The glistening of a golden trout on the river Suir

The glistening of gold
The glistening of gold

Last saturday Clonanav Fly Fishing held one of their improvers course at Clonanav. They had 4 in attendance and a great day was had by all. The weather was cold and windy, but Andrew tells us they had some fantastic fishing using both nymphs and dry flies.  The PTN flashback was again the most productive fly!

They caught a very nice fish close to 3lbs at Knocklofty bridge on the Suir, which was of course released again to fight another day.

'Fishy' characters target vehicles at prime angling locations – Garda warning after spate of break-ins – Connaught Telegraph

ANGLERS are the latest outdoor enthusiasts to be caught up in a crime wave, which is sweeping rural areas.
Cars, 4x4s and other vehicles parked at prime salmon and trout locations such as Lough Conn and the Moy System in north Mayo and Loughs Mask, Carra and Corrib further south have been targeted in recent weeks.
Amongst the items stolen by the smash and grab raiders are sat nav systems, car radios, handbags and other valuables.
Ballina based Superintendent Pat McHugh said at the weekend there had been a number of break ins to vehicles in the Lahardane area in recent weeks.

Roach gone amiss at Shrule Bridge on Inny

Canal Roach
Canal Roach

20/05/12 The Roach at Shrule Bridge were there for a few days and were gone again, there were still the odd ones hanging under the bridge but the shoals have departed suggesting either a very short run this year or that the main body of fish have yet to make their way upstream.

Peter, Derek and Chris were down at Shrule Bridge yesterday only to find the Roach very hard to get, they picked up about 12 between them and despite them being decent sizes of between 12oz and 1.5lb it was hard work, at least the Peacock caterpillers were out in force on the nettles.

Peter was gone by 1pm and Derek and Chris gave up about 3pm and headed to the Canal, where they fished with some success managing a Tench and some Roach one of which was a good size.

Hard fighting, full-finned rainbow trout on wet olives and mayfly patters in North Tipperary

Anglers may be interested to learn that the mayfly has just made its annual appearance on the pristine 16-acre put-and-take lake operated by Pat Stack in Ballinderry.

Anglers visiting the lake, known as the North Tipperary Angling Centre, are enjoying excellent top-of-the-water sport on the hard fighting and full-finned rainbow trout. Michael Herriott from Nenagh and his nephew had a good number of trout on wet olives and mayfly patters last week.  Paul Hegarty and his brother-in-law Liam from Dublin caught plenty of trout on F-flies and daddies.

Bobby Keyes from Ballywilliam, Nenagh,  and his boat partner Bobby McLoughlin had fish on mayfly nymphs while Peter Daly and his cousin Frank from Littleton had trout on small nymphs and lures, as well as a few on dry fly.

Pat Stack says lots of fish are moving on the surface at present. To book contact Pat on 087-2756775.

Hopes for a good end to the Mayfly season in Lough Derg

The improved weather conditions have sparked hopes by anglers on Lough Derg of a good end to the Mayfly season.

The highlight of the season on the Shannon’s largest lake is the spent gnat fishing but this has been hampered over the past few weeks due to cold conditions. In recent days the fishing is beginning to improve with warming weather enticing the gnat out of the trees and onto the lake.

Garrykennedy Fishing Club held the Kevin Reynolds Plate competition on Saturday last (May 19), the most likely winner of the plate at this stage being Shane Creamer who had a total of four trout with a best of 3lbs 1 ½ ozs. On the following day the club hosted the Christy Molamphy Cup competition. Eugene Willis and Padraig O’ Brien both had a fish each of exactly the same weight, 2lbs 4ozs to emerge tops in the event.

Meanwhile, one lucky angler from the Ballina (Tipperary) area landed a 10lb salmon on a dry fly at Castlelough (Lough Derg) on Thursday of last week.  He was fishing for trout at the time but still managed to boat the fish on relatively light tackle after a 15 minute battle. It’s the second salmon to be caught in that area of the lake in as many weeks.

Nice warm conditions made for good evening gnat fishing on Tuesday (May 22) when Peter Ahern had a best fish out of Garrykennedy – 3lbs 10ozs.  The same night Paudie O’ Brien had a fish of 3lbs 6ozs and his brother Gerry landed one of 2lbs 4ozs.

Close encounters of the otter kind – The Mayo News

It had been a year since I had seen an otter. Really seen one, I mean. I know where they live, where they hunt and where they like to eat. Retrospectively, I am surprised that an individual in possession of such knowledge has not stayed out late with the objective of watching them. It is not that I haven’t wanted to; life has a way of sweeping us along on a tide of inconsequence.
I had not gone fishing that night, I had merely taken my fly rod with me – after all, who would go to the lakeside unprepared? The inevitable happened; a trout poked its nose through the ripple to cast that cursed web and out-for-a-walk turned to sneaking along the bank. I knew the fish wasn’t big enough to eat, but I had to have it, to pull it from its home, to look at, to touch, like an unhungry cat with a view of a bird…..The Mayo News….23/05/12…..read the full article….

Local Louth man loses fishing appeal and is ordered to pay costs of Inland Fisheries Ireland – Dundalk Democrat

Inland Fisheries Ireland has won a circuit court case against a man from Co. Louth who appealed a district court case for illegal salmon fishing

The appeal was heard and Mr Smith was ordered to pay two fines totalling e600 and costs of e2,369 to Inland Fisheries Ireland at Dundalk Circuit Court on Friday, May 11 last.

The court heard that Mr Smith was found to be illegally fishing in September 2010.  Fisheries officers Thomas Duffy, Dermot Wynne and Ronan O’Brien from the Dundalk district apprehended him with a fixed net at the shores of Annagassan, which is the tidal section of the Dee and Glyde rivers, and initiated court proceedings……Dundalk Democrat……23/05/12…..read full article…..

A disappointing hunt for tope in Red Bay, but there's always next time!

Tope
Tope

Last week Hamish Currie went a wee tad south of red bay in their hunt for tope, no bull Huss were present or spur dogs but they did encounter a few small tope.  Nothing to get exited over but alas a really big tope was lost.  After a 10 minute scrap  she decided to throw the hook.  Ah well,  there is always the next time!   This week the Predator II will target them again to see if numbers have increased.
