Cobh SAC had glorious conditions on Sunday and some fantastic fishing on the two boats out for second leg in their club’s Master Angler Competition. Apart from some great catches they were also treated to the spectacle of a couple of hundred basking sharks swimming around them. It made for some very enjoyable moments and pictures, watching the magnificent creatures swim back and forth.
As for the fishing, there were some fine sized pollack, conger and various other species landed. Best was a beautiful specimen bullhuss for one of Cobh SAC’s up and coming junior Anglers Jay O’Halloran.

Ciara Mc Carthy and Cody Costello teamed up with Chris Barry of Go Fishing Ireland for a recent pike fishing trip. The fish were feeding well and plenty of action came to their lures. Cody battled with a number of very lively 90+cm fish , but top honours went to Ciara with a fine fish of 101cms. A new personal best. Just goes to prove that the ladies can hold their own when it comes to pike fishing.

Separately, Joe Corcoran and friends enjoyed a day out on the water to celebrate his birthday. Everyone caught pike, but birthday honours were reserved for Joe who fittingly landed the biggest fish of the day, and a new PB. Congratulations Joe, and Happy Birthday!

Well, the mayfly is underway at last! We have had good hatches of fly in some parts of the lake but not the overall big hatch yet. Sometimes, in sunny conditions, it is difficult to see how many flies are hatching off. Due to slack winds, some days a write-off for the dappers which was a pity. However I did see the long rods out this week. Last Thursday and Friday we have had great falls of spent which gives us a chance to catch the big trout, if we can locate them that is! Anyone out on the lake on Friday night had spectacular views of the Northern Lights over Lough Arrow. While the fishing has been difficult and challenging at times, talking to visiting anglers – they have had a lovely few days on this special lake.

We held our annual Mayfly Competition on Sunday 12th May last. A total of 57 anglers took part for The Des McDonagh Cup. 19 fish were caught & released on the day.
Fishing conditions were not ideal and like the previous weekend, the weather was not suitable for dapping or the wets. Our winner with 4 trout was Diarmuid O’Brien – a great catch in those conditions. Congratulations also to Abbie McTiernan, winner of the junior angling competition and also to Paul Smith who caught the heaviest fish.

We all met in The Mayfly Inn for the prize giving and catch-up with friends – thanks again to Philip and Ellie for being such good hosts.
Fly expert Gerald from Austria, who is a regular visitor to the Boyle area, enjoyed a super week’s pike fishing recently. Conditions weren’t always ideal but Gerald finished his week with a total of 5 pike over the meter best at 104cm.
One of many super fish for Gerlad
He also had numerous 80+ and 90+ fish. Gerald was fishing his own sophisticated shooting head systems utilising a range of different density lines which enabled him to adapt quickly and vary the presentation of his XXL flies. Gerald showed once more that the fly can be as successful as “conventional” methods and even outperfom other lures when conditions are tricky.
Another stunning Esox for the Austrian fly expert
Gerald is already looking forward to October when he will return to Boyle to target more hard fighting Irish pike.
More recently, a rare opportunity to cast a fly line myself opened up while fishing with friends over the weekend. Nice to break in the new rod with a well-fed Esox over the magic one meter mark.
A great way to christen the new rod for Bodo

Richie Ryan has been enjoying a great mix of saltwater fly fishing adventures on Cork Harbour. He met a fine shoal of Bass on May 4th and enjoyed brilliant fun on the fly with Jacques Bronkhorst and Kevin Mc Loughlin. By the end of the session they had close on 30 Bass to the boat. A return trip a couple of days later saw only one bass caught. Luckily Jacques and Richie had some excellent Pollack on the fly as a substitute.

A nice little codling on the fly this morning. They’re so scarce I released it. Brilliant fight on a fly rod !
It was more pollack on Sunday. This time the lucky angler was Aaid Mirza, who thoroughly enjoyed his first taste of saltwater fly fishing. He told Richie he was coming back for another session as soon as possible!
Why not try fishing from the first licensed saltwater fly-fishing boat in Ireland in the second largest natural harbour in the world? Your guide, Commander Richie Ryan Retd. , has built up a huge knowledge of bass fishing, over the last 30 years.
Notes:Â With a purpose built boat he is insured to carry up to 3 anglers. Bass and pollock on the fly are the main target species.
Young and old are welcome and if you have no knowledge of fly-fishing, other methods are available. Richie has been responsible for a vast number of clients catching that elusive first ever bass.
Clare skipper Sean Maguire reports that his anglers have had enjoyed a few cracking days on the Atlantic.
They had more than 13 species on Saturday on the drift and at anchor, including a baby Tope. Bait is not an issue and they are getting a reasonable amount of mackerel, mostly close to the shore.
Notes:Â Whether you want to go to the Atlantic Ocean for a large selection of species, including different types of shark, or fish the estuary for ray conger tope etc, Fishing Adventures will cater for whatever fishing you desire. With state of the art electronics, quality fishing gear, and large deck space, the Lady Gwen II is a stable and comfortable boat to fish.
The Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation were on the banks of the Royal Canal at Blackshade Bridge over the weekend. With thunder rolling away in the distance, the possibility of a drenching was never too far away, but luckily the weather stayed dry throughout.
One of the nice bream caught on the day
Angling was a bit of a mixed bag, with some anglers getting into a few nice bream while other anglers struggled to conjure a bite. Ambrose Devlin didn’t get a single bite until 3:30 p.m., but it turned out to be a 4lb+ bream, and that lone fish was enough to give him second place in his section. Angler of the day was Conor Browne, with a fine bag tipping the scales at 10lb+.
A fine brace of decent bream helped Conor to the win
The Naas and District Anglers had a small competition on the canal at the weekend, and given the bright, hot, sunny weather, they probably had low enough expectations of catching. But, for once, the sun didn’t put the fish off the take, and there were bream and tench netted all along the competition stretch. There were a handful of double-figure catches, and Ron came out on top with a 13lb+ bag.
The anglers from South Shore SAC were back on Kilcoole at the weekend for the latest round of their Master Angler competition. Many of the anglers present had struggled at that same venue a couple of weeks previously and so were probably anxious to see if there would be any improvement in the quality of the fishing.
A staple East Coast doggie
Luckily, a couple of weeks can make a difference, and the fish were more obliging, with a few of the ‘summer species’ such as gurnards, putting in a welcome appearance. But the fish of the day went to a super 57cm bass for Ciaran Fogarty, a fish which helped him to an overall win with 14 fish from Zone A. On Zone B, it was Ruairi Coleman who came out top with five fish. See full report on the South Shore SAC Facebook page.
