16/8/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet in all departments as they get ready on the Yellow rain warning with thunder and flash floods forecasted for Friday, the amount of estimated rainfall for Waterville is 22.1 mm. Wind light SW followed by bright sunshine.
Ballinaskelligs Bay
17/8/2023 The Currane anglers report in all was quiet on the SW front this day. Now we head down Murphy’s road and for good reason, as you all know the flood is on the cards, so as you can imagine there will be a full cast of C&R Inny anglers hoping to catch the one that got away. Just for the record Photographer Eagle Eye took a cracker of a photo of the sunrise this morning as you can see. Wind SSE light to fresh followed by good cloud cover.
18/8/2023 Storm Betty, I wet me trousers will miss Kerry later tonight it won’t be too bad except for the yellow rain warning. Now today’s Currane action, all I can say is, it was rough out there with a moderate to strong SE wind at times and overcast followed heavy rain at times and in the words of one Gillie, it’s made a big flood. On the Inny front it was on the rise late this morning and as of yet I have no reports, but you can be sure there was a good C&R cast of Inny anglers up their when the conditions were in their favour.
19/8/2023 Betty’s yellow rain warning certainly wet me trousers in style with 73 mm of rainfall, in total there was 82.3 mm of rainfall within 24 hours. Now straight to the Inny Farmer and his report on today’s action, At least 4 fish caught on the C&R Inny, 2 on the fly and 2 spin. Now I find it astonishing that I’m getting reports of Worming on the Commeragh and the Inny today, I have to say I have No proof of this but it was reported to me by email.
20/8/2023 Currane anglers were all quiet going by my WhatsApp. Now we head for the C&R Inny anglers, the Inny farmer reported that it was quiet and finished his report by saying in my opinion Vince you can take that with a pinch of salt, experience tells you that? Wind fresh SSW and followed by good cloud cover and warm.
21/8/2023 I start today’s report on the sad news that retired ambulance Driver Mr. Timothy O’Shea RIP of Spunkane, Waterville passed away today. The reason I mention this is because Timothy comes from a great Salmon fishing family in Waterville and fished himself, as we all know Timothy was a renowned ambulance driver for Kerry, even when Timothy took the road to retirement he was always there to help as I found out personally myself, when I was coming back home from fishing I came off my bike, he followed the ambulance to St. Ann’s Hospital in Cahersiveen and waited till I got the all clear and then He drove me home. So, on behalf of all the Currane anglers and the good people of Waterville and Kerry we send our Sincere Sympathies to all of Timothy’s family. Well Timothy you may be gone but you certainly won’t be forgotten.
22/8/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet today.
23/8/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet on the Western front in all department’s. Wind NW light followed by the odd light shower.
Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.
The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-
the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. For more details see:
Some of the Killybegs Mariners crew have been very active over the last week or two, with lots of species being caught from boat and shore.
Christopher and Brian spent a few hours afloat on the St. Catherine, fishing a few different grounds and bring 15 species to the boat – great angling!

Declan McGettigan from Killybegs Fishing Trips also caught a new lclub record John Dory over the weekend, while Dessie O’Keeney had nephews Alex and Paul out for their first taste of beach fishing, with treble hauls of flounder and turbot providing great sport.

August 14: Due to the heavy rainfall, the water level is back up to where it was in Spring. The level is so high that boats cannot make it through the cut, which is not usual at this time of year. Reports from anglers would indicate that the green peter fishing has not been great, although there were decent hatches of flies. However, it hasn’t all been bad. Paul and Niall Cullen, Kildare landed eight fish for five nights. Robert Cullen, Drumshanbo and Gerry Martin, Ballindoon picked up the odd fish here and there.
Tisse with a magnificent six-pounder from Arrow
Best catch for the last few weeks was by Tisse Siriwardena, Sligo, with a beautiful trout of six pound – a great Catch of the Week winner. Together with his boat partner, Colin McNiffe, they landed five fish for the day to wet flies.
Fishing appears to be picking up over the last few days, with more boats on the lake and a number of trout being caught, mainly on wet flies.
Next competition…
The next competition will take place on Sunday next, 20th August. Usual competition rules apply – see previous posts. Weigh-in as usual in The Mayfly.
To mark the first anniversary of the death of Thomas Walsh, a great angler and friend, the Walsh family will present a shield for the junior competition at our weigh-in on Sunday evening.
Thomas had an in-depth knowledge and love of Lough Arrow, and had a particular interest in the mayfly and green peter fishing. And when his boat was seen pulled up on an island at lunchtime, we all knew he was working his magic on the pan!
The family is also holding a memorial fundraiser in aid of the Oncology Unit, Sligo Hospital in McDermotts Castlebaldwin later on Sunday evening.
Pete Davis of West Cork and District SAC put together this great report of their recent club matches at Bantry Airstrip and Ferrypoint:
The club’s two latest competition’s were held at Bantry Airstrip and Ferrypoint.
Bantry Airstrip
The Airstrip is always capable of throwing up a few decent fish and luckily it did for us on the day.
The competition winner was Troy Francis helped along with a nice double shot of ray, The winning card had a mixture of Thornback ray’s and Dogfish Barry O Rourke had similar in second place and Jp Molloy was third on the day.
Troy Francis – 10 fish =537pts
Barry O Rourke – 8 fish =417pts
Jp Molloy – 6 fish =338pts
Pool’s
Jp Molloy- Thornback ray 83cm
Troy Francis – Thornback ray 77cm
Ferrypoint
Ferrypoint was used as a backup venue for our original fixture on Ballyquin, unfortunately due to high winds the beach was unsafe to fish.
It was a very tight fought competition, JP lead the way going into the last hour but Troy finished very strong with a nice triple shot of dogs, a 53cm bass and another dog to get the win. Well done Troy a very good run of form lately keeps him on top of our Master Angler table.
Troy Francis – 10 fish =508pts
Stephen O Donovan – 9 fish = 427pts
Jp Molloy – 9 fish = 396pts
Pool’s
Troy Francis – Bass 53cm

Skipper Luke Aston says it has been another week of mixed weather, wind restricting fishing to the confines of the Shannon Estuary at times, but they did get out west on other days.
A shark drift on Friday produced a nice porbeagle to the boat. There were plenty of fine whiting caught from the bottom, with a few bonus garfish landed too.

Regular guests Detlef and Werner arrived, and their first day spent in the estuary produced some nice fishing at stages in the tide. A few tiny tope pups were also caught, hopefully a good sign for the future.
A fine bull hussHussPup tope. Awww!
Another day in the estuary produced thornback ray, but fishing was generally quiet, however a trip out west followed. Despite a windy start and a slow steam, they were rewarded with a lovely drift and great sport on spinning gear with shads.

Cormac Walsh of Bassfishingireland took a break from his podcasting last week to spend a few days fishing on the south coast. The spring tides coincided nicely with prime early morning and evening feeding times and this meant the bass were on the hunt and taking well. Most of the bass fell to top water lures and were caught around the top of the tide.

Fish were also active in the east Cork area as huge shoals of sprat were congregating close to the shore, where they became the target of hunting mackerel, scad and bass. At times, the water was exploding with feeding fish, and a lure or fly cast into the midst was sure to provoke a take.
Gavin Tivy, Skipper of the charter boat Sea Hunter out of Youghal, reports on his first bluefin tuna of 2023…

David Norman of Angling Adventures West Cork and guests had some great fishing in West Cork last week…
Had a great time guiding and coaching @storei1988 last week who is close to buying his own kayak but wisely wanted to come out with me to learn a bit more before committing to a purchase. Conditions were close to the limit at times but careful use of the terrain and good teamwork meant we were more than able to get the job done.
Despite the conditions we located and targeted some nice Pollock on Pirate Lures Teasers, Wrasser & Corsair Baitfish patterns and the finale was to introduce Stephen to surface lure fishing which he mastered in record time and got his first ever topwater fish a feisty Pollock which somehow avoided my GoPro, followed by a brief appearance by some Garfish.
Stephen then reported back the following day to say he’d also had a topwater encounter with a Bass when back on his own patch thanks to the skills acquired during the guided trip so very worthwhile all round …

If you’re interested in doing some 1-2-1 guided fishing with me – david.aawc@gmail.com
David has been lure then fly fishing since the mid noughties with some of the best guides and anglers in Ireland and abroad.
Kayak fishing by lure & fly now takes him and his guiding guests beyond the shore to target Pollock, Bass or Wrasse with the chance of other species such as Codling, Coalfish, Mackerel or Garfish.
Shore fishing at night is also a very special experience.
