North Tipperary Angling Centre rainbows fighting fit

Peter Gleeson took a break from pursuing brown trout on Lough Derg to reprt on this pristine 16-acre lake at Ballinderry, North Tipperary, is renowned for it full-finned, hard fighting rainbow trout.

There is some excellent top-of-the-water action on the lake at present, with anglers reporting catches of over-wintered fish in the 3lbs to 4lbs range.

Fish are not only coming to the dry fly, according to the proprietor Pat Stack. Anglers fishing with buzzers on fast sinking lines are also catching plenty of trout.

The over-wintered trout in the lake are as natural looking and as hard fighting as those found in the wild and feed only on what the lake’s eco-system has to offer.

Pat says the lake, located in a splendid pastoral setting, is  the perfect venue for anglers looking for a bit of action when the Mayfly season finishes, or indeed at any time. You can contact Pat on 087-2756775.

Derg trout on Gnats but not many spent on the lake

Peter Gleeson reports that trout angling on Lough Derg this Mayfly season has so far been an improvement on some  previous years, according to anglers.

Hatches of mayfly have been good despite the below average temperatures and fishers willing to spend a lot of time on the lake are getting reasonable catches.

One lucky angler had a trout of  over 6lbs while fishing in the Castlelough area on Wednesday May 9th and another had one of over 5lbs on the wulff at the back of Hare Island a few days earlier. Anglers are also heartened over the appearance of good stocks of small fish in some parts of the lake, as they had been noticeably absent in recent years.

The cold weather has so far ruled out good falls of spent gnat, but anglers are getting fish on these flies despite their noticeable absence. The view of most anglers on Derg is that trout far prefer the gnat to the green fly and will take it even when there are none to be seen.

Big specimen bream reported in big catches recorded in the Upper Shannon area.

Big specimen bream

Bryan Ward reports on a recent coarse fish report in the Mayo – Upper Shannon area.

Big specimen bream of 9 lb. 2 oz. from the Upper Shannon

Chris Ganley and Markus Kirwan both members of Ballyhaunis and district angling club, weighed in bags of specimen bream when fishing  one of the many islands on the upper Shannon over the weekend. They both managed to weigh in bags exceeding 150 lb. which were emptied several times due to the large fish they encountered. Their plan was to fish Saturday evening to Monday evening but with bad weather forecast for early Sunday morning they cut their visit short.  Prebaiting the swims  a couple of days prior to fishing them was the key and when the fish moved in after 3 to 4 hours of setting up they were held for 3 hours  at a time and were all averaging 8 lb. biggest fish was 9 lb 2 oz. baits used were sweetcorn, maggots and worm.

French anglers enjoy good pike fishing on Lough Corrib

A nice pike over a metre for a french visitor on Lough Corrib

Michael Canney reports on pike fishing for his clients at Portarra Lodge on Lough Corrib.

Last week saw the start of the Pike fishing at Portarra Lodge.  Two French anglers came here to try and get their dream fish – a pike of 100 cm. They were on a short visit of four days and boated 12 pike for their three days on the lake. Ten of the 12 pike were in the double figures with the best fish just over the Meter and weighting 18.25 lb. Ant one of those 10 pike would have been a personal best for both anglers and they were very happy that Lough Corrib fulfilled their dreams They, with two other angling friends, will pay a return visit in August/September of this year.  They had a wonderful camera and are going to compile a short film of their Piking experience and put it on Facebook – this should ensure an increase in the Pike anglers coming to Corrib from France.  Photo shows Alexandre Pilon With his Meter plus Pike.

PS.  I have it from very reliable information sources that recently (in the past two months at most) two Pike of 37.5 lb. and 24.5 lb. were caught on the Fly pretty close to Portarra Lodge.  Both fish were released back into the lake.

Eddie Maes with a 21 lb. pike at Melview Lodge

Eddy Maes and friend Ivan from Belgium were here once again for their annual fishing trip and to stay with Kevin and Jane at Melview Lodge in Longford, due to the up and down of the temperatures things were slow to get going. However they managed 65 Pike to 21 lb. during their stay, the bigger fish fell to float fished dead baits and the rest on lures and jerk baits. Their catch numbers were down on last years 108 but this was due to the weather, Kevin said the lads done well considering the weather and I’m sure we will see them back next year.
