Kids are the Stars of the Week at Carrickmacross Coarse Angling & Junior Development Club, Angling Summer Camps

Organisers and Participants at the Carrickmacross CAC Angling Summer Camps at Lisanisk Lake

Kieran Roche PRO of Carrickmacross Coarse Angling Club reports that the picturesque setting at Lisanisk Lake in Carrickmacross has been the centre of some very intense Angling Tuition for juniors, beginners and novice anglers for the last two weeks. The success of the events have highlighted a need for an alternative sport for those who may not be interested in playing other, more traditional, team sports. The stars of the week were undoubtedly the kids. They listened eagerly to their pre-fishing talks and then applied the theory of what they had learned with precision; the number of fish caught bears testament to their successful application of their leaning.
One young angler Ryan Crosby caught a whopping 147 fish for his week. A big well done to Ryan and to all of the other participants on their success!
All the anglers received certificates from the organisers on completion of their week’s tuition.
A big thank you must go to Inland Fisheries Ireland for their Sponsorship, to Liam Murray and Gerry Callan, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Development Creevy, Carrickmacross and to Brook Cottage Angling. Professional Angling Coaching was delivered by Geoff Quinn and his son James Quinn (also a Junior Angler).
Grateful thanks is also due to the members of Carrickmacross Coarse Angling and Junior Development Club who gave of their time and expertise. The future of angling looks very bright indeed due to the sterling efforts of all concerned.

Anglers travelled from Sligo ,Connamara, Castlebar,Athlone, Kildare, and Donegal to contest with the locals For the Michael Malone perpetual Cup with the added attraction of several of the Irish Ladies team plus a big increase of anglers in the junior category also adding to the occasion.  Angling conditions were dark cloudy skies with a blustery south wind blowing. Most areas of the lake fished well as evidenced by the distribution of the boats on the day and most wet fly patterns worked well in the excellent wave that was on the water with fish visibly taking perch fry. Successful patterns included silver dabblers, gold dabblers clarets, sedges, and daddies. In total (28) Anglers caught 84 Trout with a rod average of 3 fish per angler with some super fish in both weight and quality.

Dermot Broughan reports on the Midlands Lakes and River Inny

Midland Lakes and River Inny Report by Dermot Broughan

We are now into the 7th week of very wet weather.  All the fresh water slowed angling on all lakes.

Lough Ennell:

Things have finally started to hot up on Ennell with good fish showing across the lake.  Toss Grimes took a fish on the troll over 4lbs.  On a Peter on a sinking line Noel Gilholley took a fish on the 4lb mark, and missed a number of fish.  Kenny Kiernan also had a good week on the lake, with a fish on the fly to 5¼lbs on Thursday night, and a fish 4lbs on Sunday night.

Lough Glore:

Angling on Glore has been slow this week.

Lough Owel:

Once again angling has been slow on the lake.  Emmet Stagg TD was back on the lake during the week with 4 fish the best 2½lbs.  Ken Mc Carty Dublin also had a good week with 8 fish the best 2½lbs.  Seven were retuned.  The Loran Bros Dublin had 10 fish on the fly, and all were returned. Peter Mc Glynn and Liam Cox, Kildare landed 3 fish which were all returned.

Lough Derravaragh:

There are no reports of fish been caught on Derravaragh this week.

Ballinafid Lake:

Foreign anglers on the lake during the week reported very slow returns with small perch and hybrids showing.

Royal Canal:

Angling has been very slow again this week on the canal.

River Inny:

There were a number of patrols of the Inny over the week and no anglers were seen fishing the river.  Water levels remain very high.

Bigger size Pollack are taking shads hard when on the feed in the Shannon Estuary

Shannon Estuary Fishing Report by Ray Byrne

Fishing in the Shannon Estuary is about par with last week with a good mix of fish about. The Tope are still showing in the estuary and with one young group I had 3 anglers who each had their first Tope in a short 1 hour session! As if to prove their luck I was on the same mark a couple of days later for a much longer session with a group of far more experienced anglers and out of 9 good runs just landed 3!! In fairness the Tope seemed very nervous that day and were also rolling a lot more than seemed normal. At least 2 good fish that were well hooked seemed to roll up the trace and part the line.

At sea the main change has been the lack of Mackerel close to the land. At the moment it is hard to get any inside a mile of the shore. However there are plenty of them just outside that and we have had a couple of sessions with fine Pollack raiding just under the shoals and providing a great surprise when you are geared up for Mackerel.

Indeed I am convinced that on suitable gear a Pollack approaching double figures, feeding hard in mid water is by far the best sport in these waters. Some of my Dutch visitors who fish a lot on mid channel Bass at home would be of the same opinion. This week the Pollack do seem to be of a bigger size and taking shads hard when on the feed.

At anchor we are still getting some fine Bullhuss and some Congers. On a nice day fishing in 60mtrs this is a lovely fishing with a mixture of mixed whitefish coming to the boat as well.

Great day at the Waterford Bass Festival

Neil Driver from Greystones, Co. Wicklow sent us this report from the Waterford Bass Festival:

Myself and my 14 year old son Cian fished the Bass festival in Waterford. Fishing was tough but with careful planning and timings and location change we managed to catch and release 10 bass between us. All fish were caught using surface lures in less than 3 feet of water. The highlight of the weekend for us was a 7lbs fish caught in crystal water in the bright sun shine.

Here are some of the photos taken by Cian…..
