Moy Catchment angling report for the period 01/04/24 – 08/04/24
Angling on the Moy suddenly picked up on Monday 8th April with 2 salmon being caught on that day. Ian Canavan was in contact from Knockmore Salmon Anglers Association waters to say that Martin Devers had caught their 1st salmon of the season, 7.5lbs. from the Wood Pool on the worm and East Mayo Anglers Association also recorded their 1st salmon of the season, caught by JP Guiblain, Bohola, who released a 9lbs. salmon while using a spinner. With this news more anglers should be enticed to get out and start their 2024 season.

Despite storm Kathleen Killybegs Mariners had a great few days fishing the beaches around Belmullet in northwest Mayo including a cracking specimen sea trout. Read their report below…
Mariners club trip 2024 to Belmullet and a great few days away with the crew with some amazing fish got even with the named storm conditions as there are so many beaches facing so many different directions that it’s always possible to fish somewhere in this area no matter which way it’s blowing.
Fish of the weekend was a super sea trout for John Cunningham breaking a new club record length and also an Irish specimen length size fish at 68cm on the Inland Fisheries measuring mat (64cm is specimen length) which is great as specimen lengths allow for release of the fish. This fish tossed the tripod and took the rod sliding towards the water before John caught up to it. Another great fish was a bass for Proinnsias Doherty on one of the beaches we were saying they must be on but hadn’t got one there yet. Also, fine trout of 56cm for Declan McGettigan and a 53cm one for Cormac Duddy. Some good flounders were also got which was the target species in the surf.
So, a few great days and nights with the gang and thanks to all the lads that organised the weekend and the hospitality in the Western Strands and McDonnells, corner house and O’Ds once again. Planning the next trip already…
March was a difficult month weather-wise on Corrib, with unseasonably cold winds from the east on many days, and plenty of rain on others. That said, when conditions were suitable, duckfly hatches were reasonably good. The hatch started early, around the 10th, with the best fishing in the week after St. Patrick’s Day. Given the conditions, buzzer fishing took most fish caught on the fly, with short periods of surface action on the better days when dry fly and emergers did well. Best fish we heard of was 6.5lbs, and anglers noted a lack of fish over 4lbs this year, although there were plenty of 2-3lbs fish.
Trolling also produced some fine fish. Young angler Sean Ward had a PB ferox of 78cm, guided by Tomi Kurman. Over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend guests on Tomi’s boat had ferox to over 80cm, all on the troll. Guide Jasper Mathews also found some fine ferox for his clients, with German angler Arnulf greatly enjoying his trip, landing some fine fish despite cold and windy conditions.
Olives are starting to appear now, as well as some early sedges. It will not be long now before the first mayfly appear, and the peak angling effort of the season.

The 3rd round of the Munster Teams League fished was at Inniscarra on 07 April. Munster Council Coarse Angling tells us that the famous fishery did not disappoint on Sunday despite the strong southerly winds following the tail end of Storm Kathleen. Adrian Browne did very well on C section landing 38.850kg. Close on his heels was John Browne…
“I was back on Fountain House on C21. Started off on the 4m whip had 120 fish in the first hour. Then came in on the 3.5m whip and caught another 130 fish in the next hour. A few people started getting big hybrids so I went out on the pole for the next hour and a bit, catching 5 big hybrids then slowing down. I came back in on the 3.5m whip for the last hour and a bit ended up with 360 fish that went 22kg and only 4th in section. What a venue!! My section was won by Adrian Browne who weighed 38kg of big hybrids.”

After the recent rains, the Limerick County Pike Anglers had decided to fish a canal section for their 6th competition of the year, presuming that all the rivers would be running high and dirty. But on arriving at the canal section, they found the nearby river to be in surprisingly good order. So, not to look a gift horse in the mouth, it was decided to switch up plans and fish the river instead.
They didn’t regret their decision, as they were rewarded with a very decent tally of 16 pike for 60lb, which proved to be the most successful outing of the year to date. Best anger on the day was Sam, who totalled 26lb, and not too far behind was Tommy with 21lb. Doing the sums, it seems the two lads didn’t leave too many fish for the rest of the competitors…

All eyes were on the weather last week, as reports of very high winds with gusts up to force 10 meant that the latest round of the South Shore SAC competition schedule was in the balance right up to Saturday morning. But, spotting a gap in the weather, they made the brave call to go ahead with the match and hope that the forecasted drop-off in winds materialised.
And their bravery was rewarded, as anglers arriving for the 7pm start, found settled seas and relatively windless skies. The preceding blow seemed to have got the fish well stirred up, and anglers were happy to find plenty of fish on the go from the outset.
Whiting, dabs and ray were all showing well, but much like their previous match, it was dogfish that were the mainstay on the night. Brothers Gavin & Ciaran Fogerty were drawn together in Zone A, and with themselves and Eamon Bermingham all hitting dogs a-plenty, it was nip & tuck between them. It was a similar story on Zone B as a handful of anglers dogged it out for the top spot.
But, as the evening progressed, it was the wind that started to call the shots, as the lull in the storm drew to a close, and with winds beginning to ramp up, it was decided to end the competition early after just over 3 hours fishing. In Zone A, it was a close call that was ultimately decided in Gavin’s favour for having the better size of fish, also winning him the overall prize on the night. Similarly, Ian Daly saw his better size of fish land him the top spot in Zone B. See full report on South Shore SAC Facebook page.
