Another few salmon from the Killarney lakes last week

Water levels are still low on the Laune, lakes and Flesk.

There were 2 grilse reported from the Killarney Flesk weighing 3lbs each on worms last week.

Anglers also reported 3 grilse averaging 5lb and 1 salmon of about 8lb from the Killarney Lakes, caught trolling.

Poor hatches and poor evening rise on the Bride

River Bride
River Bride at Tallow

Evening Trout angling should be advanced by now but hatches of flies are poor due to unusually cold evenings/nights. Anglers would normally be starting angling by 8pm but are now off the river by then and are seeing very poor rises of Trout later than this.

Water levels have been slightly elevated during the week and the main channel is carrying a slight tinge of colour which is most likely a green/brown algae.

There are a number of angling clubs on the Bride centred on Tallow, Conna, Castlelyons, Glenville/Kildinan and Rathcormac. Day tickets and often membership is available in local shops, pubs and postoffices.

Salmon angling slowly improving but not many fishing on Munster Blackwater

Munster Blackwater at Lismore
Munster Blackwater at Lismore

Salmon angling throughout the Munster Blackwater is slowly improving with the best results emanating from those fisheries downstream of Fermoy, Co. Cork.

Some fine Salmon have been reported and observed by staff but angling for the time of year is far below those from those of the previous 5 years.

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

2024 Lure Team Ireland Qualifiers fished on Upper Erne

Erne Pike for Daniel

The Predator wing (fin?) or NCFFI tells us that just three boats battled it out on the Upper Lough Erne this weekend in the deferred third and final round of the qualifiers.

The weather was moody, changing from calm and sunny, to blustery with showers. Fishing was difficult with the top pair finishing with 11 pike on Saturday and 7 pike with 3 perch on Sunday. The best fish was caught by Daniel at 110cm.

NCFFI gave thanks to Pascal at Watermill Fishing Lodge Ireland for the excellent hospitality and assistance.

Plenty of drama at South Shore master angler

Roney Point
Roney Point

Alby Allan from South Shore SAC reports on their latest event, fished at the weekend…

The popular Roney Point was the venue for the latest leg of the Southshore Master Angler. A small tide and “summerish” weather greeted anglers onto the beach & an oily calm surface looked good for the various types of shark that had been showing up recently.

the storm approaches

A selection of crab, fish & worm baits were sent seaward in anticipation! Not 10 minutes into the match, the ominous sky opened with ferocity and a biblical downpour with a laser light show to match unleashed itself mercilessly on the beach! The only unfortunate event while anglers hid in their shelters was for Smoothound Specialist Thomas Keogh where his rod buried over and he had to emerge into the maelstrom where he gleefully landed a 93cm hound!

93cm smoothhound
93cm smoothhound

There was a decent number of fish showing with smoothies, whiting, flats & dogs all being landed. Unfortunately due to the odd downpour we don’t have many photos! Zone A was performing well with Gavin Fogarty & the ever improving Ramunas Butkas landing plenty of fish with Dave Coleman also catching extremely well early doors.

Zone B was fishing well also with Ciaran Fogarty catching a lot of fish, with Ruairi Coleman, John Keane & Gordy Hardman pushing hard to keep pace.

In the final shakeup, Gavin & Ciaran kept it a family affair with a couple of zone wins. Second in Zone A was Ramunas with Dave Coleman finishing third. Zone B saw Ruairi finish second & John Keane taking yet another podium spot.

Pools were taken by Thomas’s 93cm Smoothie & Jarek Podoba’s 26 cm flounder.

Ruairi Coleman had drawn the golden peg which now has rolled on a number of occasions and is several hundred euros……THERE WAS DRAMA……Ruairi hooked into a tope and patiently & expertly played it right into the beach until the unfortunate & inevitable bite off occurred. So close but yet so far! There was a few other close calls with larger toothy critters again – brilliant to see them showing on the beaches!

Would you Belize it! A wet day on the Maigue

fishing the Maigue

Paddy Dunworth of Celtic Angling reports from the Maigue:

15 June: Weather for the Swans – I met Kayla and Keith Bassett at Adare this morning for an Intro to Flyfishing session on the Maigue. We started at 8.30am to get a few hours in before the fast-rising tide hunted us off it around noon. Kayla and Keith are Limerick based, Keith hails from Oregon and Kayla is originally from Belize where I’m sure she was used to far better weather than what greeted us. The rain you could forgive, along with the 25km wind, but the cool temperature is not what you expect in mid June.

Both anglers were totally new to fly-fishing. They braved the elements and were rewarded with a couple of fish. It’s difficult enough to introduce folk to fly-fishing in such a short time, but to do so in such inclement conditions is a tribute to their enthusiasm and good nature. They’re loving Ireland and all it’s outdoors has to offer so I hope to see them back again on a more favourable day. Fish released carefully, apologies for photo quality, I need wipers on my camera lens.

Some grilse on Currane last week but quiet so far this week

Caught in the net
Caught in the net

There were 4 grilse and a few sea trout to 4lb reported to staff in Waterville for the week ended on Sunday. The upper lakes were also said to be fishing. Vincent Appleby’s reports from Lough Currane don’t include the catches mentioned above and what they have for this week so far does not make great reading unless you’re working on your tan…

13/6/2024. Well, we certainly didn’t get a good flood, I will have all the facts in tomorrow’s report so on that note here’s today’s facts. There were three boats out, sadly their reels and lines were silent and slack. Wind fresh WNW followed by showers throughout the day. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 1.6mm, amount of sunshine 8hrs.1mins, maximum air temperature 15.8°C.

Mr. E.M.H Appleby, DAD RIP
Mr. E.M.H Appleby, Dad RIP

I finish today’s report to remember my Father and Currane Angler because today is a very special day to me and all the family on this his Heavenly Birthday, Rest In Peace Dad.

14/6/2024. The Currane anglers were all quiet in all departments this day. Wind light to fresh WNW followed by reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 23.1mm, amount of sunshine 1hr.0min, maximum air temperature 15.1°C. Going back to the rainfall, the land took the majority of the goodness and as Miley would say, well Holy God.

15/6/2024. Lough Currane was on the wild side this morning with a strong WNW wind blowing up to 41 km/h, gusts up to 56 km/h, come afternoon it calmed down, sadly no reports of any rod benders. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 4.3mm, amount of sunshine 8hrs.2mins, maximum air temperature °C.

16/6/2024. The Currane anglers certainly had their suntan lotion on this day, as the sun blazed down on the Currane waters, even though there was a nice light to fresh wind from the WNW and variable, their reels and lines stayed silent and slack, going by my WhatsApple. Now we head for poetic Currane anglers view on drink while fishing, the stage is yours. Beer is the secret to catching fish. In order to think like a fish, you have to drink like a fish, Cheers.

17/6/2024. The Currane anglers frustration is understandable, four boats headed out on to a low lake and by the end of their day, it was the same old story, nothing to report. They say their frustrated, they should be in my shoes but thankfully I’m full of it, so carry on fishing and I’ll carry on reporting. Wind NNE light to fresh and sunny throughout the day. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.0mm, amount of sunshine 13hrs.5mins., maximum air temperature 15.8°C.

18/6/2024. There were no reports of any rod benders today, except for the Currane anglers fluent language cutting across the Currane waters. Wind NNE light to fresh, followed by bright sunshine all day. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.7mm, amount of sunshine 2hrs.3mins, maximum air temperature 15.9°C.

19/6/2024. The heat is on in all departments so you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know today’s results and if I’m wrong, we all would be delighted. Now we head for the Currane anglers weather department, wind light to fresh NNE and veered NW late this afternoon, followed by bright sunshine. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.9mm, amount of sunshine 6hrs.2mins.,maximum air temperature 15.5°C.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Specimen coalfish, big ling, blue sharks and a monster porbeagle at Courtmacsherry

Porbeagle - a really big one!
Porbeagle - a really big one!. Estimated at 3.5m by white shark researchers

Dave Edwards reports on some exciting charter boat fishing with West Cork Charters out of Courtmacsherry…

12 June: Some top shark fishing this week with good Blues showing.
Today we still had a good Blue but we’re amazed to see a massive Porbeagle of around 400lb taking some of our catch on the offshore wrecks. It was a long day but a fine selection of fish was topped by Bert McGregors 50th specimen, a superb Coalfish [And worthy Catch of the Week winner – Ed.].

13 June: I was contacted by Australian shark scientists this morning asking for more shots of yesterday’s huge Porbeagle Shark. They thought it was a Great White until looking at a closer shot of the gills.
They are actually tagging Great Whites this week and sent a video of one that they estimate to be the same size as our shark.
It’s 3.5 metres long, so Niall onboard yesterday who has actually cage dived in South Africa with them, was probably right when he said it was a similar size to those that he had dived with.
I suppose I’ve been used to so many Basking Sharks recently, I underestimated things.
Unlike anglers, scientists don’t tend to exaggerate.
