Salmon angling on the Blackwater has improved significantly with a few fish being reported each day, especially on those fisheries downstream of Fermoy, Co. Cork.

Blackwater river levels are normal for the time of year and running as clear as it has been for the season so far.

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Dan O’Neill looks forward to the Irish Spring Angling Fair this weekend!

I always look forward to fishing fairs. The knowledge, the anglers, watching the kids starting out on their journey and many times watching the adults beginning theirs. Very much on my journey myself i enjoy watching other exhibitors listening to their analogies and approach to demonstrations.

Ardaire springs is a venue i go to quite a lot with my son Anthony. We both enjoy fishing there, the setting is spectacular, the fish are always in great condition and fight hard. Another huge factor is the staff in Ardaire.I remember filming with George Mcgrath for Gundog and fly, it was freezing literally. Ned invited us in to sit by the stove and gave us all a cup of tea, its small gestures like this that give a fishery a unique feel. It was of course a tough job to get Anthony to sit down when there was such a nice lake 20meters away.

Last year at Ardaire springs angling fair i was lucky enough to be part of the kids casting event. What a superb event and the kids were fantastic. They would come out with their fly that they tied at the Apgai stand with Joe Stitt, Trevour Greene and Arthur Greenwood. Three absolute gentlemen and legends, their teaching methods and understanding is second to none. What a foundation of knowledge for any angler to be able to tap into, looking forward to seeing them again this year.

I am very much looking forward to doing it all again this year. With an invite from Ned himself to give a demo on Carp on the fly. I will also be with Apgai helping with the kids casting and Cadence, who i am delighted to be involved with.

Looking back at the fair last year it was an absolute hive of activity. People meeting and greeting each other, trying out fly rods, looking at some of the latest tackle creations and of course some taking it all in as i was. It was great for people to be able to get out and cast some fly rods on the water, I am a great believer in getting to try out a fly rod before its purchased. Getting to try it out on water is a huge bonus making the Ardaire springs angling fair the perfect place to try out your chosen rod. Lines are very important too so it’s a good place to perhaps try a line at one of the try before you buy stands.

For me it’s great to meet all my angling friends as once the season starts, we generally only ever get to speak over the phone, email or zoom. Getting to see each other is brilliant and watching the angling community come together to celebrate our sport is second to none.

I do hope to see a lot of you at the fair this year, my demo slots are on the line up board. I will also be with Cadence and Apgai.Really looking forward to seeing all the young anglers having a cast again this year, meeting up with other anglers to discuss some techniques and of course tricks.

For all travelling to the fair i wish you all a very safe trip, I look forward to seeing you all.

Ardaire Springs Angling fair

It’s finally here, this weekend all roads lead to Ardaire springs. The line-up is superb. Looking forward to meeting everyone and having a chat about our wonderful sport. Make sure an bring the kids along for some fly tying and fishing at the kids’ corner.

Dean Murray is All Ireland Canal Champion 2024

Congratulations to Dean Murray who is the NCFFI All Ireland Canal Champion of 2024 with an overall weight of 16.46kg!

Twenty Seven anglers turned out for the 2024 edition of the championships last weekend. Five sections were chosen for the two-day competition, spread out between the Millennium Bridge, Town, and Heffernan’s stretches of the Grand Canal at Daingean.

Murray’s canal bream tipped the scales to winning weights

The anglers were met with cold conditions on day one and the fishing was poor. With the normal roach population seemingly not there only very small fish were caught with the exception of those who managed a tench or bream for a section win. An overnight frost didn’t help for day two, but the bream showed in several pegs providing notable catches to 13kg.

  • 1st Dean Murray 16.46 kg
  • 2nd Vlad Alexandru 13.22 kg
  • 3rd Bob Hulme 7.34 kg
  • 4th Colin Oliver 6.99 kg

Well done to Dean and Vlad, both fabulous young anglers and also to Bob and Colin, who both showed their class.

Section Winners

  • Day 1: Jimmy Kelly, Ron Durkin, Pat Bartley, Richie Keegan, Dean Murray
  • Day 2: Paul McLoughlin, Vlad Alexandru, Sean Ward, Colin Oliver, Dean Murray

The organisers thank to all those who took part, Waterways Ireland and especially the staff in the Blackthorn pub in Daingean for their hospitality for the draws and the presentation (and great food, well worth a visit).

Ireland on the Fly Podcast: Rory’s – a legendary place and person in Irish fly fishing

Rory’s.  It’s a famous name with a famous owner, Rory Harkin, of Rory’s Tackle Shop in Temple Bar in Dublin.

But did you know it opened its doors in 1959 when there were just warehouses around the area and trout and salmon could be caught by the bucketful within Dublin’s environs?

Rory Harkin may have passed on the running of the shop to his daughter Mary but he joins Tom & Daire on this week’s Ireland on the Fly to talk about his love of fly fishing, meeting and fishing with so many household names – including Charles Ritz, Hugh Falkus and Kingsmill Moore – and why the shop was always about more than just selling rods…
