Two salmon on spinners but Drowes is quiet

Monday 6th to Sunday 12th February 2012.

The weather was fairly variable once again this week. The week was mostly wet and cool but the weekend brought nice settled, dry conditions and we even got the odd beam of sunlight! Water levels were good and the gauge is now reading 0.65 metres.

The fishery was reasonably quiet with most rods fishing at the weekend. There were two fresh salmon recorded and one would have expected a few more given the high tides this week. It may be that given all the high water, most of the salmon are running through to the Lough? One of the fish was caught by William Rainey and weighed 5lb. It was caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Mill pool on Saturday morning. The other fish was of a similar size and was caught by G. McGonigle on a spinner from The Meadow also on Saturday.

Very steady rainbow trout fishing on a variety of flies reported from the Cashel Trout Fishery.

Cashel Trout Fishery report by Marlene McLaughlin

The weather has been quite pleasant this weekend and anglers are quite happy to give Cashel a throw.  Derry’s Aidy Askin released eight beauties which fell to buzzers.  Donegal’s Vincent Harkin and Christopher McKinley used buzzers also to bank five in total.  Billy Hazlett (Derry) banked one and released quite a few which took a wee suspender buzzer while Dungiven’s John Hasson and Martin Bradley used small lures to make their catches.  Pearse Doherty (Maghera) used the egg fly and small lures to bank seven great trout.  Kevin Burke (Claudy) released three which took a wee black nymph.

A 7 lb. salmon reported for the week on the River Drowes

RIVER DROWES – Monday 23rd January to Sunday 5th February 2012.
The weather was quite variable over the past fortnight with fair amounts of precipitation. The river rose due to heavy rainfall over the first week. The frosty weather (in fact the first frosts this winter!) during the early part of the second week meant the river began to fall again and was back down to 0.76 by the 2nd February. The wetter weather towards the latter half of the week ensured the river remained around this level into the weekend. The river was fairly quiet with few rods fishing and most of these that did fish, did so at the weekends. There was however another fresh salmon caught. A 7 lb salmon was caught and released on a spinner from the Upper Mill Pool on the first day of February.
