Lucky Anglers unlucky with weather at Tulla but great time had

The Lucky Anglers Fishing Club recently embarked on a different location for their ‘Expert Cup’ Competition held for the first time at Silvergrove, Lough Bridget with the kind assistance of the Tulla & District club and landowners.

The catches were slow and the weather wet & windy but it didn’t dampen the spirits with the camaraderie of the club members at a high. The catches were small but everyone caught, predominantly roach, rudd and skimmers. The day ended with a welcome BBQ on the bank.

Dirty days don’t deter determined Dubs fishing with Bluesharkangling

John Fleming of Bluesharkangling had a crew of Dubliners out with him during the week and they faced some pretty lousy weather and heavy seas that had them seek shelter around Inis Mor. Not daunted by the rough conditions, they decided to take the opportunity to target some wrasse, and that decision paid off as they got a few decent ballans and a couple of cuckoos that fell just short of specimen size.

Their second day out was still quite blowy but otherwise a better day to be on the water, and they were able to anchor up and fish for tope and huss. The plan worked out as all managed to score with the tope, and a few huss came to the boat too.

Anglers still getting good sport on Loughs Conn and Cullin

Good sport is still to be had on the lakes. Several parties had enjoyable sessions and even half days or shorter outings saw anglers catch a decent number of trout last week.

Kelly’s Boat Hire reports of Walter and Susan Byrne having had several good days catching 5-6 fish each.

An American party spent two hours trolling on Lough Conn, catching 3 or 4 trout and a grilse, which they released.

Dominic McGowan fished on Sunday with a friend of his from Armagh between 12 and 6 o’clock, catching and releasing 9 trout between the two of them.

Peter Roche fished Massbrook, Cormorant Rocks and Brackwansha on Wednesday afternoon, but never connected and only rose one fish.

Poor week on Moy as weather continues to impact angling success

Tough conditions on the Moy

Steve Schreck , IFI Ballina, tells us that unfortunately, for the for week ending 20th August 2023 the picture remains pretty much the same. Weather conditions weren’t great and therefore salmon fishing on the Moy didn’t improve last week. The constant floods seem to not only impact angling activity, but also the salmon’s eagerness to take.

Water levels at Ballylahan were 0.9m on Monday, then dropped to 0.5m over the week, to eventually rise above 1.5m on Sunday.

Ballina Salmon Anglers reported 38 salmon between 3lbs and 6lbs, mostly caught spinning or on bubble and fly.

A juvenile competition was held on Saturday 19th August and 17 juveniles took part. The competition was supported by Inland Fisheries Ireland who provided some sponsorship and Moy Search and Rescue supervised the event.

Mount Falcon recorded 7 fish caught spinning and worming. The best fish weighed 5lbs.

Knockmore Salmon Anglers reported 4 salmon between 3lbs and 6lbs, caught on the spinner and the worm.

Attymass Angling Club recorded 1 fish caught.

Byrne’s Fishery recorded 2 salmon for the week,

Gannon’s Fishery reported 3 salmon caught. Two fish weighed 4lbs, caught on the worm and a larger fish in the region of 5.5 lbs caught on a spinner.

The Foxford Fishery recorded 1 salmon for the week.

Foxford Salmon Anglers reported 17 salmon last week, of which 3 were caught at Rinnaney and 14 at Baker’s. The best fish weighed 8lbs and 7lbs.

East Mayo Anglers reported 8 salmon for the week, 4 of which were released. The most successful methods were fly-fishing followed by spinning. The best fish weighed 7.5lbs.

A very successful Youth Angling Event was held by East Mayo Anglers on Wednesday evening 16th August at the Disabled Anglers Facility near Straide. Fifty-nine youths registered on the evening. Weather was good and the children had a fantastic time. They were enthusiastic to learn the art of fishing which was expertly demonstrated by volunteers onsite. The event was supported by Inland Fisheries Ireland staff who were in attendance at the event.

Marco Hoffman wins Coachford Festival with 64.060kg

Anglers enjoyed some super fishing in this years Coachford Festival fished on Inniscarra Reservoir in Co. Cork. Individuals regularly weighed in nets over 20kg over the 3 day festival with the 30kg mark also being broken. the average catch per angler on day one was nearly 12kg, this rose to nearly 14 on day 2 and nearly reached 15kg on day 3!

The heaviest individual weight of 37.33kg didn’t come until the final day and transformed the fortunes of Marco Hoffman, who had started the day in 16th place. His huge haul made for a total catch of 64.060kg, putting him nearly 3kg clear of second placed Pawel Swinton.

Anglers fishing the Munster Blackwater but catches scarce

Salmon angling was poor on the Munster Blackwater up until Fri 18th of Aug, but weather associated with storm Betty effectively finished it for the week after this with high and coloured river conditions. Having said this, anglers are out fishing, but we have little or no reports of catches.

Not much action on the Laune or Killarney lakes last week

One of Tomasz's favourite rivers is the Laune

Last week only 2 salmon were reported from the Killarney Lakes, weighing 6.5lbs and 8lbs.

On the Laune, there 1 salmon from Johnsons on the Laune weighing 8lbs taken by a local angler on the fly. In addition there was 1 salmon on Beat 2 of the Laune weighing 7lbs by a Cork angler on a worm.

Salmon to 11.5lb reported from the Bandon

Fishing was going well on the Bandon last week until Storm Daisy raised levels to high flood at the weekend. There had been a good run of fresh fish til the heavy rains hit the catchment. The best of these was an 11.5lb fish caught on shrimp by a club member at Daisy Lohans.

The river is returning to good order again and there should be a few more fresh fish in it now.
