Patchy mayfly fishing on Corrib as weather plays a part

Over the last week the weather has been fairly bright, with light winds and bright sunshine on some days. Mayfly hatches and fishing have been patchy, with some days better than others. However, many anglers have had good sport and we have some nice reports and photos from the lake.

Declan Black sent in a great photo of daughter Caroline, aged 8, with the third of her trout caught on Monday on the dap off Dooras . After 2 blank days last year, her luck turned. So much so that the third was caught after she asked for ten more seconds fishing and the fish duly took at the end of the countdown!

George Ashton, visiting from the UK and fishing with Peter Corcoran, had a nice surprise when he landed what appears to be a sea trout – quite uncommon on Corrib. Silvery trout are found in certain parts of the lake with a sandy/marl bottom, but this one is certainly a lot more similar to a sea trout. Well done George!

The Cornamona area experienced good hatches of mayfly over the last week and good fishing some days, although maybe not ideal for the Corr na Mona club’s annual Wetfly competition on Sunday, which nevertheless had a great turnout. Fishing conditions were not great with flat calm and sunny conditions up to 5:00pm with some windy conditions in the last hour.

34 anglers returned 17 trout. Congratulations to the winner on the day Barry Molloy who had 4 trout for 9llb 7.8 oz. Barry won the Michael J. Sullivan Cup for best bag and he also won the Jackie Molloy Cup for heaviest fish which weighed 4lb 2.8oz. Tom Doc Sullivan was 2nd with two trout for 5lb 9oz and 3rd place went to Mike Coyne with 2 trout for 5lbs 8.5oz

Paul Heaney from Corrib Anglers reports inconsistent fishing over the last few days. Wednesday in particular had perfect conditions for wet fly fishing but with little or no fly on the water it turned out to be a disaster for most anglers. Paul fished from Devinish to Kilbeg and back to Annaghkeen and had 4 trout that may just about have measured 13 inches (“if I drove my car over them!”). Mind you all four gave a great fight and all four took a Lough Arrow wet mayfly. My good friend, top guide David Donnelly, had a busman’s holiday on Thursday with his pal Ceri Jones and had 5 good trout in and around Birchall on buzzers. David has a few guiding days available and can be contacted through Corrib Anglers (details below).

One of David Donnelly’s trout from Birchall, a fine fish indeed

Visiting angler Mark Davies with his colleague Kevin went out from Greenfields under the causeway to Ballycurran and beyond fishing dry fly and had a few throwbacks again with little or no fly on the water. Paul also included some photos of nice trout taken on dry olives around Saddle and Lime Islands at the weekend.

Ferox

Tomi Kurman has been putting his clients over some good ferox, as usual! Neil Cunningham came from Scotland with one aim – to catch an Irish ferox trout, and his mission was certainly accomplished. His trip was marked by big changes in weather – T-shirts and sunburn one day, hats and gloves the next!

Another client had one counting ferox and 2 “smaller ones” according to Tomi. We like his definition of small!!!

Competitions

A number of clubs are holding mayfly competitions this weekend.

Cong Anglers are holding their annual Wetflty competition this Sunday, see flyer below for details.

Headford and Corrib Anglers are holding the annual Andrew Egan Cup, fishing from Greenfields. Registration in Greenfields at 10.30, fishing 11am to 6pm. €20 entry for boatman, €30 for non-boating anglers. Anyone interested can send their name by WhatsApp to 087 6740144

Dappers are also catered for in the Ballindiff Angling Club annual Mayfly Competition, also on Sunday. All are welcome.

First Fish awards bring smiles to young anglers on Shepperton Lakes

William Walsh from Cork sent us in this report on passing the angling baton on to younger generations:

My wife Helena and I took our two grandchildren, Saoirse, age 6, and Cian, age 8, on their first fishing trip to Shepperton Lakes yesterday. This is the 3rd generation of our family from Cork City that we have taught to fish on this lake, as our oldest grandson Jordan caught his first trout there many years ago. What an adventure they had! They caught 3 trout and 5 Rudd (rudd returned alive) between them, which was two species of fish, wonderful. They are still on a high and hopefully hooked on fishing forever like their Grandad (a lifelong angler), and they can’t wait to go fishing again. We presented them with a medal each for catching their “First Fish” so they will never forget this special day in their lives, fishing with Nana and Grandad.

Super angling exploits by the young duo!

Clean sweep for Dublin Trout Anglers on Conn & Cullin

A view of Lough Conn from the northern end of the lake

Lough Conn and Lough Cullin

The annual competition between the Dublin Trout Anglers Association and Lough Conn and Cullin Anglers was fished over the May bank holiday weekend on the lakes.

Saturday was a catch and release only event using a points system with Dublin winning this one with a total of 36 trout, with Lough Conn and Cullin anglers coming second.

On Sunday 5th May both clubs were fishing for “The Pratt Cup” with a 13-inch limit in place.  P.J O’Driscoll from the Dublin Trout Anglers Association came out as the winner of this one with two trout weighing a total of 1.33 kg. Paul Delaney came a close second also with two trout weighing a total of 1.1kg giving the Dublin anglers a clean sweep for this year. Third place went to Joe Ferguson with one fish.  He fished Lough Cullin with his son Cian who also boated a keeper and deservedly won a special junior competitor prize.

The best of the fishing was on the Saturday with a consistent light wind and some fly activity offering the assembled anglers many chances.

Archie hooked on fishing the Dodder

A colleague of ours was walking the Dodder at the weekend and came across a young man who had just landed a lovely trout. Archie McCauley caught his fish just upstream of the City Weir at Firhouse and was delighted with himself.

Archie with his Dodder trout

We love seeing junior anglers catching their first fish, and have no doubt Archie will not quickly forget his. Hopefully a name and face we see plenty more of in our angling reports! Archie may not realise it yet, but the trout was probably not the only one hooked on Sunday…

Well done Archie!

The Dodder Anglers will be holding their annual Eddie Edmonds Cup this Saturday, May 11th from 11am to 4pm. The competition is strictly fly only and competitors will meet and register at the Dropping Well car park in Milltown. Anyone wanting to fish the Dodder should join the club (https://www.facebook.com/dodder.anglers/), it costs an adult €10 for the whole season and €5 for juveniles. Members also have access to the Bohernabreena reservoirs (fly fishing only in the reservoirs) – you wouldn’t get that kind of value anywhere. Membership cards can be purchased through all of the Dublin tackle shops.

Plenty of fish on West Clare reefs for Isle of Aran crew

Skipper Sean Maguire had a group out on Saturday last, a lovely fair day with calm seas. They headed out west and set up a nice steady drift over reefs towards Loop Head. Some big mackerel, although not pentiful prvided bait, and pollack and coalies aplenty kept the crew happy for the day.

A full house of coalies!

Good coalie fishing on the Clare Dragoon

Skipper Luke Aston has been out a fair bit over the past couple of weeks, and reports some very good fishing on the deep reefs offshore.

This week mackerel have been in good supply at Loop Head, providing plenty of bait and good eating too.

Plentiful mackerel

The reefs produced lots of pollack and coalfish to 5lbs. Some link and fine whiting were caught too, but often the sheer number of coalies made it hard to get to the bottom. A good complaint to have!

Pollack

Luke notes that the fish this year seem to be stuffed with small squid – he’s never seen so many. Maybe a box of calamari would be a good idea for bait…

Luke also posted a photo of a poster that most charter skippers are now displaying on their boats. As the group the charter skippers of Ireland are taking some measures to encourage anglers to put back smaller pollack that will survive. A worthwhile conservation initiative and well done to the skippers!
