Friend of the show, Keith McDonnell, from Impact Fly Fishing, joins us with some expert late season advice and discusses his preference for when he fishes dries v streamers.

Plus Keith also tells us about a recent trip to Iceland that saw him land three double-figure sea trout.

Limerick County Pike Anglers all at sea

Members of the Limerick and County Pike Anglers Club took a break from the pike fishing recently to target something different – saltwater species – and different saltwater species is just what they got.

They had a great day where everyone managed to get in on the act, with spur dogs, cod, ling, pollock, mackerel, wrasse and even the rare megrim coming on board.

Weather started off cloudy but turned into a lovely sunny day with clear skies. There were lots of spurs about and good fish that they were reeling in were being attacked on the way up.

The dreaded end of season looms around the corner. Walking across the field towards the king’s river in sleet in March seems many many moons ago when it was only back in March. In March I tend to find myself awaiting the warmer months and in September I’m wishing to be back in March again, never happy. This season, like most, I got to meet plenty of clients that are now angling acquaintances. Learning their methods of trout fishing and trying them on the river while they try my methods. Swapping of angling knowledge is something that I truly enjoy. I have been handed everything from a bright orange grasshopper to a size 24 work of art, both caught trout.

Over the last couple of weeks we have had plenty of trout with quite a few nice sized fish. I like to keep things simple when fishing, I keep a log of what is working in relation to patterns and try to base my boxes on that. Sedge patterns are working well at the moment along the river with some great fun just before the heavy darkness sets in. Dark wets and spider patterns are working well from 2.45pm – 3pm until 5.30pm – 6pm in recent days I find. The water temperature is peaking at 15 – 15.5 degrees. The water level is at .33 which is a nice height, and all the runs and glides are fishable at that height. The days can be bright, so I use a longer leader when fishing my chosen discipline.

Some grilse were caught over the past couple of weeks also, a couple of nice salmon between 12-14 pounds were also caught on the Manor house pool which left the anglers with some fond memories to reminisce on over the close season.

My latest trip was with a good friend of mine, we were learning the circle c cast just under the main house listening to a sika stag calling, wood pigeons cooing and the river as it deflected off our waders. The noise of the reel disturbing us from time to time was welcome with the sight of a brown trout leaping from the fast current even more welcome. A lovely trip and very memorable one.

River Nore trout fishing

No bluefin bonanzas, but fishing steady when conditions allow

Adrian Molloy of Tuna.ie reports that the tuna are still keeping him ticking over when weather allows. Over the weekend, there were three nice fish for Martin, Kate and Rory, measuring up at 240cm 207cm and 220cm. The three fish, with estimated weights of 500lbs, 350lbs and 400lbs, were tagged and released under the Tuna CHART tagging programme. The next six weeks should see the fishing really pick up, provided that we can avoid stormy weather.

Killybegs Mariners SAC had some great fishing over the weekend. Read their reports below…

9 September: First league outing took place last night on the most popular beach in Donegal and unseasonal mid summer type heat had thousands enjoying the last dregs of summer as we landed to the location.
A decision was easy to make to delay the starting time and fishing could start as the bathers made for home or to sit on the dunes for the stunning sunset and lightening storm inland behind the hotel.

A great turnout of 29 anglers fished. First cast produced a fine double shot of 34cm and 31cm flounders for Darren and lots of weever fish all along taking the baits.

It’s a beach that could produce any species on its day and a large selection of species were caught including scad, whiting, pollack, trout, small eyed ray, weever and flounder.
Scores were close at the end but a small eyed ray along with flounders and whiting were enough to score 212pts winning €120 for Gavin Dorrian.

2nd place with flounders, weever, pollack and whiting for 201pts and €60 was John Cunningham

Longest flattie prize of €60 was a fine 36cm flounder for Ryan McGinley.

And the lucky peg draw at the end of €58 was won by Sean Harte.

Well done to all out enjoying the fishing. Next outing details will be on the messenger and here again.

10 September: Warm Donegal bay waters are alive with all forms of fish, whales and tuna at the moment and producing some great fishing for our shore anglers.
Float fishing light lines Cormac Burke had 5 garfish, pollack and wrasse while Cormac Duddy also had some fine wrasse to 45cm and a dragonette.

12 September: Killybegs Mariners Catch of the week this week goes to John Cunningham with a shore caught trigger fish. Thanks to Dave Ogilvie for tipping us off that shoals of triggers were on a local mark feeding in close John ventured the next morning and had a great scrap on a light rod float fishing the triggers. Great fishing.

Ceri Jones talks trout with Colin Dodd on Lough Arrow

Ceri Jones visited Lough Arrow for a few days at the end of August. This was his second visit to the lake, his first being 30 years ago when he was a teenager. That time, he only got to fish the lake for half a day. This time, he fished for a few hours on Saturday and all day Sunday with Club Secretary Colin Dodd.

It was fairly windy on Sunday with a good wave on the lake, but he had a good gillie in Colin, who is well used to these conditions. They landed a couple of trout each and rose many more. Lunchtime was spent in The Diamond with a fry and a chat with a few of the local anglers.

Ceri recorded a podcast with Colin and hopes to fish Lough Arrow again, the next time during the mayfly. A big shout out to Colin for organising the visit.

10 September: Productive morning on the jerkbaits! I hit the lake for a few hours before the thundery weather closed in, loads of activity. The best fish of the day came off just beside the boat but will find her next time!

Also absolutely wild to see a 30cm trout smash my 20cm line thru trout! Talk about predatory!

07 September: Out testing some new lures before Predator Battle Ireland in two weeks! Fingers crossed we can find some similar brownies when we actually need them!

Frank Maunsell from Owenmore River on the Dingle Peninsula is expecting a some good fishing before the end of the season and with rain forecast he shouldn’t have to wait too long…

11th Sept 2023: The hot spell is finally over and hopefully we will get a decent flood before the Season ends.

There are still a good share of fish in the estuary both salmon and seatrout and some of them will surely move in the next flood.

Dave Norman of Angling Adventures West Cork took a trip to Lough Erne to fry his hand a fly fishing for pike at the weekend…

Something different – Had a great day of Pike Fly on Lough Erne with Pike On The Fly Guide – Stuart Wylie who I enjoyed meeting at the Irish Spring Angling Fair earlier this year.

Full Sun and Baking heat in the high twenties wasn’t what we were hoping for but with Stuart’s expert guiding we connected with and boated this beauty which turned the scales to 22lbs 6 oz!

Good fishing in bad conditions for Edenderry anglers

When the Edenderry Coarse Angling Club organised their final club match of the season for a date in September, they didn’t think they would be fishing in 26°C of blistering sunshine, but that’s what we had to deal with on the day. With the Indian Summer, the venue on the Grand Canal had dropped a foot over the week and was running crystal clear – not god conditions for daytime fishing!

Despite the hot, bright weather, the low water and the clear water, the venue actually fishing well enough on the day, with bream and tench both helping to make up good weights for competing anglers. Top man on the day was Dean Murray with a lovely net one off the end.
