Good bass fishing for Limerick anglers at Thatch Cottage in Kerry

bss

John Quinlan reports on the bass fishing around Ballinskelligs Bay which burst into life this weekend…

Finally our season gets underway. We had to postpone their trip a couple of weeks ago due to bad weather but Owen and Tom from Limerick got things off to a good start. A few nice bass landed in beautiful sunny conditions. Hopefully these conditions last for a bit longer!

Fine ling among catches in Clare

Another fine ling

Skipper Luke Aston was back on the water last weekend to kickstart a busy season, and what a couple of days they had, with blue skies and a calm sea. All they needed was good fishing, and that was available too. Although mackerel were in short supply,

Luke: On Saturday we tried for mackerel around Loop Head but only got 1 and a few coalies. Moving off the fishing picked up as the tide started to fill. Drifts on the reefs were producing plenty of coalfish with a scatter of pollack and some spurdogs. We even got a few strings of mackerel and a fine ling.

Nice pollack

Finally some mackerel!

Sunday

A drift Sunday morning at the Loop produced no mackerel but a nice mix of pollack and coalfish. Moving out onto the reefs to mix it up a bit, the best of the fish was this ling and spurdog, both over 12 lbs.
A quick stop on the way in did provide 20 or so mackerel and a heap of small coalfish.

Great fishing in West Clare sunshine

Last weekend saw the arrival of something we’ve all been missing – sunshine! Bright sun and calm seas were a godsend to boat anglers, most oif whom have not been afloat since last year. Skipper Sean Maguire took full advantage, getting his clients offshore for some much needed Vitamin D and plenty of rod-bending action!

Mackerel were a bit hard to come by, but those that were caught were a decent size and provided some good bait.

Fresh bait

Once bait was sorted, the reefs provided a very good mix of species and plenty of fish for everyone.

Pitcher lands the catch of a lifetime at Delphi

David McEvoy has good news from Delphi, where a run of spring fish produced some good fishing last week, with 6 fish landed

Oliver Ross strruck first on the 12th, with a 10.5lbs fish taken on a Willie Gunn from Finlough. Next was Mauricio Gordillo on the 13th, with a 7.5lbs fish from Horseshoe Pool, taken on a Delphi Collie.

The following day Seamus O’ Neill also hit the jackpot in the Horseshoe, and also fishing a Delphi Collie he landed a fine fish of 13lbs.

Dominic Breen-Turner visited from the Isle of Wight, UK and landed his first ever salmon.a fine 10lbs fish from the Fin stream. Just to make it more special, Dominic was fishing a Cascade on a 100-year-old split cane rod belonging to his grandfather, 10lbs.

Another angler to catch his first salmon was Elias Osterkorn from Germany. Elias fished a Willie Gunn and landed a fresh 8.5lbs fish off Finlough.

Finally retired pro baseball pitcher Rick Porcello visited from the US and landed his first ever salmon from the Rock Pool on a Sunray Shadow. And what a first fish! 91cm of picture perfection, estimated at 17lbs 12oz according to length-weight conversion charts. The wild fish was released again after a quick photo that will no doubt soon be mounted on Rick’s wall at home.

Great buzzer fishing for big ‘bows on Annagh Lake

Anglers fishing Annagh Lake in Cavan have reported some great fishing for rainbow trout on buzzers at the minute. The lake is stocked regularly with rainbow trout, and some of those overwinter in the lake, growing to a decent size, and a few of those have been turning up after the recent mild spell.

Annagh Lake is a clear spring-fed lake and has great facilities including an angling hut, compost toilet and boat jetty that enables wheelchair access. The fishing is run by the local angling clubs, and details on the fishery, including permits, etc, are available here.

Roach aplenty and pike for Dan and Anthony on the Barrow

River Barrow Coarse Fishing

With rivers dropping to a nice level I had a place in mind for the last couple of weeks. I recently was sent a rod from Cadence that I really wanted to test out on some roach and possibly hybrids. The area I had chosen was a deep stretch near a woodland. I found over the years the roach tend to gather here. Rooting in the shed I found my trusty ground bait bucket, for the contents it was away to the supermarket for this week’s recipe.

  • 1 tin finely chopped luncheon meat
  • 3 tins sweetcorn
  • 1 cupful of cooked hemp
  • Half a loaf of bread
  • 3kg of layers pellets
  • 3 handfuls of sand / crumbly soil

All left to soak for about 10mins then churned about and left to soak for a further 20mins until a stiff mix is formed.

Heading to the Barrow I had my angling advisor Anthony with me. We loaded up the van and off we went to dig a few worms. Gathering the worms and getting the odd word of advice from the executive box (grandad’s shed) we headed to our fishing spot. Arriving the river conditions looked lovely. Wasting no time loading up we headed down the bank. We discussed strategies and who was going to fish for what. I was firmly set on roach/hybrids while Anthony was skipping to a different species with each footstep, as I did when I was his age.

When we arrived, it was time to set up, I had a light ledger rig and used sweetcorn as bait. My idea was to ground bait a slack spot and allow the ledger to bounce along the bottom through the ground bait or to the side. Anthony started with a waggler float and used his Cadence 10ft pellet waggler. The ground bait was just ready so we threw in some about 10-15ft above where we wanted it to hit the bottom. We also threw in about half a tin of sweetcorn 25-30ft above the area. Anthony cast in and had a nice roach first run which was a really promising sign. The casts that followed he also picked up some nice roach, they really fought hard in the deep current and the bites on the waggler were superb. The float would dip and then shoot downstream. Watching the float never gets old, working it downstream occasionally holding it back to allow the corn to rise a little in the water then drop. Having a picture in your mind of what the corn is doing as it glides through, then it turns and shoots downstream as a fish takes. It was just a wonderful sight and glide.

I had opted for the light ledger rig. I cast in and let the lead bounce or run along the bottom, it would stop and then id get a long slow pull on the rod tip as the fish turned. Lifting into them was exciting and they really did fight hard. The rod of choice today was the cadence 12ft specimen rod which comes with 2 top sections. One is a 1 pound test curve and the other a multi tip. I had the 3oz tip in which was perfect for today. I had roach over a pound in weight and quite a few at that. I was reeling in one roach and in the deep water it was flicking and flashing when I saw a large shadow behind it. I reeled in quicker as I knew Mr. Pike was going to take a swipe. Just as the fish came to the surface the pike thrashed which got the attention of my angling advisor. Anthony quickly grabbed the pike rod and a lure. He cast in and danced the lure about a bit and it wasn’t long before there was a flash under the surface and the pike was on. Not a very big pike but a pike none the less. We took a quick picture and away the pike went.

As the evening went on, we had lots more roach. A couple of dropped fish that of course did seem bigger and fought deep and hard.

A wonderful day with plenty of roach and surprise pike. No hybrids today but I will certainly be back soon to try again.

Ardaire Springs Angling Fair

Superb line up this year. This is a great chance to speak to some of the best in the business. Fly tiers, casters, advisors and developers all with vast knowledge. The kids casting and tying will be in full swing and I hope to see some of the kids’ casters from last year so they can show me what they learned. I will be there with Cadence and APGAI so feel free to stop by and say hello.

Olives hatching on the Nore

Dan O’Neill reports on his weekend…

I felt very lucky this weekend as I got to move along a bit on my angling journey and even got a few casts in.

My first stop this weekend was to meet Glenda Powell to take part in one of her Spey courses. An opportunity not to be missed. Watching how the course was conducted was very special. As an instructor I tend to look beyond the casting aspect of a course. It can be very daunting for some people to stand beside a casting instructor and cast. I get that fear I had in school when people would take turns reading then suddenly the person beside me starts reading meaning I’m next in the spotlight, rabbit in headlights moment. Somehow Glenda could make this disappear and it was more like being at home or on the river with a client and me showing them a particular cast. It’s an amazing trait to have, having such a vast knowledge but hiding it from the client which puts them at ease, and they absorb far more this way. Then of course there was the casting. It was artful the way the casts were presented. We had some lovely venison stew that Glenda made for lunch with some apple tart (Thanks Noel). It doesn’t get much better than looking at the Blackwater with superb company and having venison stew with apple tart for dessert, mother nature even sent the sunshine.

The other side of my weekend was wet fly fishing on the River Nore. It was great to get down and have a cast, plenty of fish in the eddies and along the bank where the current was deflected slightly by an upstream obstacle creating strips of slower water a few feet from the bank. I had been waiting to get out wet fly fishing with the 10ft 5wt since the beginning of the season. I began casting at the head of the Georges wall run and worked my way down. There were some fish sipping along the eddies and bank so edged my fly closer and closer until the line went tight and I had trout number one. I switched the flies about a bit as I had tied up quite a few over the winter. A hatch of olives came on enticing some trout to the surface which was a very welcome sight.

Anthony will be on the river soon with the wet flies, he is practicing most evenings. I go to grab my fly rod and see its gone, I then see a loop of fly line pass the window indicating I wasn’t quick enough for practice today.

I sat down on the river’s edge for a short while having a cup of tea to take in my surroundings, it certainly helps to put things in perspective. The river and wildlife have helped to solve many issues, and obstacles overcome. It comes back to my time with Glenda on the Blackwater, I looked beyond the casting to help me become a better instructor and to look at things from a different angle which exactly what I had done here. I stopped and looked beyond the fishing to see things from a different angle.

The Spring Angling Fair is quite close now and like I mentioned the lineup is superb. If you’re looking for some information, tips or tricks the quantity of knowledge that will be at the show is vast. I will be there with APGAI, Cadence and giving a demo on fly fishing for carp. I am looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Monster trout from Owel: Piscari-Fly Newsletter 23 April

Peter is back with a weekly round up from Piscari-Fly…

How’s The Fishing?

The sun is finally here, summer is so welcome. Time to blow the cobwebs off those rods and get out on the water as often as possible. Glad to be back on the water ourselves, Peter got out on the Kings for a few hours on Monday. The water levels are starting to drop down nicely even though its not quite there yet it is definitely close to great fishing levels. The fish were a little off probably due to all the recent floods, you had to work for them, not quiet pushed up into the runs yet, but there is some good fishing to be had there.

Reports from around the country is that there is fishing to be had, so try get out on the water and enjoy it while you can. We don’t know how long it will last.

Congratulations to Brian Conway for winning the ITFFA Leinster Lake Qualifiers on Lough Owel last Saturday. Brian caught a 10pound 3 oz trout on one of the piscari-fly buzzers we tied for him earlier on in the season. Delighted to see Brian do well. Great fish to be caught on a very difficult day. Congratulations to all the prize winners on the day and those who qualified for the Leinster team.

Great to get to spend the day with the Leinster youths on Saturday for the Leinster River qualifiers. A big thanks to the Deen and Dinan for hosting. Greta to see the young lads out there enjoying themselves, showing off there skills and catching some nice fish. the winner on the day was Evan McMickan, second was Killian Brady and James Hope was 3rd. It’s always great to work with the youths and give something back and see the next generation coming up. It’s always hard to get youths outdoors and involved in something like fishing so its important for all anglers to give back and to encourage and support those young fisherpeople.

Some great feedback from our Venator rod owners. Peter Wadding was out on the Avonmore this week had some lovely fishing on it. Very impressed with the rod. Peter Driver himself got out too and gave it its first real good use He was out with Dave O’Donovan there on Monday. They are starting to get out on the water now and getting some good action. Ricky Croke got out on the Nore too with some lovely fish caught. Make sure if you are at the Irish Spring Angling Fair that you have get a feel of it.

Mark was fishing in his home waters in Wicklow. Delighted to be out. This time he fished the Aughrim and found the hares ear nymph with chartreuse hot spots worked best and also some rainbow microglint perdigones.

Don’t forget to get in touch if you need anything for the season [email protected].
