Some great saltwater fly fishing reported from Cork Harbour

Richie Ryan has been enjoying a great mix of saltwater fly fishing adventures on Cork Harbour. He met a fine shoal of Bass on May 4th and enjoyed brilliant fun on the fly with Jacques Bronkhorst and Kevin Mc Loughlin. By the end of the session they had close on 30 Bass to the boat. A return trip a couple of days later saw only one bass caught. Luckily Jacques and Richie had some excellent Pollack on the fly as a substitute.

Friday 10th of May and Richie was back out on the water, this time with comedian Bob Stevenson. Bob had some fine Pollack on the fly. The also had a small bass and Richie landed a cod on fly.

It was more pollack on Sunday. This time the lucky angler was Aaid Mirza, who thoroughly enjoyed his first taste of saltwater fly fishing. He told Richie he was coming back for another session as soon as possible!

Thirteen species and more for anglers on Clare’s Lady Gwen

Clare skipper Sean Maguire reports that his anglers have had enjoyed a few cracking days on the Atlantic.

They had more than 13 species on Saturday on the drift and at anchor, including a baby Tope. Bait is not an issue and they are getting a reasonable amount of mackerel, mostly close to the shore.

Mixed bag for Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation on Royal Canal

The Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation were on the banks of the Royal Canal at Blackshade Bridge over the weekend. With thunder rolling away in the distance, the possibility of a drenching was never too far away, but luckily the weather stayed dry throughout.

One of the nice bream caught on the day

Angling was a bit of a mixed bag, with some anglers getting into a few nice bream while other anglers struggled to conjure a bite. Ambrose Devlin didn’t get a single bite until 3:30 p.m., but it turned out to be a 4lb+ bream, and that lone fish was enough to give him second place in his section. Angler of the day was Conor Browne, with a fine bag tipping the scales at 10lb+.

A fine brace of decent bream helped Conor to the win

Naas anglers knock-up brings plenty of bream and tench

The Naas and District Anglers had a small competition on the canal at the weekend, and given the bright, hot, sunny weather, they probably had low enough expectations of catching. But, for once, the sun didn’t put the fish off the take, and there were bream and tench netted all along the competition stretch. There were a handful of double-figure catches, and Ron came out on top with a 13lb+ bag.

Fine bass helps Ciaran Fogarty to win at Kilcoole

The anglers from South Shore SAC were back on Kilcoole at the weekend for the latest round of their Master Angler competition. Many of the anglers present had struggled at that same venue a couple of weeks previously and so were probably anxious to see if there would be any improvement in the quality of the fishing.

A staple East Coast doggie

Luckily, a couple of weeks can make a difference, and the fish were more obliging, with a few of the ‘summer species’ such as gurnards, putting in a welcome appearance. But the fish of the day went to a super 57cm bass for Ciaran Fogarty, a fish which helped him to an overall win with 14 fish from Zone A. On Zone B, it was Ruairi Coleman who came out top with five fish. See full report on the South Shore SAC Facebook page.

Swinging wets for trout on the Nore

Dan O’Neill reports from the River Nore at Mouth Juliet…

During the week I met a man originally from Newcastle but living in New York for most of his life. A very competent angler taught by no other than Lefty Kreh. We had some great takes swinging wet flies.

Nore

Michael had a unique accent, it was a mix of Geordie and New York. Super fun with some of the words he used, no bad language of course!! Michael was a very competent caster which made me wonder where he learned or how he learned. When Michael looked at me and asked did I know the late Lefty Kreh I immediately said “Yes, I studied his casting for my APGAI exams”. Lefty had a very no nonsense way of teaching and simplified everything. He knew the level at which his students were very accurately which is a very important to maximise what your client gets from each lesson.

We began at the head of Georges Wall. Michael was on New Zealand style while I began with wet fly. On my 2nd or 3rd cast I had a nice take and landed a lovely little brown about 28-30cm. Michael was getting some takes but mostly small trout, so we swapped over. Funnily enough and it’s nothing to do with my skill level, I hit a brown about 30cm on the New Zealand style first cast. Michael looked and smiled and said “Don’t worry, it will happen for me at some point”. I am a little superstitious and believe good luck happens in threes, what would my three be.

Moving down the run Michael did indeed hit some nice trout of about 30cm so he was happy and enjoyed seeing some Irish brown trout. The pattern I was using was by Ciaran Reilly who gave me some patterns to try at the spring angling fair. They worked exceptionally well so thanks very much Ciaran. As we headed back up to the Manor House, we spoke of Michael’s angling journeys and some of mine. Wonderful day and wonderful company. Always wonderful to hear stories and in this case some of Lefty Kreh’s anecdotes.
