cm. Killybegs Fishing Trips reported tough fishing in tough conditions, but there were still some decent pollack and ling accounted for. Over to the east coast now where the Greystones Tope Festival was held at the weekend.Tthe fishing was tough going but Rob McClean won with a good tope of 167cm. In an interesting side story, visiting Welsh angler Mike Stewart managed to catch two tope that had been tagged as part of IFI’s Marine Sportfish Tagging Programme.
Finally, good luck to the young Irish anglers competing in the 23rd FIPS-Mer World Boat Championships for U21 anglers which kicks off this weekend at Rathmullan. They’ll be competing against teams from Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Spain and Germany.

Saturday will start off dry in many areas with sunny spells. Showers in the west will gradually spread eastwards and will become widespread in the afternoon, some heavy. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17°C with moderate to fresh, gusty westerly winds. Sunday will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain, which may become heavy at times in north Connacht and Ulster. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18°C with mostly moderate south to southwest breezes.
Monday will be mainly dry with bright or sunny spells becoming wet in the evening. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18°C with light to moderate southerly winds increasing fresh to strong near coasts later. The rest of next week will continue unsettled with rain or showers at times, if little warmer.
